lassieR3_opera_302.sfs uploaded

#1 Post by tronkel »

For Opera fans, an Opera version of the Lassie sfs module has been uploaded. Apart from the opera browser, it is identical to lassieR3_302.sfs, which had Firefox as the browser.

Get it here:

Oh goodness! Here we go again. Lassie Firefox - Lassie Opera

Is it technically feasible to just have a base Puppy ISO (Chihuauhua) and then separate sfs modules for Opera - Firefox - SeaMonkey along with others (see below).

The user then just takes the base and adds their favourite topping - (apologies to Pizzapup here!).

If the basics get sorted, i.e. Chihuahua and the various application SFS files, everybody can be happy. If we spend time discussing what browser goes into Lassie (and media player and ...) there will always be somebody who is not happy.

I repeat this extract from my post of Wed Feb 06, 2008 9:40 am on the SFS combiner thread:
http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=26097

QUOTE

Now we don't need all these versions of Puppy around - some with Opera, some with SeaMonkey, some with Firefox, ...

Just a base version of Puppy and lots of SFS files:

Pick one or more from each group:

Browser: SeaMonkey; Opera; Firefox
Office: OpenOffice ; AbiWord+Gnumeric
Media Player: Gxine; MPlayer; VNC
Developer Environment: TCL; Puppy BASIC; ...
Game Pack: ??; ??
...

Use SFS Combiner and, voila, your own preference of Puppy!

END QUOTE

Is this technically feasible? If so, why don't we do it?

When the base and SFS files are in place we can create specific Puppies if we want. To take the Pizza analogy further maybe the Margheurita is like Puppy of old with Seamonkey, GXine, Abiword+Gnumeric. Then the Meaty Feast is Opera plus Open Office plus Mplayer plus TCL ...

Now that MU's SFS Combiner exists it is possible to combine any number of SFS into the limit of 3 that Puppy demands.

I just don't know if it is technically feasible to create apps in separate sfs files or whether they are intrinsically linked with the base in some way.

What say you?

When you follow the modularised approach like this the key module is Chihuahua. What is the development plan for that? I was surprised to see Lassie appear before Chihuahua.

I decided to begin development of the Lassie modules now, simply to get the ball rolling on this and to really test out the principle. So far so good I'd say. Seems to work fine.

This idea of modularising the next Puppy CE version was also perceived as a good way to do the development. There's no reason to develop the modules serially. They can be simultaneously worked on by independent groups with this approach. This is only the beginning of the Lassie development life-cycle. There are lots of possibilities here. It's only just started. Each time I look at it, I can see new possibilities for tweaks and improvements. It's not a five-minute job at all.

Yes, the Chihuahua module is the most important module of all. This needs to be worked on by various specialists in order to take it from Alpha to Final.
I'm going to make a start very soon on Chiuahua in any case - e.g. live hot-plugging and a better browser are must-haves here.

e.g. multissesion, frugal install and driver modules need improving here. If anyone can lend a hand with this, they are very welcome.

I'd like to see Phoenix sorted out as well. We can't take on too many projects all at once though. The users need time to understand and get used the various project versions.

Once Phoenix and Lassie are ready, we can all then concentrate on Puppy Dingo 4. This is more important than any of these previous versions IMHO.

Suggestions welcome for what you'd like to see in Lassie. Specialised "Boxer" modules could be produced which cater to e.g. gamers, multimedia fans, programmers office users - or indeed any specialised area you can think of. This is a real community exercise where many users could have useful input.
