Trobin,

I using Finch in Puppy 3.01, I went through the task of finding the missing libraries, would you try running Finch in a terminal an then highlighting the output and send that to me via e mail.

I will send you the libraries by return email.

The list of missing dependencies goes off screen and I'm unable to scroll down to ead them. I tried finding and installing them one at a time but gave up shortly fter libncursesw.so.5. I think it was looking for libdbus-glib-1.so.2 when I gave up on it.

That was using the dotpet file. When I ran Finch in a terminal it would only say that one file was missing and woulddn't give me any more until that file was installed.

When I tried compiling from source, the finch command couldn't be found.

Managed to get some life out of CenterICQ.

I managed to connect to an old MSN account I have and to IRC. The IRC connection was not too successful. Not that that matters, because I'm not going to use it. Yasr and Cenericq do not play well with each other.

Much prefer listening to Irssi if I had to have a choice.

I using Pigin 2.2.2 but here is a pet for the latest one.

If you download this to a Puppy version that has X in it, start X and then install Pidgin. Then type finch in the terminal, it will either work, or it will give you the missing files.

If it scrolls off the screen, click down on the background, then hold the left mouse button and scroll upwards while continuing to hold the mouse button. Then when youŕe up at the top, click with the mouse, and sweep down, the text will be highlighted - and it is automatically copied.

Open up leafpad or your favorite editor and paste the contents of the buffer by pressing both left and right mouse buttons at the same time.

Iĺl copy the lib files you need and email them to you!!!

Yes, finch works with this version and finch --ver returns the new version of 2.4.0.

Pidgin 2.4.0 (which has finch in it)

It works quite well, but for a sighted person, Pidgin is much easier as you click the mouse and go. This finch requires you to tab through the options, and to select with space bar.

I finally did get Finch partially working in Fat-Free Puppy 3.00 At least to the point that I could set up an account.

Unfortunately when I got out of the program and re-entered it, it started compaining about python prefixes.

Listened to it under esoeak and I wasn't to thrilled with it. One of those programs where yasr wants to speak every mark that appears on screen. Something that I don't notice with IRSSI.

Irssi does have a status bar which yasr insists on reading but tht's not hearly as annoying as having yasr speak every mark because the programmers tried to make the screen look nice.

If you only have one account at the bitlbee derver you will be automatically logged into that account.

It may try to get yu logged into all of your accounts. There is a way to cyle through windows in Irssi. I just don't know how to do that yet.

I hope everyone is doing well. The flowers are finally out here - pink dogwood trees, cherry trees, and tulips.

I found a page of "best" CLI programs that I wanted to post.

I'm using elinks, and this fellow recommends lynx which I've used before also but I don't know if lynx supports https pages.

I found this today. Also the iso and the link to voxin.oralux.net on qww.orca.net and www.orca.org websites has vanished.

BUT I have found this page - it is not new, but it is difficult to find "for the blind" distros!

GMRL is still a live project, unlike a lot of other for the blind distros that have appeared and disappeared.

It does use flux box if you start x

I don't think it likes NTFS formatted drives.

It's a knoppix based distro

Type "grml swspeak" as a boot option. It did not give me an option to run xwindows. Let it go until it tells you that the boot process has finished. type swspeak and it will talk to you.

Flaws - I didn't much like it. First impressions I know. I found it difficult as sometimes the voice would spell the words and other times the voice would say the words. I'm sure that it is just a configuration problem.

I believe it uses speech dispatcher and espeak. Can be configured to use a hardware speech synthesizer or braille display.

Emacspeak is, I believe, present in the earlier versions of GRML but not in the latest.

It's worth a try and there are smaller versions rather than the full 690 mb
version I tried.

I did some more playing with it and wasn't able to get the speech system working with the xwindows system.

I do like the menuing system though.
