xmms: multimedia player

#1 Post by muggins »

Here's xmms v1.2.11, thanks to Dougal's prompting. Start with Menu->Multimedia->XMMS

If you want to change the appearance, download alternative skins from here:

http://www.xmms.org/skins.php

Save the relevant tar.gz file, without extracting, to /root/.xmms/Skins, then when Xmms is open, press Alt+S and Xmms will recognise any gzipped skins in /root/.xmms/Skins directory.

Is there any chance you'll be including the locales in a future ,pet?

What is the problem with just extracting the xmms locales .tar.bz2, above, to / ?

The reason they are separated from the main .pet is just to get the .pet under the forum upload limit of 1M.

I tried it, even have dotpups somewhere on my HD...

It's very different to xmms: it's a daemon type player, that runs in the background and you have the gui "clients" that connect to it and play tracks from the database it keeps...

I don't know if it does streaming -- you should try their website... (probably xmms2.sourceforge.net or something).

Just adding some information: there are extra XMMS input plugins here -
http://dotpups.de/dotpups/Multimedia/xm ... s-plugins/

but these install to locations compatible with Dougal's earlier XMMS v1.2.10 dotpup.
To use these plugins with muggins' XMMS, you would need to shift them from /usr/local/lib/xmms/input to /usr/lib/xmms/input

Similar story with XMMS skins from here -
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=13056

Regarding the Xmms-MPlayer plugin from http://xmmsmplayer.sourceforge.net/ ... forget it!
I compiled this plugin some time ago and abandoned it in disgust. With XMMS and MPlayer running at the same time CPU usage is significantly higher, and poor video playback performance will then be noticeable on older computers.
XMMS is great for audio, but if you want to play video ... use a video player.

If the old files actually got overwritten, then you did. Otherwise, if the two different packages installed to two different places, it depends on which one comes up first through the path (I suppose that's why the which command is named that).

Easy method: Run XMMS, then right-click it and go to "about" (right at the top). If that has the correct version number, then you probably updated.

Thanks for listing the URL for the skins Muggins! And gee... here I thought I had them all. LOL! Seriously though, they had a lot of very nice skins there that don't ever get added to the "theme packs" you see floating around, or normally tend to get packaged with XMMS, and that's too bad as there truly are some great, artistic ones at that site. Ah well... That's life.

Thanks again mate!
