I notice at distrowatch that somebody over at Mepis has seen the light and made a lightweight version with Gnumeric, Abiword, fluxbox and Icewm.
Not like their (official) so-called "Mepis-lite" that simply replaced OOo with KOffice

Yes, Sage mentioned that to me earlier. AntiX apparently keeps all the kde libraries, in case anyone wants to load some kde application at some stage, so I suspect the OS is tending towards middleweight rather than lightweight altogether. Looks interesting though.
I can't help wondering if Xorg needs to be so big; its increasing size seems to be the unavoidable major limiting factor when endeavouring to create any beautifully light distribution. Xvesa is just too limited in itself when it comes to graphics speed and capability.
