Seeing Dog Puppy for Blind
Okay. Edbrowse is in as a menu option. 3.3, non-ssl, at the moment but I want to upgrade it to version 3.40.
I thought of using speech-dispatcher and espeak, as the current version can use them, but I would still like to upgrade to 4.1, if possible, and speech dispatcher won't compile in 4.x.
MOCP is still in there but not a a menu option. The menu option will run MPGFRONT, which will handle the playlists, and use mpg123 to play the mp3 files.

Console Zoom is in.
http://freshmeat.net/projects/czoom/
It gives the user the opportunity to magniy the text on a console screen. It works, I assume, by choosing the font in which the text is displayed.
ctrl-t - zomm and center cursor
ctrl-b; ctrl-g; ctrl-n; ctrl-v moves amplified screen
ctrl-x repass to terminal at next keypress
My main complaint is that czoom comes with one font. I would like the option to choose different size fonts, but hey, what does one expect for free?
I could read the screen with out my glasses though.

Trobin,
Here is a font converter that will convert Adobe type 1 fonts to psf (screen fonts): http://home.comcast.net/~fbui/bdf2psf.html
On that page there are two additional fonts:
7x13
8x13
I have downloaded those fonts and attached them to this message.
I have no idea how large they are! I'll have to investigate more to be sure that I'm giving you something that you need.
Best
David

Thanks. It does appear to use adobe fonts. However czoom, which apparentl;y been in alpha since 2001, looks for the font-8x8.psf file. So there may not be an easy way to chance font sizes without renaming files. Thats a possibilty, though I'd hoped there'd be a more elegant solution.
http://speakpup.blogspot.com
I'll leave it in because there might be a possibility that someone will find it usefuyl.
However czoom seems hardwired rto find that one particular file - font8.8.psf. I've dited czoom.cpp to try and get it to load another font file but it still looks for font-8x8.psf. I tried renaming another font filke to try and decieve czomm but that only messes up the display.

Speakpup Release Candidate 2 download site:
http://www.puppylinux.asia/members/Seei ... puprc2.iso
If there a problem with Puppylinux.asia, try the following site.
http://www.yourfilelink.com/get.php?fid=477675&dv=1
You will see a small "Download" button at the bottom of the page It is pretty confusing - but that is confusing on purpose so you'll buy the "fast" service.
speakpuprc2.iso is still a release candidate - so feedback and bugs are requested to be posted here.

Accessible Puppy!
Hi I been away from the Puppy Linux Forum for a while and have lost touch with developments. I am very interested in the Puppy for the Blind idea (I have just released a customised version of Ubuntu for the Blind - Vinux) but I am also interested in making a console based version of puppy using YASR or something similar. It seems this is already well underway. I would be happy to help test, or contribute to the project if I am able to offer anything useful. I would particularly like to know where to get hold of accessibility apps in .pet format etc.

Accessible Puppy!
Forgot to mention, I work at the Royal National College for the Blind in the UK and have daily access to hundreds of eager guinea pigs who will be able to test and provide feedback! drbongo
Hello Dr. Bongo, News on the Coconut Telegraph travels far and wide. it is always nice to have someone join us. I think the "Progress" train has stopped for the holidays, but who knows it may start up again. Choo! Choo! All aboard!
Flip through this thread - and you will see some great ideas, and some good links to other projects. The one that is most finished is Oralux - but that has been abandoned - but the Oralux CD works very well out of the box.
Best to you and the others lurking

the new knoppix 6 is blind friendly - thought you might like to check it out
http://knopper.net/knoppix/knoppix60-en.htmlblind-friendly, talking ADRIANE menu by default (use boot option "knoppix"
for directly starting into graphical desktop)
Took a looksee, there was some progress.
It booted dirtectly to a menu without having to enter a boot option. Most of the programs remain the same, elinks, mutt, etc. They've added some graphical programs, Open Office 3, Firefox (Iceweasel) and a full x windows system. It took some time for thwem to load from the menu, but all returned to it after they were shut down.
Definitely worth a try.

I have an "on mainboard" sound card and an additional (better quality) soundblaster PCI sound card.
I have to run alsaconf to get the new card.
Also I tried to change the settings to use EN instead of DE as the voice.
I got it working but with some work. I'll have to set the "onboard sound card" to OFF in my bios and see if it works out of the box.
I just updated the download links for speakpuprc2 above.
Main location for speakpup is here:
http://www.puppylinux.asia/members/Seeing-Eye-Puppy/
The exact download link (coblitz added) is here: http://coblitz.codeen.org/http://www.pu ... puprc2.iso
I notice that there is NO md5sum there. I'll see what I can do!
The Adriene Knoppix download link is:
http://coblitz.codeen.org/http://ftp.un ... -27-EN.iso
md5sum is http://ftp.uni-kl.de/pub/linux/knoppix/ ... EN.iso.md5
Best to all,

OK, this is something that I don't know if it's been addressed.
This will be the 660th post on this thread, so it would take a bit of time to find out if somebody already mentioned it.
There's a show on the Cable telly here in the States, probably everywhere, on the Science Channel.
"Robo-chick and the Bionic Boy"
Robo-chick is a lady who is blind, but was in the midst of an experiment where she had direct implants to her optic nerve, hooked by cables to a mobile computer with a link to a mini cam mounted on an eyeglasses frame.
There's some amazing promise in the techniques and technology involved, but...
The man who developed the program died in the middle of the experiment.
Since the hardware requirements are already met, already implanted...
And there was a HUGE leap of success in the project, basically they were in the midst of training her optic receptor neurons to "see" for the first time in decades, without overloading them...
But is there anybody on the Puppy Team who would be able to nudge the project back to life, or at least look into it?
All I know is the name of the show, it might be Discovery Channel rather than Science Channel.
I don't put much of my time into watching T.V. and it was just a fluke that I saw that segment of the show.
Cybernetics is way beyond my current skill levels and I personally couldn't do much but stand round saying really helpful stuff like "tsk tsk that looks bloody awful"
I also know that this project in question goes far beyond the scope of adapting the OS to work for persons who are blind.
...but that maybe, ah, I'll leave it to yourselves to finish out the concept.
I know, too, because I read a lot of Science Fiction, that this very thing has been a huge dream of Cyber researchers since before UNIVAC even.

He who skydive without parachute, jumps to own conclusion.
There's been a lot of chatter about special glasses for te blind, using microchips to stimulate neurons to restore vision to the blind. As for the OS they'd use, I have no idea, and really doubt that I'll ever come close to haveing the kind of expertise needed.

Vinux is ubuntu based, but pretty much the best Linux for Blind distro I've tried. It uses gnome, orca, yasr, and depending on your monitor, 2x or 3x magnification.

In another thread, Lobster asked if there would be a SFS file, of Speak-Pup. No there won't be. However, there is an SFS file that, when added to Puppy, will add accessibility functions to Puppy.
This does work with Puppy 410 Retro.
What you need:
1 - Mu's KDE sfs file from
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 44&t=26151
It includes KDE's accessibility stuff.
Rename the file to kde_version.sfs I used kde_410.sfs as I was using Puppy 410.
2 - Flite
http://users.ecs.soton.ac.uk/wmd04r/puppy/flite-1.3.pet
Festivial or freetts can be used.
Configuring the system
Open a terminal and type kttsd.
Click on ADD and Talker and select the speech system.
Close the kttsd window.
From the Menu, select utilities and ksayit
Click on configurte
Close the window.
A red mouth should appear on the lower left corner.
Copy anything you wish spoken to the KLIPPER program.
Click on the red mouth and then on say.

Trobin
Its great that you are working on this project
two thumbs up
from big_bass
*some personal info
during the time I built the fat free series
I had lost vision in my left eye due to a sudden accident
so the all those ISO's where built with much care
and they are small and easy to update I focus on stability
that accident left me out of action for several months
I decided quickly to keep busy
at that time I was in the USA and the one of "best" Doctors there
told me there was no chance of recovering my vision
so .......I went to Mexico had 2 more surgeries and
yes I can see !!!
I don't follow all the threads but if anyone PM's
me I would be glad to help
I really have no Idea what was fixed and what still needs fixing
I would need a "quick needs done list" of pending problems
and or a wish list
I have all my original unleashed builds on CD/DVD
could easily patch in special support if needed
or compile needed packages
I am glad Trobin someone is doing this a much respected work
