Lobster, I'm fascinated by Mark's contribution on that page. In fact I downloaded his dotpups because as you may have gathered I've stayed my foray into recent versions having discovered that halfway through the ver 2 (2.12 onwards and also all the v3 so far, one cannot get them to run on a range of not so recent computers, of which there are many going begging for free or nearly free, and which will run really well with what I suspect are earlier kernels.

I believe earlier Puppy needs to still target that market, so I've been working away for some weeks with dev versions of 2.10pro and 2.02r2, using my developed menus and a limited range of add-on apps, with considerable success.

This is why I've had to avoid joining Robert's "Talking Stick" as I can sense a need for some of those early machines to be updated in looks.

Anyway, being familiar with the Gnome desktop (through Sun Java Desktop System v2 - based on SuSE 8.2 - and from LinuxMint v3 which also offers XFCE as an optional WM) I'm intrigued with the mixture of a Gnome and a JWM taskbar on 2.11 using MU's modifications. I do have problems, and realise I'm not as knowledgeable as I had hoped.



I'm struggling with the ability to select the Gnome desktop (and get it work) - except by accident - and also to locate the whereabouts of the Gnome menu structure - which needs to be edited manually to be useable. But I guess either I'll stumble across both, or someone will prod me in the right direction

The strange thing is that if you perchance get a (background-less) Gnome desktop up and running, you automatically lose the Gnome taskbar. However, you can get it back, but the Gnome desktop's icons need moving when that happens. It is far from perfect in its initial state... needs more work... will report back...

I too would like a gnome compatible Puppy.

I work with a group of genealogists that use GRAMPS and a Puppy that will run GRAMPS will be a BIG hit with the locals...and other genealogists world wide.

Screenshot attached, Gramps running in Muppy-Mini 008.2 + addon.sfs.
You also could try the addon.sfs in another Puppy.
After I extracted the debian package on a external partition, I just symlinked usr/share/gramps to /usr/share, and then ran the binary "bin/gramps".

What works , what not :

The "Exit" dialog only shows: "<Change user> <Cancel> <Log out>" reason: GDM not installed because I don't know how to make it work
gnome-mount, can't mount CD/DVD drives (only works with /bin/mount-FULL instead of /bin/mount)
gnome-mount, error "The volume '<volume name>' uses the udf file system wich is not supported by your system" trying to mount a DVD(video)
gnome-mount, removable devices are not displayed until you restart the messagebus and hald services.

As soon as I get my internet connection back to somewhat reliable I'll give it a go....this will make a lot of people happy to run GRAMPS on a small fast distro. Most of the ones I know use older kit so this should fit right in.
MU..I'll try the addons.sfs on 3.01 and let you know how it goes.

OK gonna have to get a HD soon to try Gentoo + Puppy, Gnome in Puppy and I wonder what other projects will emerge.

This is just a preview, highly experimental, some features are not available or doesn't work properly.

The final SFS will be ready when Dingo becomes final.

Usage:

Boot Dingo-alpha-6 in ram mode(pfix=ram) then add the user 'haldaemon' and the group 'haldaemon'. Remove this file: 'gtkrc-2.0' to avoid problems with the gtk theme in Gnome.


Install [Dingo-Xorg-DRI.pet]
Copy gnome-2.20.3test01_396.sfs to the same partition where the new pup_save.2fs will be saved.
Now reboot and save the session.

To start GNOME exit X and type:

Notes:
1. I compiled everything with puppy-3.96-seamonkey-k2.6.24.iso, for the i686 architecture and with the '/usr' prefix.
2. This SFS was packed with squashfs 3.3 and can't be mounted with earlier versions.
3. If the 'Computer' directory is empty repeat all my install instrucctions carefully.
4. If you had xvesa as the X server you will see an strange error window regarding something about the keyboard, this is normal in xvesa(AFAIK).
