fatdog64 & pwidgets

#1 Post by dolphinsupernova »

Hi Everyone,

I'm sorry if this turns out to be a dumb question, but I'm trying to find out if pwidgets will work in Fatdog64?

I'm not new to Puppy but am new to a 64bit system. I've just built myself an Intel Atom D510MO mini itx system and found that Fatdog64 is superb on it. However, I do usually like a bit of bling and so would love to either use pwidgets (or conky) but am aware these are generally used on 32bit systems.

Can anybody help me out or point me in the right direction?

Thanks,
Adrian

pwidgets is a combination of scripts and binaries. The scripts are probably ok and can run without modification, but you need specific 64bit binaries for fatdog. You can ask pwidgets maintainer (zigbert) on what binaries are used - and we can probably package that for fatdog. Note: I dont use pwidgets myself.

Patriot has patched Conky and Xonclock to work properly on the Rox pinboard.
As jamesbond replies, the rest should be ok.

There exist newer Conky releases, but Pwidgets stick with the old because of size. (A newer release of Conky is used in the Pwidgets-extra package.) The package attached contains docs..... and could be stripped. I don't exactly know how the 'official' Pwidgets-conky is compiled - because I didn't do it. Pwidgets is far from an one-man-show......

Zigbert, you're too humble :) Your Puppy Stardust is in my collection, and although I seldom use it these days, it's one of the puppies I'll use to show off to others.

Here are the two executables for conky and xonclock. It's plain compile and packing. I tested them - they don't segfaults :D - but I don't use them, so I don't even know how to make a working package. Conky works, sort of (I get a black and white display). Xonclock seems to work but I can't see any clock at all? Perhaps because I don't run jwm?

Oh yes one more thing to note - by default, Fatdog runs openbox and lxpanel. This is different from the default puppy's jwm. I think I read somewhere that pwidgets depends on jwm? Fatdog does include jwm, but I think it's seldom used (I never use it) so it's not well tested.

hi everyone,

thanks for replying so fast! i'll be upfront here; i have no knowledge of how to write the necessary scripts/binaries or how to put together a package for this. i suppose that i was hoping this was going to be "easy".

i'm not really looking to give anyone a difficult time over this as i realise all of this takes time and effort - no one gets paid for this work after all!

fatdog64 is great and if i can't have any bling, well, no worries.

ta,
Ade

The execs posted by jamesbond work :) .

Basic instructions:
  • Install pwidgets
    run this

    Code: Select all

    rm -f /usr/local/bin/xonclock
    install the conky pet
    install the xonclock pet
run pwidgets from menu and enjoy your bling!
[/color]
(no need for this now, see edit)

One more binary needs to be converted to amd64, that is blendpics. I think it is by MU so the source will be somewhere  . It is needed for the sidebar functionality but pwidgets will run fine without the sidebar(s).
OLD INFO ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Cheers

EDIT: well I recompiled blendpics and resizepng, that's another one. You can easy google the source, they are both by MU. So now the sidebar works. I also stripped conky and xonclock, saved a few kb. Attached is the pwidgets_amd64-2.3.3 package.

ALL deps are now included and you just install and enjoy!
Also in the Fatdog repo and on main Pwidgets page 8)
