Puppy 3.00-Roaring Penguin PPPoE ADSL [solved] |
|
I downloaded RP-PPPoE 3.8 from Roaring Penguin site, compiled and installed it in Puppy 3.00 and the problem with my ADSL internet connection in Puppy 3.00 is solved.
To patch your Puppy 3.00 just download and click the PET package attached to this post.

I was informed from a long time Puppy user that since Puppy 3.00 he had to specify DNS to properly configure Roaring Penguin. Well, in contrary, I’d always done that, so didn't noticed any difference.
This method always worked for me:
>Menu >Network >Roaring Penguin PPPoE ADSL
>New Connection
>Basic
Connection Name: MyInternetProviderName (Enter your Internet provider name.)
User Name: MyUserName (Enter your username.)
Password:****** (Enter your password.)
>NIC and DNS
Ethernet Interface: eth0
DNS Setup: Specify
Primary DNS: 193.189.160.13 (Enter DNS specified by your Internet provider.)
Secondary DNS: 193.189.160.23 (Enter DNS specified by your Internet provider.)
>Options
Allow use by non-root users: No
Use synchronous PPP: No
Firewalling: Stand-Alone

thank you very much, Leon!
i had never had to specify the primary and secondary DNS while setting up pppoe with simplePup and myPup, but that was the solution in this case with Puppy 3.0.

I've just released pup 3.01, with a blend of rp_pppoe from 2.17 and the new 3.8 executables. I can't recall exactly, but I think that the gui script had some mods done by a our puppy guys, whereas the pure 3.8 pet package has the official gui script.
Leon reports that 3.01 works, but you guys try it and let me know if it works as-is or you have to do things like reported above to get it to work.
The objective is whatever we learn here can be put into the package as defaults to make it easier for others in the future.

and a very worthy objective it is! anything that makes the initial Puppy experience simpler is good for Puppy and Linux. dispelling the idea of Linux and open source being difficult to use is a good thing. i had a rough idea of where to look for those DNS numbers, but that could've been a real hurdle for someone not used to poking around a little in their OS.
anyway, i'll try Puppy 3.01 as soon as possible and see what's what.

i downloaded puppy-3.01-seamonkey.iso, but still had to specify DNS in Roaring Penguin configuration in order to go online.

What I'm working toward is to not have the Roaring Penguin package in Puppy. PPPOE can still be achieved using the PPP package, and I want to build that support into the PupDial GUI -- it will be easier in the long-run for me to maintain.
For further details on this plan, see my Blog:
http://puppylinux.com/blog/?p=11
You don't need Dingo for this, any Puppy has the PPP package with the PPPOE plugin.
It would be great if someone who is into using PPPOE could take this on-board and figure out how to get it working. If we can determine the exact steps, from a terminal, then I can translate that into the PupDial GUI.

Barry,
Puppy size, speed and the fact how quick and simple was ADSL Internet connection setup using Roaring Penguin PPPoE compared to Windows tips and tricks was the most pleasant surprises when I started to use Linux two years ago. Roaring Penguin PPPoE also has its own firewall, one important thing not to worry about if the main Puppy firewall don't work as it's the case with Puppy 4 Alpha1 or if I forget to set it up before first starting my ADSL Internet connection.
I successfully compiled and installed rp-pppoe-3.8.tar.gz package in Puppy 4 Alpha1 and it works well.

I've setup my ADSL Internet connection using Roaring Penguin /usr/sbin/pppoe-setup/ script. You can find in it all the steps that could be translated into the PupDial GUI.
In my /root/.jwmrc-tray file I created two tray buttons to start and stop my ADSL Internet connection using Roaring Penguin /usr/sbin/pppoe-start and /usr/sbin/pppoe-stop script and that's all.
<TrayButton popup="pppoe-start" icon="pppoe-start.xpm">exec:pppoe-wrapper start MyAdslConnectionName</TrayButton>
<TrayButton popup="pppoe-stop" icon="pppoe-stop.xpm">exec:pppoe-wrapper stop MyAdslConnectionName</TrayButton>
I would suggest to keep Roaring Penguin PPPoE scripts in Dingo and add only PupDial GUI to setup Roaring Penguin PPPoE and its firewall and buttons to start and stop ADSL Internet connection.

Leon, your suggestion seems reasonable. I get the impression that most people who have been using Roaring Penguin have been using the commandline apps and not the 'tkpppoe' GUI app?
I've never used PPPOE before, so I guess it's about time I had a go.
