Gxset X settings : Bell : enable : "beep me up" doesn't make any sound.
When deleting from ROX-Filer, files are not moved to the trash ?

I saw one of Lobster's "inodes" messages, yesterday, when trying to upgrade from 2.14 to 3.01 on an Intel machine. It completely screwed up both X window options, too. Had to reinstall on an AMD board and transfer the HD. I despise everything about Intel - one of the devil's acolytes!

Printing trouble |
|
I had problems with printing in puppy 3.01.
I downloaded the pet package that Wolf PUP offered in this blog but I still got an error (foomatic-rip)
After creating the directory /usr/local/etc/foomatic I got output on my hp deskjet connected via an USB port.
I Hope it will help others too.

Batch file rename PET package Gprename does not work in puppy 3.01. It worked perfectly with puppy 2.14. This is from the command line:
# gprename
# Unknown error
Compilation failed in require at /usr/share/gprename/bin/gprename.pl line 16.
BEGIN failed--compilation aborted at /usr/share/gprename/bin/gprename.pl line 16
Anyone else having this problem?

Problem with CUPS 1.2.11 when trying to print to a printer on a Windows PC via Samba. It worked in 1.1.23, but the smbspool file or symlink is not included in /etc/cups/backend with 1.2.11 Adding it doesn't solve the problem.

Subject description: Problem with HP printer and usb port |
|
| Wolf Pup wrote: | | for anyone having trouble printing with their hp printer, try this, delete printer from cups, then remove hpijs-1.7, install the package below, restart puppy, test if the printer works |
My problem is more interesting....there is no pull down for either a USB printer or my HP Laser4 plus.
The print control in 2.17.1 works just fine.
I guess I could print to a pdf...save that to a ubs drive and reboot into widows or 2.17.1 ... but that doesn't seem to be an efficient solution.

For puppy 3.01 - scribus doesnt load at all
Ive de-installed it and re-install it several times but no go.
For Lobster's Shard.-
The following Icons are not on the menu (eg. scribus, dia diagram editor and art of illusion) also art of illusion needs java or it wont run needs to be downloaded.
For Pizzasgood NOP 3.01 it seems its based on 3.0 not 3.01?
Very good overall speed and easy to be used as a base pup.
Would like a version of this one with xvesa only for older junk.
All in all Im testing to be the main OS on my new compaq c700 I will not go back to windows ever but would like to run WINE if possible for some older PC apps.

CUPS printing malfunction with HPIJS driver Subject description: Test page prints as 4 stair-step lines, then "endless" page ejects. |
|
My HP DeskJet 5850 direct-networked printer worked perfectly with its hpijs driver prior to 3.01. But with 3.01, the test page (and other print attempts) prints a first page as four lines ending with a line-feed but no carriage return, forming a "stair-step". (Each line should start to the right of the previous line, below.) | Code: | %!PS-Adobe-3.0
%%LanguageLevel: 1
%%DocumentData: Clean7Bit
%%DocumentSuppliedResou |
I also tried the hpijs PPD version provided for the samba problem, but saw no difference. Then I tried the version from 3.00, with the same result. So it appears not to be a driver problem, but the effect of some change in the new CUPS or foomatic-rip.
Does anyone recognize this symptom?
Richard

Universal Installer + full HD + usb Subject description: no linux boot entry if usb flash drive plugged in during full install |
|
This one turned up during a session where I switched from a version of 3.01 to the original. With a USB flash drive in the USB port, I booted off the CD and did a full install to /dev/hda1, wiping a previous installation. After installing Grub to the MBR, I checked /boot/grub/menu.lst and found no entry for any linux. There was an entry for DOS on the flash drive, even though there was no system (of any kind) there. Rebooting, without the USB flash drive plugged in, I had no trouble with a full install to /dev/hda1, getting a correct menu.lst.
Have also seen the same weirdness others have seen with /dev/hda1 not shown as mounted, even though it was the boot drive .

Serious UnionFS bug |
|
The new unionfs has a serious bug. In the main puppy layer if there is a folder that is actually a link to a real folder and you install a pet package or even merge in an sfs file that has a file in that link folder the link folder is corrupted in your save file [frugal/pendrive install]. The link folder is no longer a link, but an empty folder - though when you try to delete the folder it wont, complaining it aint empty!
This could be the cause of some very strange behaviours.
Edit: Correction, only happens on a USB pendrive

NOP isn't mine. The only non-paid-for Puppies I've made are Empty Crust and the Pizzapup series.
(And for the record, Pizzapup 3.0 and 3.0.1 were based on Puppy 2.12 and 2.14, respectively. The version numbers were because they were the third iteration of Pizzapup.)

White out files |
|
I never completely understood white out files.I have a very well behaved 3.01 (live cd) with about 2000 of them. True, they are zero length, but I like to run a tight ship - are they needed? Well I'm sure not all of them, but what's an easy way to delete the unneeded ones?

Subject description: Frugal install with save to full partition, does not save |
|
I got a new computer with lots of memory (1024 megabytes) and 80 gigabyte drive. Install one of the many puppy installs, I did a frugal install to one of the partitions (Pup301 directory). I modified Grub to boot the frugal installation. It boots fine. However, when you shutdown, you are ask about saving the session. I have select save to the partition. It shutdowns. About reboot, Puppy 3.01 starts as no having any saved information. I have tried saving three times. It works fine if one saves to pupsave.2fs file. However, it will not work with the save to the partition. The partition, I am saving, has an ext2 file system. Checking one finds only partial information for root, none of the normal configuration files are present.
On booting, it appears the partition is not mounted. This may be the problem. This is the same problem that WhoDo reported in another forum.
