icon manager is buggy
yes the icon manager does not work properly and that is why i had chosen to stick to rox pinboard as icon manager. i have posted earlier how to start ede with rox as icon manager.
ede is much slower than other window manager but it gives a familiar feel for the winblows refugee. look and feel can be changed using themes.

eiconman as iconmanager
Those of who liked the icon manager but till wanted the good features of other wm's suck as icewm can use eiconman as thier icon manager instead of rox in the following manner. equinox needs to be installed for this to work.
1. click on home
2. make visible all the hidden files
3. you will see .xinitrc in it
4. make a copy of it by copying it to .xinitrc-bak
5. open it as text and scroll to the bottom where it says -> rox
6. comment this line and below it put this exec eiconman &
7. save
8. restart x

Unfortunately i can do neither. I am just a USER and APPRECIATER. Coding is not in my brains. (However little)
When i tried the available binaries a graphical screen with the Puppy desktop wallpaper will make a fleeting appearance and immediately disappear dumping me back to the command line.

Downloaded the file from MU and it installed without a hitch on Puppy 1.0.6.
Seems about as fast as the other window managers for Puppy, and is very comfortable for someone comming over from Windows. Seems very stable so far, I have not encountered any problems with it yet.
But I'll keep looking.

Hmm,bombayrockers wrote:equinox is still under development and not stable. I remember that the special effects in equinox do not work and it crashes, esp the menu effects.
Are these effects enabled by default? I have not seen anything I would consider an effect, just a clean, quick menu. No stability issues either.

Thanks for the warning.

There's a fairly new lightweight distro called STX using EDE as the default WM.
I've tested it on my old laptop, which has video problems in Puppy.
It's not bad, except for a bug with dialup modem connections.

A new version of STX is expected after Christmas. There are network bugs being fixed now, so you might as well wait.
I believe there are plans for a liveCD version. If you can read German you might find more information at: http://www.smp.soundhost.de/smf/index.php
I see the distro as complementary to Puppy on older systems, eg STX on your hard drive and Puppy live.

STX website in english
Here's the link to the STX (Stix) site in english. found it the other day while floating around.

The truth is out there.
I'm trying to figure out how to install new themes in EDE. Has anyone had success with this?
