Puppy 4.1.2 for old Ati Radeon cards (update 12.12.2008)

#1 Post by MU »

There are free Xorg drivers to accellerate graficscards, also for the old ATI models
Radeon 8500 to 9250.
But they might not support all features.
For example Doom3 relies on the propriatary fglrx drivers from ATI.
Unfortunately, the newer fglrx drivers no longer support the old cards.

So I patched Puppy 4.1.2 with the old fglrx driver 8.28.8.
This Puppy is ONLY for those cards, not for other ones.
I attach a list of all supported cards in the end of this message.

It is Puppy-retro with Kernel 2.6.21.7, as the newer one could not compile the fglrx kernelmodule.
I also replaced most files from Xorg 7.3 with selfcompiled ones from Xorg 7.1.
That was the last version supported by that driver.
I added the SDL libraries required by most games, and one 3D game, Dreamchess 2000.
And the filesystem utilities Muppy-Filer and Muppy-Quickmount.
Muppy-Filer makes it easy to extract games and copy files.

This Puppy has a working xorg.conf, so X should start immedeatly with accelleration enabled. It automatically should detect the best screen resolution.
To check accelleration, open a consolewindow, and type:
antinspect -fps
This should run a small demo, you should get at least 30 frames per second.
If not, type:
glxinfo
This should tell you, that DRI is active.
If it is not, please attach here your zipped /var/log/Xorg.0.log.

Apart from these changes, it looks like the original Puppy, I added no optical changes.

http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=28930

Note:
do NOT run xorgwizard, as it would destroy the xorg.conf.
If that should happen by accident, restore /etc/X11/xorg.conf from the backup /etc/X11/xorg.conf-fglrx.

Issues:
The keyboard settings must be modified by hand.
To get a german keyboard, replace "us" with "de" in this section in /etc/X11/xorg.conf:

Code: Select all

Section "InputDevice"
	Identifier "Keyboard0"
	Driver "kbd"
	Option "XkbRules" "xorg"
	Option "XkbModel" "pc102"
	Option "XkbLayout" "us" #xkeymap0
EndSection
Please let me know, if it works "out of the box",or if I must add more tweaks.

Thanks greatly for doing this, MU.

As a report:

Thinkpad T30 with ATI 7500,

MD5 checksum of image ISO verified against downloaded file, and the burned CD (as computed by Isobuster)

Running CD with pfix=ram

I was presented with the usual mouse/keyboard/and xorg/xvesa start up screens.

I chose xorg (not knowing whether this would start the xorgwizard -- I noticed from your post we weren't supposed to run it -- if I shouldn't have picked xorg, should I have choosen xvesa?)

I answered the xorg resolution and bit depth questions.

Then it tried to start xwin, but dropped back to the command line. I tried xwin again twice with each of the two window manager choices, but it always returned to the command line.

If I've done something wrong, please let me know and I'll repeat the test.

One question..... I have frugally installed on this laptop Puppy 4.1.1 with the later kernel. If I boot your disk without pfix=ram, will it wipe out my current installation and try to replace it with 4.12 and the older kernel?

If so, this will cause problems for me, as the wireless card didn't work on 4.1.1 retro, and my VMware Player expects the later kernel as well.

If the ATI card works better with your 4.1.2, then I would consider trying to solve the other two problems -- but I don't want to start that process yet -- so I hope pfix=ram is okay.

Thanks again for your work in this area.

Is this for ATI Mobility (laptop cards) or the desktop cards?
Are there any benefits except gaming performance?

Hm, xorgwizard should not start.
So I must patch it, to avoid that.

You can workaround like this:
When xorgwizard finished, and X fails to start, then type these commands:

cp -ax /etc/X11/xorg.conf-fglrx /etc/X11/xorg.conf
xwin

This will restore the conf for fglrx and run the desktop.
Does this work?
Alternatively you can generate a new xorg.conf like this:
aticonfig --initial
Or:
aticonfig --initial -f

--------------------------------------
If you start it with the boot-option
puppy pfix=ram
then it will not use an existing savefile.
You then can create a new one at shutdown, with a new name.
Puppy then offers a menu at startup to choose from.

----------------------------------------
Supported cards:
here is a list of all supported cards:
https://a248.e.akamai.net/f/674/9206/0/ ... .28.8.html
So mobility cards with old chips should work.
Though the 7000 is not listed, it is supported, as far as I know.
I can try a 7000 on my own today.

I still have lockups with my Radeon 9250.
First I thought, it overheated, and added a cooler.
Still no joy.
They happen in ALL Puppys based on Kernel 2.6.
Then I revived my old Puppy 1 installation.
With this old Kernel 2.4, the fglrx is fine.
I attach a screenshot.
Just dri with the free driver produces mess, but I think that is due to changes in my savefile I made some years ago.

Would it make sense to create a optimized Puppy 1 for these Radeon cards?

**edit** now also Puppy 1 locked up. Seems, that there is something wrong with my card, broken memory or so.

I updated the iso.
Modified /usr/X11R7/bin/xwin
It now should no longer delete xorg.conf.

I also added a section in xorg.conf for keyboard and mouse, so you can easily modify it with an editor, e.g. if you want a german keyboardlayout.

Unfortunately the Radeon 7000 is NOT supported, I tried it on my own now.
I updated my first message with a list of supported cards.

----------------------------------------
If you have a Radeon 7000:
When I run Puppy 4.1.2 (Barrys original version), my Radeon 7000 is detected correctly, and runs with 1680x1050 pixel (what I chose in the wizard).
But if I use FIRST a Radeon 9250 card, and then replace it with the 7000, xorg.conf is not built correctly.
It then misses the "device" section.
It seems that /usr/X11R7/bin/xwin is working erratic, and corrupts xorg.conf.

I attach a pet, that should fix it.
It removes the automatic detection of new graficscards.
So to install a new one, you must explicitly run "xorgwizard" by typing it after exiting X.
It also includes a xorg.conf for Radeon 7000 cards (set to 1024x768 pixel resolution).

Best will be to run xvesa, then install the pet.
Then restart X.

Okay, MU, my card isn't covered in the new 4.1.2 (Mobility Radeon 7500) so I won't test any further.

But thanks for this:
If you start it with the boot-option
puppy pfix=ram
then it will not use an existing savefile.
You then can create a new one at shutdown, with a new name.
Puppy then offers a menu at startup to choose from.
I didn't realize that -- always carefully booted new disks w/ pfix=ram and never saved an additional personal savefile because I thought it would overwrite the old one.

It used to worry me a lot. Now I understand how it works. I did wonder how you set up multiple puplets on the same hard drive -- I figured it must be a manual copy process to special directories.

Thanks for clarifying.

Hi Mark, I have a Radeon 9250 graphics so I downloaded your iso to give it a go.
It booted straight away into 1280x1024 resolution, so I guess the drivers worked, but there was this problem that colors were too bright and washed out! And I couldn't set my monitor brightness/contrast to make them right. Is there some screen brightness/gamma calibration tool that you know about I can use for this? Or if I can manually edit some configuration file, which would it be?

driver for ATI Radeon IGP 320M

#9 Post by fzsolt »

Mark, you seem to be an expert on ATI drivers. I have a (little bit old) HP nx9005 notebook. It has ATI Radeon IGP 320M graphics built in. Do you have any idea how can I use accelerated graphics on this? I tried this puppy, newyearspup and also unnamed puplet, but no success. Thank you.

Mark,

Great job, and the one in newyearspup, which obviously is an extension of this, is even better. Now, is there a way to combine this with the nvidia drivers and maybe some others, as you have them in newyearspup, and have the set as a .pet that can be added to other flavors of puppy linux?

You know, you've got a hell of a driver set here (actually, the only one that works AFAIK), and you should consider spreading out the goodness even more.

And if you can't do this, maybe you can give us some hints on how to detach the driver portion of newyearspup, so we can use it in other places (like the new Deep Though, for instance).

Thanks a lot!

for the nvidia drivers:
there are some available for Puppy 4.12:
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=34001

The ones from newyearspup would not work, because it has a different Kernel and Xorg.

Newyearspups Nvidia drivers can be used in Ultrapup, though.
extract the matching archive from /usr/local/graficsdrivers.
Then run the matching comand from newyearspups /usr/sbin/xorgwizard to set up xorg.conf. It is a pretty short script, so the comands are easy to find.

Alternatively, install the kernel sfs and devx, then download the matching installer from nvidia.com and run it.
Ultrapup is configured so well, that the installer runs without problems without further tweaks.

Mark, I downloaded your Puppy and tried it direct from CD with pfix=ram. xwin positively will not start. If I start xorgwizard from the CL and select a resolution and then 'test', it comes up with:

Resolution x pixels
Horizontal frequency 0.00 khz
Refresh frequency 0.00 hz

And the resulting xorg.conf contains only a screen section.

Running a Radeon 9200SE board. It runs fine in Puppy 4/4.2, and runs fine under Xvesa in your puppy.

you might try to run:

rm -f /etc/X11/xorg.conf
aticonfig --initial -f

This should generate a new one, if aticonfig works as in newer versions.
I meanwhile have a new computer, so had to attach my old one again, to test that.
At moment, I'm too busy

You also might have to copy
/etc/X11/xorg.conf
to
/etc/X11/xorg.conf.your_cardname
Once xorgwizard ran, that file is created, "your_card_name" is unique on every system.
It is used by Puppys hardwaredetection, that tends to destroy a xorg.conf, that was not created with Puppys Xorgwizard.

The newer Catalyst pets I made, meanwhile contain a rewritten xorgwizard, but it is not trivial, to add it to this puplet.

is this useful for 4.3.1 ? ??

Came to this page as a search result, looking to get proper video support for my dell laptop (d600) running puppy 4.31 (which may be the main source of the trouble?)..
Xorg wizard only lists two available modes-- the least I've ever seen Puppy offer,( and I've run many versions on many machines..)
these being the 16bit and 24bit versions of 1024x768.
But I should be able to do 1400x1050 accg to
http://www.guilds.net/machines/600m/

so maybe I should be wading through the 431 Bugs thread, or posting this to the dpup thread, which I think I want to migrate to as it's likely (?) going to comprise the next RC (5.0?)... or another of the scads of puplets would be preferable? The focus seems to have dissipated a great deal and I'm close to bolting for more mainstream/bulky distros..
TIA

ATI Radeon 9600XT working!

#18 Post by alroger »

Just tested SecondLife using you customized PuppyLinux 4.12 with FGLRX and it was blazing fast! Even with all water reflections turned on.
Thanks!

I hope it helps a friend with a Mobility Radeon 9200 also.

Puppy Mobility Radeon 9000

#19 Post by thegmandrive »

HI MU,
are you still patching puppy to run on old ATI drivers?

I have Puppy arcade 9, and am running an old Dell latitude with an ATI mobility Radeon 9000. for the life of me, I cannot fine any proprietary drivers that work with puppy.

Do you have a patch? Puppy arcade is based of of Puppy 4.2 and Kernal 2.6

I was thinking of maybe trying your patched 4.1 and than trying to download all the emulators in puppy arcade.
