Want to make a new distro, please help

#1 Post by Joydeep »

Dear Puppy developers,

Since long I was searching for a linux distro which have no problem with old hardware. There is DSL but I am not satisfied.
I am looking for a system which can at least provide a GUI not bloated but just useful.

I am happy that Puppy has the features which I have been searching for.
I am very much interested to make a distro based on my own concept. I am not in favor of a shiny Desktop oriented one but a little monster which will have all the packages which are required for my job and interest. That's why I like to know how Puppy works from an USB and how can I make such a Puppy like distro ?

Could any one please suggest ?

Welcome Joydeep to the puppy forums. :) I dunno what the alien is saying about spam, :? but I think something is bugging him :(..yet again.

Only thing I can figure is you left a link with your note & it's ok for alien to do that (visit the fringe) but not you. :(

I've not run puppy from usb but i'm sure more helpful info will be forthcoming from others. :) Easiest way to try out pup is burn a pup iso, boot the 'pute with the cd & see puppy run..

No doubt an ton of info will come up with a search in this forum of usb install. When searching, a word has to have at least 4 characters so if it doesn't you add * so for example usb* install

What type 'pute u have?

I took a look; I don't understand what it is that you want or need that you can't find now. More details? jf

sounds like a remaster.

@Joydeep. Easiest way to try out pup is to burn a pup iso http://www.puppylinux.org/user/downloads.php?cat_id=1 to cd, boot the pute with the cd & try it out (running live cd). Think your 'pute has 48 megs ram & could be a problem. If so, a swap partition might do the trick.

Thanks to all responders,

sorry for double posting :-(

I am interested to make a linux distro with stenographic tool, tools to rescue a damaged system, backup tools etc.... The best way I think is to make a distro which can start from usb stick and which can also run fast with old hardware too.

I have already checked a lot of different distro but all my dreams seem to become true with puppy. I am also interested to built a PIC microchip lab based on puppy.
I have found to build customized puppy with unleashed. More over micro puppy has cut down the xwindow by providing xvesa rather than x.org. I think micropuppy can be my staring point. I have also tried the 8MB puppy; the foundation of micro puppy but the download page is not accessible any more :-(

thanks a lot
