I would have tried to find the answer in this thread but I see the latest reply is over a year old, others much older, so I'll just ask.

I just took your puppy for a walk, (fire hydrant 3.01) found on the pulets page, thinking it is the latest offering.

It is great, really quick and has lot's of useful things, unbelievable for it's size. The only trouble is I would really like to recommend this to others based on the feature list and performance, but I have quite a big problem with the icons and wallpaper on starting it.

Half of the icons are just "cogs" and you can't tell what they do if you don't recognise the name, and also the wallpaper seems eratic, sometimes blank, sometimes dark, and sometimes clouds.

Maybe it's me not doing something, but I can't figure it out. Could anyone tell me if this is a known problem, whether I could get a different version that doesn't do this, or whether it's just plain old user error.

thanks in advance

wow that sounds strange, I never had that issue with it, if you give me say 2 days, I'll have another look at that release, I'm almost finished helping out 4.2 and it might be released this weekend. So after that my time is free once again.

Thanks for the reply ttuuxxx, however I think it was user error - something to do with files/folders from another install of 4.1.2 on my drive, which I have got rid of and the problem seems to be cured too.

It's looking good now, but has rather too many icons and menu items for my needs, I will try to find out how I can lose some of those in the fullness of time.

The only problem I have now is Gparted doesn't deem to work - it just gets stuck scanning for ages, it finds drives eventually after several minutes though

I wonder what's causing that, because it's the best tool I have found for the job, but I can't always wait for it when it seems like it's not working

Ya gparted was like that, what you could do is update Gslapt, then search for gparted, and update it. It might just do the trick. :)

Colonel Panic wrote:Thanks. Sadly, it locked up again and for no obvious reason so at the moment I'm back using puppyluvr's Icecat 3.01, though using the savefile I had from Featherweight. I'm not saying it was the fault of Featherweight but so far (3 hours' later) this combo hasn't crashed or locked up, so I'm sticking with it for the time being.

I've had lockups in several other distros I've used. It's always the same thing; the caps lock and scroll lock lights start flashing in unison and nothing works at all so I have to switch the computer off and start again.

The one it hasn't happened with yet is Lighthouse, for some reason (and even tazoc admits he doesn't know why). I'm going to try some others soon to see how they work out in this regard.
Hi. I've added some more swap (now up to 796 MB) and tried Featherweight again yesterday, and so far it's been fine, no lockups at all. Just thought you'd want to know.

Thanks for all the hard work etc.

Regards,

CP .

(BTW, using Firepup too).

Just did a frugal install on a ext3 formated drive, boots fine but upon reboot it doesn't load the savefile(savefile is in folder named 300). Here is my menu.lst entry

title 300
kernel (hd0,0)/300/vmlinuz PMEDIA=idehd PDEV1=hda1 psubdir=300 pnpbios=off
initrd (hd0,0)/300/initrd.gz
boot
Dell D610 1.7M w/1024mb
Testing Slacko and a few others
I'm Max Wachtel and I approve this message.

Thanks for the new link.

But I can only use the FHjwmc because the big one like the FHabi or FHoopen are not work right one not detect Ethernet card and the other (FHopen) its can be extracted from iso file for frugal install, gives and error.

I just tried it, and noted that Smokey01 doesn't like download managers -- open the link and use a standard "save" to save the file (don't right click to save).

The save file for a Puppy from this era needs to go in the root directory. As a bonus, it doesn't particularly care which disk or partition that root directory is from.

dpup is bogging on this old hardware:
Dell Latitude cpi D266XT 266MHZ with 124MB ram and 5GB hard drive.
i'm hope to use this as my main OS.

"fire hydrant featherweight" is my favorite due to gimpshop, shutterbug and graveman. :D

Is there an pet for adding "Startup" folder or one for ttuuxxx's "updated petget"? (form classic 2.14x)

only thing i'll add is yeahwm,feh,htop,hardinfo,links2,logout and yeahlaunch. (my other favorites)

thank you

EDIT: found the startup folder .pet
