Installed OK on my machine

- how does it compare size wise with JWM, fvwm95 (using this) and Icewm. It seems very much simpler in look and feel for Windows users but it's quite a bit larger Sad

Is that right?

Does the control-center work for you?

On my System it does not react to mouseclicks.

It's a bigger download isn't it? Maybe that's because of the required files? It works fast for me though.

From the Equinox web site

"Equinox Desktop Environment (shortly EDE) is small desktop environment, built to be simple and fast. It is based on modified FLTK library (called extended FLTK or just eFLTK).

It's worth perservering with, I think.

I think we should have a closer look, and maybe add it to the Wiki after we found a solution for the menue, so people easily can find and install it using the Dotpup-Downloader.

I have comeup with dotpup of equinox 1.0.4 for puppy

Salient features of this new user friendly / newbie friendly version
1. menu for puppy 1.0.5
2. your programs that are missing from the menu can be added to user programs using panel > menu editor
3. unnecessary things such as docs are removed to reduce size
4. this dotpup includes all libs (including libstdc++ & libpng ) so you have to download just one file. few clicks and your ede is ready to go.
5. ecalc scientific calculator
6. efluid <- gui designer for ede

Surprises
1. Those who want to use rox as the icon manager and ede as windowmanager should start ede using
xwin startede
2. Those who want to use ede's own icon manager rather than rox should start ede using
xwin startedefull

IMPORTANT->for this to be possible i had to edit the .xinitrc file located in /root/ . So during installation when asked to overwrite /root/.xintrc click on OK.

I'm a little dissapointed with Equinox desktop. It looked very promising. A few peeves:

There seems to be zero structural configuration. The only structual options are title bar justification and taskbar/panel autohiding. (Plently of superficial configuration, like colors and pixmaps.) No matter what you do with the desktop, it will always look more or less the same.

The main 'start' menu is laggy. Nearly half a second on my system.

The virtual/multiple desktops are also pretty weak. It takes two clicks to switch desktops. No preview, no keyboard shortcuts, no wheel scrolling.

Then again, I regularly use JWM heaviliy customized. To the point where it looks more like Blackbox than JWM.

On my system I feel no difference in speed, but it is a celeron 2200 with 700 MB Ram. On slower ones you might feel differences, but they should not be big I think.

Ede has a menue-editor, the others not.

But I wrote an JWM-export for my own Menueeditor: http://www.murga.org/%7Epuppy/viewtopic.php?t=1985

The advantageof Fvwm/JWM is this:

Puppy internally uses scripts to update the menues.

This happens if you remaster a CD, and also many Dotpups will add entries to these Menues.

With EDE this is not the case, so if you install Dotpups, you must add them to the menue using the EDE-menue-editor.

The rest is a question of personal preference.
EDE is set up with its control-Panel (Theme, colors), Jwm/Fvwm do it with the tool in the Setup-Menue.

I would suggest just to install it and give it try, then you will see how it reacts on your system, and what is more convenient for you Smile

The fastest is probably fluxbox (dotpup)
The most reliable is fvwm95 (pupget)
JWM froze on me yesterday (boo) - I am very unforgiving and immediately moved to fvwm95, which has never ever done such a thing. In the past JWM has not been reliable (on my hardware) In the last 2 or 3 Puppys it has been very much more reliable
Equinox looks nice and seems to offer a control panel to do stuff I do not really need to do . . .
Icewm (many themed dotpups - plus the main one which you require) has proved stable and configerable
Speed = reliability - a wm with a speed factor = o (not working) even once does not interest me

fvwm95 when you refresh (restart fvwm95) retains the open on screen programs - JWM (on my computer loses them)
So which is faster.

Using the GTK theme and change desktop I can change sufficient to my needs.

So my listing at the moment in order of preference - not speed based is:

I had trouble setting the background with the new version of Equinox. Has anyone else experienced that?

This maybe should be a new topic, but following from Lobster's post (and I'm unforgiving also), my favorite WMs are:

1) IceWM (True Curves theme): beautiful and functional.
2) Equinox: Familiar.
3) Fluxbox: Fast.
