Dealing with problems on forum going forward ...

#1 Post by JohnMurga »

Hi,

See here for more information ...

http://www.puppyos.net/forum/azbb.php?1189171417;2

I will post an update to this thread by Sunday night, but basically the problems on the forum are down to 3 things :
  • phpBB session table corruption (fixable through a php page).
MySQL process crashing (currently requires system access).
Resource issues with the server (requires system reboot request with ISP).
Currently I deal with all these issues, so if I am away (as normally happens when there is a problem), the forum stays down until I find out and people get upset.

I will posting updates here on how I am going to try an mitigate this risk.

Cheers
JohnM

Comment on Barry's back-up site, as per your link.
Is there anything specific that mere mortals can do to help? Do you want an email every time things go screwy? During recent outages, Barry's site and blog have been used by myself and others to try to get an unobtrusive alert for your ultimate attention. Ask and it shall be given.

Wonder if this http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=23461 could be sorted out, or what the problem may be?

Sorry I am late :-)

I am rebuilding the search indexes with a different method, I hope that'll help with that problem and others (it may be due to MU's username being two characters long) ... The rebuild should be done in about 3 hours.

As far as the other issue, I have a test page that does a couple of checks and re-boot the db and server remotely. I will give some of the mods access to this once it is tested.

I will also give them a phone number to SMS in case of fatal error.

Cheers

Thx for the update. Not positive at this point (mem) but pretty sure that MU's posts could be searched before as described above. Given the number of his posts, wouldn't surprise me that something broke. :)

For me, any problems with the forum functioning pales in comparison to the chronic whining by a very few, with one theme or another.

Some thrive on making disparaging personal comments of others (or something..anything) which imo is silly & reflects mostly on the speaker(s) :) ..than anything else.
