Did an experiment.
Downloaded and compiled cdrtools-3.01a16 in Racy 5.5 (made a .pet).
Booted Lucid 528-005 pfix=ram
Installed cdrtools-3.01a16.pet
Installed gtkdialog-r514.pet
Installed pBurn-4.0.3.pet
Started pBurn from menu (and console) and looked at the dependency check. I didn't try to use it but no obvious errors or problems.
Strictly AT YOUR OWN RISK if you repeat this.

Again I followed your steps, and got the same result as you did.
This computer has a CD-RW/DVD-ROM drive, so maybe I'll try Pburn to make a data or audio CD; have not yet done any burning on this computer.
Lucid Puppy 5.2.8-005
LATER: Did those steps with the savefile loaded, and again duplicated your results. Tried burning data to a 4X CD-R. Seemed to "freeze" at the end, without any clear message. Eventually was able to eject the disc.
Tried another disc, this time set speed to 4X.
Again ended without any message that told me (sorry, inexperienced) it was finished.
Was able to mount the disc and see the data.
Will do more tests later.

Hi.
My problem is related to:
When I start the writing-process it immediately fails. In the LOG-File I have the following Infos.
I tried a different DVD but it doesn't work either.
Reading DVDs (which I burned on another PC with Windows XP) is no problem. And PBurn even indicates that a blank disc with 4.38GB of free space is inserted. I also bootet the PC with Precise 5.4.3 (which has PBurn 3.7.5) but I have the same problems there.
The DVDs that I use are new out of the package. And they are normal DVD-Rs not DVD-RWs.
Has anyone an idea what's wrong here? Could it be that my DVD drive is dying though I still can read any disc no matter if it's CD or DVD?
Greetings,
Omega

My problem is related to:
- Puppy Precise 5.4.3
Puppy Precise 5.6.1

@Flash: I have an Intel Celeron M CPU with 1.4GHz and 512MB RAM (I think 32MB are used for the on-board graphics card). I tried both writing variants a) "on the fly" and b) "from an temporary ISO file". In the first case, the error occured immediately after a few seconds. In the second case, the program created an ISO file first (which takes a while) and then when it tried to actually write the data to DVD the same error comes up. (And a dog barks which scared me to death the first time. )

This error seems related to one of the external 'modules':
1. The Burning backend
2. Hardware - ie your burner device
3. Media - the disc(s)
The only thing that I can help improving is the burning backend. Since you are using the pBurn-3, you most likely use cdrkit or cdrtools-2 as backend - else you run Slacko 5.5 or Fatdog. The latest pBurn is relying on cdrtools-3 only, and it would be great to hear if this could improve the burning experience. The Slacko 5.6 beta contains a recent pBurn with backend. If you test this, it could either solve or eliminate one of the 3 error sources.

@zigbert: I'm not experienced in dealing with Linux (=beginner). I don't know what terms like cdrtools-2 or pBurn-3 mean. All I know is that I use Puppy Precise 5.6.1 / PBurn 3.7.18 (and I also tried burning with Precise 5.4.3 / PBurn 3.7.5 - but this fails too with the exact same log file).
The DVDs are likely not the problem because I use the same brand on another PC and with my DVD recorder all the time.
How can I test the DVD drive?

Omega, download Slacko 5.6 beta from the link Zigbert gave, burn it onto any kind of CD or DVD except DVD-RAM (with Menu -> Multimedia -> Burniso2cd - obviously if that works your burner is ok) and boot the newly burned CD or DVD in your computer with the puppy pfix=ram boot option. Then you can try burning with the Pburn in Slacko 5.6 beta. The result will help Zigbert troubleshoot.
@Flash @zigbert
Okay. I did the following:
- downloaded the "slacko-5.5.70-SCSI.iso" from the link zigbert posted
- burned the ISO with "burniso2cd" to a CD-RW
- bootet the computer with the CD-RW
- when slacko finsihed loading, I startet PBurn (Version 4.0.2) and repeated the same steps that I did in Precise.
(that means: burning two puppy-save files (that are clearly not in use) to DVD-R)
Result: The same error occured that occured in Precise. I post the new LOG-file here. Interesting that erasing and creating a CD-RW with burniso2cd was successfull with the drive in question.

Hi Omega,
Kindly advise if my understanding is correct - that you want to copy 2 x 512 MB save files from another drive (one from Puppy Precise 5.4.3, the other from Puppy Precise 5.6.1) to a DVD-R.
As you have a DVD-RW can you (as a test) put them both on that?
Then, if you can, and if that is close to what you want - (or even if thats fails) - exactly how would you anticipate using those files in future?
My regards
