Wow, that sure sounds complicated. Seems like all I had to do was plug the various cords into my Zoom model 5590 ADSL modem / wireless G router and turn it on, then boot Puppy and use the "Connect" wizard. :) I probably did have to use SeaMonkey to configure the modem, and I remember having to install filters in order to use the phone.

All in all, I found getting an ADSL modem to work was a no-brainer. And when I called the phone company I was told they didn't support either the Zoom modem or any version of Linux. Which I find ironic, since AT&T invented Unix.

Flash,

That's you're whole problem, you didn't know how hard it was supposed to be.

The first DSL I did was sooo hard, I swore I'd not use the phone company for an ISP ever, not now and not ever.

A couple years later, a brother in another state said he was going to do DSL to save a couple bucks a month. I did what I could to stop his hard headness and help him learn from my error, but all to no avail.

All said and done, his phone company made DSL as easy as typical Cable ISPs.

What's to be learned? Different phone companies may approach things differently.

However, I did keep my promise, if anyone depends on me helping them with DSL I won't do it, general principles maybe. Plus the fact that in LA we do have choice between DSL and Cable.

And I don't like Microsoft exclusive ISPs, which my first phone company DSL experience was.

As far as this HOWTO is concerned. it's GPL licensed and the package could be downloaded and packed quite efficiently and hosted here for download and offline reading.

I think it should be, because one cannot count on another website not changing structures, removing pages or whatever and links going dead.

Well, it was last revised in 2002. Aren't pretty much all DSL modems being made these days configured through a browser page? So it would probably only be useful to someone with an old modem, which probably wouldn't work anyway because the phone company has changed its standards. :lol:

"2.2 Estimating System Capacity
As described in paragraph 2 above, your system will require about 2 Mbytes of memory and 2 Mhz of CPU per active termination. That is in addition to whatever memory and CPU Linux and the other software running on your server require. It is probably safe to assume that a 500 Mhz Pentium with 512 Mbytes of RAM will terminate about 250 concurrent connections."

Revision 0.5 - 4 Jan 2006

This HOWTO describes how to use Linux to build a PPPoE server.

http://www.dslmodemsdirect.com/DSL%20Co ... omeRun.htm

"This is a first to provide a solution for the entire house with no additional filters or wires needed. Of course the Filter Manufacturers won't be too thrilled. It is not good to have a ton of filters anyway, each one adds the equivalent of 700 feet to a line. The High Frequency DSL signal is only good for approximatey 18,000 feet from the ISP origination equipment so if you are say 15,000 feet away and you add 5 DSL Filters around your home (adding the equivalent of 3,500 feet of wire) you just made your signal just about useless."

Interesting.....

ROUTER MODE VS BRIDGE MODE
"This modem model is the first offered by Sympatico that can automatically authenticate (log in) to the service for you. When configured to do this, the modem is in router mode. By default, the modem comes to you configured in router mode.

This modem can also be configured in bridge mode. In bridge mode, the modem does not perform authentication. You need to configure your operating system to connect for you (through Access Manager, RASPPPoE, or Windows XP), or use a broadband router to perform the authentication duties. There is a button available from the modem configuration menu that will put the modem into bridged mode so it will function properly with your home router."

"3.1. Bridged vs PPPoX Networks

Before we get too far into the final stages of installing and configuring our system, let's look at how various DSL ISPs set up their networks. It will be very important for you to know how your ISP does this, as there is more than one possibility and the steps involved are quite different for each. This may not be the kind of thing the ISP is advertising, and since you are not using Windows, you may not have access to the setup disk that the ISP provides. If you're not sure, ask the ISP's tech support staff, or better, find other knowledgable users of the same service."

http://www.linux.com/base/ldp/howto/DSL ... ation.html

" The Homerun
" I would not use microfilters if I lived across the street from my CO. A splitter is the only way to go. "
--A retired BellSouth ADSL installer
The optimum method of wiring for the DSL modem is sometimes called a "homerun"."

http://www.linux.com/base/ldp/howto/DSL ... uning.html
Performance Tuning and Troubleshooting

A very rough guideline on what you might reasonably expect
as a maximum sync rate, based on distance from DSLAM/CO:

0-12 K ft (0-3.6 km) 2000 Kbps or more (8100 max for ADSL)
12-16 K ft (3.6-4.6 km) 1500 Kbps to 1000 Kbps
16-18 K ft (4.6-5.4 km) 1200 Kbps to 512 Kbps
18-?? K ft (5.4-?? km) 512 Kbps to 128 Kbps or less :(

"Other suggested kernel options for those who want to squeeze every last bit out of that copper (selected entries only):
# sysctl -a
net.ipv4.tcp_rfc1337 = 1
net.ipv4.ip_no_pmtu_disc = 0
net.ipv4.tcp_sack = 1
net.ipv4.tcp_fack = 1
net.ipv4.tcp_window_scaling = 1
net.ipv4.tcp_timestamps = 1
net.ipv4.tcp_ecn = 0"

"Interleaving

"Interleaving" is an error control mechanism of ADSL with DMT line encoding. DMT is now the standard for ADSL, and is by far and away the most prevalent form of ADSL. Interleaving buffers the raw data and corrects errors on the fly at the DSLAM. This can significantly help marginal loops that may be prone to line errors. The downside is that this buffering also adds significant latency to the connection. So for those with reasonable quality lines, interleaving is of no real benefit, and may actually add unnecessary latency.

Interleaving is an adjustable parameter and can be turned on or off by the telco. Many telcos seem to like to have this on by default, since it probably reduces tech support calls in those cases where it does help stabilize a line. But everyone else pays a price."

5.1.3. TCP Bottlenecks
5.1.4. Dropped PPP Connections
5.2.1. No sync
The modem sync LED has never been green.
5.2.2. Network Card (NIC) Problems
Symptoms here are: NIC is not recognized, modules won't load, or ifconfig shows the interface is not up, or is generating lots of errors, etc.
5.2.3. IP Connection Problems
5.3. Sync Problems
5.4. Network and Throughput Problems
5.4.1. Miscellaneous Network Problems
Some odds and ends:
Some Web pages won't load. For PPPoX users, the MTU value could be too high.
5.5. Measuring Throughput
