Hi Doc, I'll do my best to give you some answers (or at least some good excuses!)

The defaultimage viewer in ChurchPup is QIV for gif, jpg, and png. To fit the image to the screen, hit m after the picture opens. I decided to let the images display full size rather than resize to fit the screen by default. It seemed more useful to know what size the image really is. For more QIV options type qiv --help in the terminal

CUPS is not playing nicely

#63 Post by edoc »

I am having some trouble with CUPS - just tried to reinstall our HP OfficeJet 4215 and our Samsung laser printer.
Unable to connect.
Firefox can't establish a connection to the server at localhost:631.
I am not new to Puppy, I made some significant changes to the Puppy Wiki on the subject a while back:
http://puppylinux.org/wikka/Cups?show_c ... 1#comments

I am guessing that with the inclusion of CUPS inside Puppy and ChurchPup those instructions may no longer be valid - I am guessing that the version of CUPS and related apps has changed and may well cause conflicts. True?

I take it these printers are on a network? Forgive my ignorance but I have no experience with network printing. None was included in Churchpup. I guess the issue just never came up. I included the cups_espgs_gutenprint-1.1.23-8 package just so local printers would work and that's all.The necessary packages can of course be added by the user they should be listed in the Puppy package manager.

Your post lead me to discover that the samba_client-3.0.25b package is actually present in Churchpup. This was an oversight on my part. I thought I had excluded it so the user could install it at their option along with the other Puppy 3.01 packages.

Let me do a little research and get back with you Doc, Gotta go clean the Church now.

The Download...

#65 Post by barbar »

Hi, I am anxious to try this flavor of puppy, but the download is a little troublesome. Stop and go. Not a big deal, I just use a download manager. From earlier posts, it looks like other people had issues too. Is it cool if I make a .torrent of it? I would seed like, forever. If there are just a few dedicated seeders, the torrent would flow, and we might save the nice Christian school that hosts the site a few bucks in bandwidth.

Trying to load my USB modem

#67 Post by edoc »

Just acquired a Franklin CDU550 wireless USB modem.

I found some instructions reportedly from Franklin describing how to get it running in Linux.
Linux systems already have USB modem driver but needs to assign a device to a special node. After the assignment, user can use the node as a modem device.
I tried to follow the instructions (below) but am not certain how to proceed. It is very possible that I skipped a step or did something else incorrectly. Here are the steps I followed:

1. Opened geany
2. Pasted in all of the text following "Code:" below.
3. Saved as /root/my-applications/franklincdu550/cdu550.sh
4. cd to: /root/my-applications/franklincdu550
5. Clicked on "cdu550.sh"
6. No errors, just a new "#" prompt

Did I do things correctly?

How do I get Setup - Network Wizard to see my USB modem, please?

Attached file is a shell script to create a node for "C-motech" modem. The script produces nodes which mount modem as a serial device. The CDU-550 modem will be mounted on /dev/ttyACM# where # is a number, for example, /dev/ttyACM2.

GhostScript?

#68 Post by edoc »

Sorry to be a pest, again ...

I just went to load the drivers for my Samsung laser printer and received an error saying that it required GhostScript in order for the Samsung app to run.

I did not get that same error on our desktop, which has ChurchPup installed - also as a Full HDD install.

Is there a .pup for GhostScript somewhere that is ChurchPup compatible, please?

EDIT: With the Samsung drivers installed on the host computer (the desktop to which the Samsung is connected via USB) When I go to print I can see it from my laptop even without the Samsung drivers loaded. It is seen only as the CUPS/lp printer but does appear to be functioning from both. It used to always show up as a Samsung and I may not have access to all of the features, I am not certain yet. Oddly, CUPS Administration shows the following:

Samsung ML-2250 Series (SPL II) on 192.168.1.102
Description: Samsung ML-2250 Series (SPL II)
Location: Location Unknown
Printer State: idle, accepting jobs.
"Waiting for job to complete..."
Device URI: pdf-writer:/export/share/pdf/
Meanwhile I still have to figure out what is clogging up my HP printer. The CUPS Administration app was showing it as a RAW printer. I have deleted that and will try to reinstall.

CUPS Administration shows 3 PDF Printers, which may be a source of conflict. Should I delete the second two?

Ghostscript
Description: CUPS-PDF

CUPS-PDF@192.168.1.101 Ghostscript on 192.168.1.101
Description: CUPS-PDF
Location: Location Unknown
Printer State: idle, accepting jobs.

CUPS-PDF@192.168.1.102 Ghostscript on 192.168.1.102

Hi, You posted again white I was writing this :)

Hello Doc,

Pest? Never! ChurchPup has ESP Ghostscript Version 8.15.4 and something described as a cutdown afpl ghostscript v8.54 in gsview the postscript viewer. They were part of the original package selection for puppy 3.01 that Churchpup is based on.
I don't even pretend to know what ghostscript is for other that to render postscript documents. Have you been able to print using this printer on any other puppy version? May we need to try a different version of CUPS for compatibility with more printers. Not much in the way of an answer I know.
I just went to load the drivers for my Samsung laser printer and received an error saying that it required GhostScript in order for the Samsung app to run.
Were you using CUPS to set up a printer or something else? Maybe if you could describe in a little more detail it would rattle something in my mind. (don't count on that though)

Samsung is working acceptably for now.

HP is not - will try closing everything down and doing a reboot to see if something is in a buffer somewhere causing a conflict - I have seen that with CUPS Admin. in the past.

I loaded espgs-install.sh and hpijs-install.sh

CUPS Administration sees and loads my HP OfficeJet 4215 OK now.

However, when I send a print job nothing happens.

My HP is connected to this laptop via USB and had been working fine previously.

I am guessing there is a USB conflict somewhere - what is the best step-by-step
troubleshooting protocol for locating a USB conflict, please?

I am also seeing some sort of conflict when I reboot - the desktop freezes with the verse shown and nothing but powering-off the laptop breaks it loose.

The only thing I recall changing is the desktop background.

EDIT: The Reboot problem has resolved (don't know why) but the HP printer problem remains. No error messages, print job is merely dispatched to nowhere land! :-(

MPlayer and 3GP?

#72 Post by edoc »

Is there a plug-in for MPlayer in ChurchPup that will handle 3GP?

I can see the video but get an audio codec error.

I spotted a mention of 3GP and MPlayer here:

Hi Doc,
To answer your question, no.
I've done a little reading on the Net about this, and the solution seems to be compiling mplayer with certain options to get it to work. Way over my head.
Good news though! Realplayer for Linux seems to work on these files. I downloaded from http://www.real.com/linux/ opened a terminal in the download directory and typed ./RealPlayer10GOLD.bin to start the install. Also needed to make the .bin file executable. You might want to download to /usr/local just so it's not in your /root folder. Audio and video worked for me with this player.

Hope this helps!

Thanks! I am downloading it now!

EDIT 1: Uh Oh. I downloaded to my /root/my-downloads folder and got this:

Code: Select all

# ./RealPlayer10GOLD.bin
bash: ./RealPlayer10GOLD.bin: Permission denied
#
EDIT 2: OK, figured out that when "Permissions" offers the change option that includes "Make executable" it doesn't mean that is the current state - so I changed it and it ran.

I ran the install from /root/my-downloads, this may have been a mistake as after couple of questions (I guessed at the answers) it then asked about system-wide symbolic links and I chose "Y" then it asked about a prefix for symbolic links and I accepted the offered default [/usr] ... here are the results:
Copying RealPlayer files...configure system-wide symbolic links? [Y/n]: ..Y.
enter the prefix for symbolic links [/usr]: ..
Setting up realplay symlinks in /usr...
configuring icons...
configuring document icons...
configuring pixmaps...
configuring locale...
install: cannot create regular file `/usr/share/locale/hi/LC_MESSAGES/realplay.m o': No such file or directory
install: cannot create regular file `/usr/share/locale/hi/LC_MESSAGES/libgtkhx.m o': No such file or directory
configuring desktop...
Configuring realplay script...

RealPlayer installation is complete.
Cleaning up installation files...
Done.

#
EDIT 3: I ignored the errors, used the terminal window to go to /usr/bin and started realplayer. Then I opened my VID 00000.3GP file and was told that RealPlayer was unable to open it. I followed the offered Update path and was told that my RealPlayer install was up to date (though I noted, oddly, the the URL included a subfolder named /2004.)

As we work through the RealPlayer install ...

I've got a new one for you ... of course!

When I try to upload a mov file to GodTube it goes all the way to 100% then crashes Firefox. (I have filed an error report with Firefox for each of my four attempts.)

At the end of an upload GodTube is supposed to pop up an upload confirmation window.

Any idea if one of my Firefox settings might be the cause of this?

I have some neat video clips from our New Year's Eve Celebration and really would like to link them at GodTube from our new Web site.

Firefox and Real player

#75 Post by PrairieDog »

Howdy Doc,

You got the same terminal messages as I did. The file I was playing was one I found on the net just to test with. Is it possible there are more than one type of 3GP file like there is with avi? To be honest I never ran into that file extension till you mentioned it. Maybe you could attach a .3gp to an email so I could experiment? Two heads and all that. :)

I have had trouble with the latest Firefox crashing too. in the past I usually blamed the flash plugin.I put all the browser plugins in /root/.mozilla and made absolute links to them in /usr/lib/firefox/plugins. That has always worked out for me. I'll check the Adobe site to see if I'm using the right one and report back.

Be thankful unto him, and bless his name.

Doc, I don't know if this will help but it's worth a try. In /root /.mozilla/plugins there is a file called flashplayer.xpt. It is probably simlinked to /usr/lib/firefox/plugins when it should be linked (or just moved) to/usr/lib/firefox/components. according to mozilla that's where it belongs. (my bad) Could you do me a favor and delete the simlink, move or relink the flashplayer.xpt, and try Godtube again? I don't have any God-oriented videos to upload myself

Just tried this and unless I'm imagining it,Flash sites seem to load faster.

Sorry for the delayed reply, family and ministry stuff ...

I moved flashplayer.xpt to /usr/lib/firefox/components and deleted the symlink
in /usr/lib/firefox/plugins -- no improvement in the crashing behavior.

A friend uploaded a large file for me to GodTube using Firefox under the MS version of windows called XP via his high-speed Verizon FIOS connection and it worked fine.

I also just opened gFTP and it also crashed. I reopened and did a file upload and it was OK. I am guessing that something somewhere is making Firefox and other Internet-related apps unstable. I have not observed any problems with Thunderbird ... yet.

Is there anything here that may assist in diagnosing the problem?

http://kb.mozillazine.org/Firefox_crashes

I read this text on this sub-page:

"Many "Firefox" problems are caused by incompatible themes or extensions. See if the problem goes away when you switch to the default theme or, if the problem appeared after installing a new extension or after upgrading Firefox, try updating, disabling or uninstalling your add-ons before going through the diagnostic steps below.:

Hello Doc,

What I read makes sense. I might hazard a guess that some add on extension might be causing the problem. I'm running firefox now without any add ons to see what happens. It seems this started happening with firefox 2.0.0.11 so maybe it was out of step with Procon Latte or the add-on theme.

Thanks for helping us debug!

Mark
