2.17 install locked up, now won't boot

#1 Post by earlytv »

This old system sometimes locks up. A reset and reboot and its ok.
After a lock up while puppy 2.17 running now wont boot from hard drive.
Duning boot says, error some bit set on some sector and then at exec personal script a # appears and system stops. If I boot from cd it ends up going to hard drive so when running, hard drive locked, cant unmount
to maybe reformat and reinstall?????

You can unmount the hard drive if you use

Code: Select all

puppy pfix=ram
when you boot from cd.

I've been messing around with puppy (3.01 NOP) on my computer lately and it seems to me that is you dont have anything valuable you might just want to reinstall.

If you have stuff that you want to keep, I would make another partion on my hardrive (or plug in an external/flash) and transfer the "custom" (things you changed) parts of the file system to the other disk/partion. Then reinstall and put the folders that you took out where they go.

FYI, I'm still new to this, but that is how I would do it. Maybe someone else could direct to the source of the problem. Hope this helps.

From your description of what happened, I'd say your hd is fixing to fail. Definitely back up anything you don't want to lose, but onto some other media, or an external hd, not another partition on the same hd, before you proceed with reinstalling Puppy.

System was old server in rack mount. I got it with win xp pro and it locked up 3 or 4 times in 1st 15 min then was fine, maybe? I got another exact same hard drive. I put old one in usb case where it wouldnt lock up system and used live puppy to move all old to newer same type HD.
Allmost worked, but XP PRO booted with 2 problems. So now I had xp pro on 2 drives a COA number but no orig DVD of XP PRO? I put puppy on this 2nd drive and it would at random lock up. Tried 3rd HD and it also at random locks up. Maybe MB has problem not HD? Or 3 bad HDs??
This BIOS has 2 sections. To get to 2nd timing secton a jumper has to be moved somewhere on the MB?? The HD seems to be using some DMA mode so maybe timing just off??

ANY HD or system test on a linux live CD?

Thanks for puppy pfix=ram .
That let me re install and its been running for hours, till next lockup???

In 3.01, rxvt says
# dmidecode --type 0
bash: dmidecode: command not found
