   :) :P :D

Happy to anounce i have made a customized version of the EDE (Equinox Desktop Environment) for puppy. I have used EDE 1.0.2 rpms. The latest version available is 1.0.4 but rpms are not available at source forge and version 1.0.3 rpms fail to open with unrpm

EDE Screen shots at --> http://ede.sourceforge.net/page/screenshots

An introduction

EDE has 3 main components
1. edewm - the wm
2. edeworkpanel - the taskbar
3. eiconman - the desktop

as in puppy we are using rox to manage the desktop, so i have not used eiconman. Only 1 and 2 are implemented. I am working on the menu at present. Will release a dotpup as soon as it is completed.

I guess you had more patience.
I kept getting error loading some kind of image I forget.
So, when are you going to make a dotpup or a tar.gz or something for the rest of us???

KLH has given over the project to me. So anybody who wants the sources version of EDE (7mb) drop me a message. This is the latest version that comes with all the utilities but needs to be compiled so somebody who is good at all it may please take over this from me.

I have an older version 1.0.2 (2Mb) seen in the screen shot. it is ready to run but does not have all the utilites. can somebody help me make a dotpup out of that or may be i can give you the all files if you can make a dotpup.

You might give me the files, and I'll make a dotpup.

I use the dotpup-wizard for this:

http://www.murga.org/%7Epuppy/viewtopic.php?t=2138

Can I download them somewhere?
Or send them via EMail: MarkUlrich+++@---gmx.de

Remove +++ and --- , I don't want spambots to regognize my adress.

New Way of installing

My unfamiliarity with linux has been hampering me in making a dotpup
but i have found out a new way of installing files.

zip files can be used to install out EDE without using dotpup

several zip files used because of size constraints on the forum

THOSE USING PUPPY 1.0.4 Need to download ALL ZIP FILES
1. usr1.zip
2. usr2.zip
3. usr3.zip
4. lib1.zip
5. lib2.zip

THOSE USING PUPPY 1.0.5 Need to download ONLY
1. usr1.zip
2. usr2.zip
3. usr3.zip
the library dependencies are provided by puppy-1.0.5

APLHA APLHA APLHA - i dont know weather any body has tried this or not and what can it do. Before istalling EDE please backup your pupxxx file so that if something goes wrong you are safe.

place these zip files in the ~ folder <-- the topmost folder

click on usr1.zip <-- guiTAR utility will open - if it does not start guiTAR manually

select all files and click on EXTRACT

that all - repeat with other zip files.

the menu was made for puppy-1.0.4 so some things might not work in 1.0.5

a new menu for 1.0.5 will be comming soon

Libs required in 1.0.4 ONLY

NOTE : please note one more thing i forget write above is that unzip these files to the ~ folder <- topmost folder visible as / in guiTAR

There was some confusion

NOTE : i just found out that the libs are required for 1.0.5 also
i had a copy 0f /usr stored in /root/usr and so the libraries were showing in my /usr/lib folder and i thought that they are not required for 1.0.5

NOTE 2: VERY IMPORTANT - the binaries that are extracted in /usr/bin folder have to be given executable permission - without this ede wont start

NOTE 3 : to start ede --> xwin startede
startede has been edited to keep rox as the desktop. this will not start the iconmanager. to start the icon manager edit startede. and comment out rox in .xinitrc

I made a dotpup (2.3MB):

http://noforum.de/dotpups/equinox.pup

I seperated 2 System-libraries to avoid conflicts when you want to uninstall equinox using pupget.

If you don't have them on your system, install them too, or equinox will not work.

Some impressions:
Extremely fast Desktop, looks more like Windows than Fvwm95.

Unfortunately the panel minimizes to invisibility and all open windows become invisible, if I turn Shadows on/off using the Xorg-Xserver.
But most people will not use that, so it does not matter so much.

Nice thing, maybe someone should write a script that updates the Equinox-Menue with the jwm-entries.

How do you change to EDE from another WM? It doesn't show up as a menu option.

bombayrockers explained it further up.

Exit X
Then type
xwin startede

Not all programs are listed in the EDE-Startmenue.

If you run equinox-Desktop, open in rox the folder /usr/bin

There click on the files beginning with e

Equinox requires some more configuration for Puppy.

Thanks. It's a neat desktop. I like the control panel feature.

Yes I agree it is very nice :) Installed OK on my machine

- how does it compare size wise with JWM, fvwm95 (using this) and Icewm. It seems very much simpler in look and feel for Windows users but it's quite a bit larger :(

Is that right?

Does the control-center work for you?

On my System it does not react to mouseclicks.

It's a bigger download isn't it? Maybe that's because of the required files? It works fast for me though.

From the Equinox web site

"Equinox Desktop Environment (shortly EDE) is small desktop environment, built to be simple and fast. It is based on modified FLTK library (called extended FLTK or just eFLTK).

"Compared to other desktop environments, EDE is much faster and smaller in memory space (EDE's window manager use less memory than xterm)."

and from here: http://www.nongnu.org/equinox/about.html

"This will not be a big (big = loading 5 minutes into memory) environment, I doing it just for fun and cause I need a really useable desktop environment. Gnome and KDE are fine, but eat a lot of RAM. Big problem in Linux is that there are so many GUI toolkits. But probably the best toolkit I know is Fast Light Tool Kit (library has about 400kb, load fast, use C++, simple and efective classes)."

It's worth perservering with, I think.

*lol* stupid me, you are right

I think we should have a closer look, and maybe add it to the Wiki after we found a solution for the menue, so people easily can find and install it using the Dotpup-Downloader.
