Thanks for the reply strangerandpilgrim and Subito Piano

Similar to you guys I am in a position of just not having the Linux/computer know-how for taking on anything like this and will just have to hope someone takes up the Churchpup project to lead it. It seems like a great established venture with a lot of potential for growth in the Christian community.

I do like the Concordia edition but I also share the opinion of others that there needs be a project like the original ChurchPup that has a more non-denominational approach and appeal to the church as a whole. No offense at all intended to the Concordia developer I certainly encourage any Christian to get involved and produce a great tool like that, and he certainly has a right too, but the Lutheran slant to the project IMHO does limit its scope and would keep some from getting involved or using it.

Livingwaters is a great project and I use it all the time, I do know from a few postings from ttuuxx he does have plans to keep livingwaters going for a while and will eventually release an updated version.
He is one of the developers for 4.2 since Barrry stepped down and is quite busy with that now.
But I too will anticipate future releases. He has been very helpful to me with both using livingwaters and a Bible program I was interested in.

I am new to Puppy and Linux, but as a new hobby I am planning on learning more and hope to someday be able to be involved in development on a Christian project like this.

One problem I think inherent to any of these projects, and even Puppy Linux itself, is having one person mainly doing most of the work. When anything happens to that one person either by choice or necessity and they move on to other things the project ends.

It needs to be a community effort. What keeps the larger Linux distros going is a larger community team approach, and by necessity Puppy is heading that way too.
I can really see the potential for Christians working together to use Linux as a great tool in the Church if a community approach is taken.

Blessings in Jesus,
Tom

P.S. Subito Piano I see you are from down in the "Family Life Network" area of NY. I am in Depew a suburb of Buffalo.
We get FLN up here and it is my favorite Christian radio station. I have been with my kids down to their ministry in Bath to see a Christian play. Great ministry, and a beautiful part of the state. I also have 5 kids and we homeschooled for a while, although my kids go to a Christian school now, with the first one off to college.

Yes Subito Piano is a great guy who been around these 2 releases ChurchPup and Living Water, The thing about ChurchPup is that its very similar to living water, originally it was missing a few faith programs that I introduced into living water and it had a larger wealth of regular main stream programs, Like Open Office, But the next release of living water will have a few versions, Originally my main goal with Living water was a scaled down version of Church Pup that offered more faith related software and less bloat. Which I think I achieved, :) It was 1/3 the size. But now that I've dabbled in kde&Gnome well Its hard to choose which and what etc, But I do like the kde version packages I've been working on, like koffice+bibletime+k3b it works well but when you reset icewm for some odd reason xorg fails and won't boot back. You have to shutdown and start over. So once I'm done 4.2 I'll be back on it again. And if nobody's running ChurchPup I might put my hand up, Its really only 3-4 very large applications away from 'Living Water'

well what was released was 4.2 alpha 3
If you want to see the packages I supplied for this release check out
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=38151
just scroll down the page a little.
For the next release I have a few programs to work out and a small amount of graphics to do, but It won't be long.
But yes my part is getting much smaller, atleast I hope so :)

Can you explain to me why the Puppy Team resolutely refuses to use voluntary push-mail to announce new releaes?

It seems a simple task that is also in everyone's best interest.

A simple web interface for sign-up could ask if they only want the Final, or if they want Alpha and/or Beta.

Well the way it works is that Puppy makes a few alpha's, then a beta, usually the beta is the end of the road, or they might have a last minute update version, but the 4 series looks like its going to continue for sometime and well thats good. Alphas really are for a small amount of testers, like alpha2 wouldn't even boot off the iso, Imagine if we e-mailed like 1000 people and they all downloaded a broken alpha, what a waste of server bandwidth. I didn't even download or try to get alpha 2 working. I just waited for this release. Betas on the other hand are very useful for most, they can be stable enough to be a main OS, but we are in alpha stage and a new release could happen every day, or every second day. Its really just for alpha testers and developers to fix and change things. This is the second alpha in around 3 days, But feel free to test them and place your results in the alpha release section matching which version your testing, extra bugs/Ideas are always needed. :) we are at the 100mb limit and need to scale a little down also.

OK re. the Alphas, let's postulate that 100% of your developers are clued into them.

Moving on to the Beta releases, I presume that you want as many testers as possible - why not a new Beta release notification list sign-up so people are made aware of a Beta when it is released so they may download and test it in a timely manner?

The nfor the Final the same thing? Many Puppy users don't even know when a new version has been released for weeks and sometimes months as they are busy with life - a simple push-mail would clue them in immediately.

It seems to me the same struggle as Apple had many years ago going from a small and well-networked community based out of a "garage" to a serious distro -- they had to start thinking outside of the box of geeks and start thinking in terms of their casual non-developer users who will not search the Puppy forum daily just in case there is news of a release.

See where I am going?

AFAIK no-one has refused to setup an auto mailer. There really is no such animal as the puppy team, people just contribute whatever they are interested in. At the moment official releases are announced in Barry's blog. There is also a dedicated news feed on puppylinux.org just for final releases. I could ensure that test versions are also announced on the puppylinux.org newsfeed which currently only generates 1-2 items every other month. Check out the rss link in my signature for details of the feeds. All you have to do is add the feeds to your newsreader and it will notify you automatically when there are new posts.

I imagine it would be fairly easy to add an auto-mailer to puppylinux.org which users could register for in their profiles but personally I am having too much fun building and testing software. Would you like to investigate how to set this up on the drupal CMS that puppylinux.org uses? Maybe do some research and post some links to howtos here.

Well, OK, they have ignored several requests to do so.

So Sally-non-geek user who is a busy mom and has a job has to check Barry's blog to be aware of a new release?

It is broken:
The page how tos/easy/rss feeds does not exist.
You can search for how tos/easy/rss feeds

The prior rss for Puppy that I tried generated the same 10 or so posts over and over and over day after day - it was too much noise to sort through so I gave up.

I could but since I am not in the loop on releases and my Drupal skills are really weak I'd think whoever manages the Drupal CMS on puppylinux.org would be the better person - besides they probably don't want anyone else messing around in there ... :-)

Do you know what version of Drupal they are using?

I can ask around for a reliable Module and send it to whoever manages puppylinux.org

thoughts --

ttuuxxx - I've got no vested interest in ChurchPup as opposed to Concordia or Living Water. LW is fast and light, very good. Mostly i'm interested in a solid Christian Puppy, and i REALLY want to see BibleTime or GnomeSword included in such a Puplet. The content filtering would be nice to include by default, although it's so easy to add ProCon or OpenDNS or whatever these days....maybe it's not critical. Long and short of it, if ChruchPup is eclipsed by LW and/or Concordia, that's progress! The idea of a couple editions (like Fire Hydrant) is good, allowing for one user who has an older machine preferring a lite version, and a sound man or secretary at a church needing a more inclusive, beefier version.

I tried resurrecting Chubby Puppy with 4.1 but didn't have time to perfect it. (You can search for PudgyPup on the forums, it's out there somewhere -- some might say it's REALLY "out there" --!! )

I can help with bandwidth -- we've got a lot of it where i host ChurchPup. Lemme know

Tom, hey, hooray for us upstaters! I'm in Horseheads, next to Corning and Elmira. Five kids and a homeschooler at heart myself, tho i'm now at a Christian school. Funny, i don't see anything parochial about Concordia -- it just includes the book of Concord. I lean toward a more John Wesley theology, i suppose, but to me it's not sectarian, it's just another resource -- ??!?!?

At any rate, good to have your input! ;-)

New Mirror

#236 Post by jms1989 »

Hello, I would like to let you folks know that I have created a mirror for the ChurchPup iso. Downloaded directly from the original site, you can find it here: http://www.michaelsweb.uni.cc/mirror/pu ... urrent.php

That php script will just redirect you to the real file, the purpose is to provide one link so it should never become broken unless I move to a different address.

The code in the script is:

Code: Select all

<?php header('Location: ChurchPup_RC2.iso'); ?>
To find all of my current mirrored files you can view http://www.michaelsweb.uni.cc/mirror/ Feel free to browse the rest of my site if you want. :)

Cheers

Hi! Yeah, i think i was the last one working with ChurchPup. I dropped any further development of it partly because i didn't want to distribute something with potentially illegal codecs (after all, it's a Christian Edition!!!) -- Also, the newest Puppy is SOOO easy to configure and BibleTime is available for it (although WHO KNOWS how to make the icons appear???!?!) -- using Wine to add BP Bible or TheWord is easy enough, though....

...anywho, if someone wants a copy of the old RC2 edition of ChurchPup for themselves, or a bloated version based on 4.2 with a working BibleTime, simply PM me. As long as i'm not really "distributing" it i'm fine with the codecs issue.

Also, there is a version of ProCon Latte available for SeaMonkey, a nice feature. Lemme know if you can't find it.

Blessings!

Hi Subito Piano,

Glad that you are still around, I've been missing your posts.

Anyone that needs a Bible study program needs to take a look at these threads, it's so easy now to make your own powerful Bible study pup.

HOWTO set up your own Bible study OS

e-Sword bible software installation

hi Subito Piano how's life been :)
I wouldn't as bibletime goes on 5 series, well with 5 series they are pretty lazy with packages, They usually use repackage bloated ubuntu packages as pets, I compiled a wack of them for them just for that reason. So we would have some more traditional package sizes. And well this is a fine extample
Bibletime on puppy 5 is 28MB pet
Xiphos/Gnome Sword compiled on 2.14X is 3.3MB
Bibletime/Gnomesword has always been around the same size. Now that Ximphos is qt based I compiled it statically saving 25MB.
As Codec's goes I don't think its a biggy, nobody has ever been charged over it, hmmm you do know MS has the patents for mouse control also and if they wanted to enforce that, then mac/linux would be keyboard driven only, somethings are just not relevant. Hmmm does MS own the rights to the windows key on just about every keyboard? If so does that mean if its not being used on windows machine then does that make it illegal also? so basically we would have to use a light pens to operate pc's? no mouse, no keyboard.
Like I said I wouldn't worry much about it :)

Thanks for the affirmation, Jim! :) Yeah...there's more to life than Linux...i'm now the principal at our little Christian school (translation: life is a BLUR) -- i do miss the forums and experimenting and such. Right now most of what i do computer-wise is install Mint or Puppy for desperate people...usually the only people who are open to Linux, unfortunately!

Oh! Hey Ttuuxxx!! Whatta help you've been over the years to me (and tons of others). Wild about BibleTime bloat compared to Xiphos. As for codecs, i realized they were fine for me to use as i know i'm not trying to pirate DVDs, but i myself am not sure i feel right distributing...not to put that on anybody else who believes differently (here in the US or wherever). Anyway, good to see you're still around. :D
