I was wondering if installing these drivers (nvidia-9643.pet) would be a wise thing to do.
Very wise
Will it fix my de-centered image problem?
Yes

Will I have a boost in performances?
Probably not noticeable unless playing 3D games . . .

Will I risk to screw up things?
Yes. Always . . . but the beauty of Puppy is being able to screw up and boot up again - that is run from CD afresh

use wNOP aka Wobbly NOP
http://puppylinux.org/wikka/PuppyNOP
- that is cutting edge but your card is supported . . . :)

Thanks a lot for your reply. :)

Wow, I just gave a look to Puppy NOP (with the link you gave me) and wow...very interesting.
Very nice graphics (it has implemented even compiz fusion!) and nice additions/changes.
I was just wondering if all those things will negatively affect my old system...the whole meaning of puppy was to give my old PC a new life, if I start using enhanced graphics it will use more ram and cpu I suppose. Am I wrong?

Installing 3d drivers will improve proformance for most any system... however you system might be too slow to run compiz... your graphics card is ok but your processor may be a little on the slow side...

you could try it out for kicks though... if it works please up load a video :-)
Taking Puppy Linux to the limit of perfection. meanwhile try "puppy pfix=duct_tape" kernel parem eater.

Hi All,
new card problem,
Had a nvidia Geforce2 MX 440 which I had running ok with the nvidia drivers. Now have updated to a nividia 6600GT.
Upon rebooting xorgwizard came up I selected my normal settings. Then nothing. Rebooting it says loading settings from xorg.conf for about 20 seconds then fails back to command promt.
I've tried lots of combinations of editing / deleting / copying from a new installation but still the same. I want to get this installation working again as its my main work one.

So can anybody tell me how to get back to default graphics or which files to delete to force a start again.

DC
P.S. xvesa does not work either

Thank you for these drivers. Not having them didn't effect Puppy too much, but this has made all the difference in the world for using Cedega.

NVIDIA-964301-k2.6.21.7.pet works for my NVidia GeForce 5200 FX [PCI ID 10DE:0322] thank you
I think I choose not to have it update my xorg.conf
I got dumped at the prompt
xwin
bzflag seems nice and quick with all the shinies turned on

I'm now trying to play flightgear I think I'm going to need a lot of practice

Tried installing nvidia-100.14.11.pet on a HP laptop, running 3.01...

Didn't work...got this in the log:

Using: nvidia-installer ncurses user interface
-> License accepted by command line option.
-> No precompiled kernel interface was found to match your kernel; this means
that the installer will need to compile a new kernel interface.
ERROR: Unable to find the development tool `cc` in your path; please make sure
that you have the package 'gcc' installed. If gcc is installed on your
system, then please check that `cc` is in your PATH.

Thought gcc is part of the package?? so any ideas?

TIA

the drivers in the .pet are precompiled so something is wrong... you should not be getting that message unless you were actually trying to rebuild the drivers from source

I'm having another problem with the drivers. I've got this old riva tnt2 on an old amdk6.

The drivers( NVIDIA-718601-k2 ) install ok, but when i try to restart the xserver, I get the nvidia logo, and when the wm (jwm) starts loading up, x freezes. I'm still able to move the mouse on the screen but that's about it. Nothing actualy loads up, not even the pinboard, just about half of the taskbar, without the tray. I can't exit x, or do anything because the keyboard and mouse clicks aren't working.

This happens only when I use the nvidia drivers. Right now i am using the nv drivers, xorgwizard reverts the "driver" in conf to these.

I'm by no means an expert, but don't 3.x and 4.x puppies use the same kernel? I think that means they can use the same driver package.

I have this current .pet running my 4.0 puppy and it DOES work for me. No more refresh lines in my movies anymore.

where to download a driver for puppy 4.0

#32 Post by lawrencelkl »

Hi people,

I am completely new to linux so please bear with me.
I just recently installed puppy 4 and then installed openFOAM, the open source cfd program.
when i launch the paraFoam (paraview) , a viewing postprocessing tool to view the results, i get msg in the console window

Xlib:mixing "GLX" extension in display "0.0"

is this the problem with display driver? honestly i dont know what display card i have but it is a acer travelmate 270.

please kindly help me with a instruction on wher to download and how to install the or perhaps before al lthis, how to determine my display card type.

your help is very very much appreciated.

thanks

Lawrence

Hi,

I'm new to puppy. I have a GeForce 6600 and downloaded the nvidia-100-xx files. I installed it using the pup installer.

I tried following further instructions, but I can't find "install_nvidia"

When I restarted xwin, I noticed Nvidia X Server Settings installed, but when I checked my Display settings, I noticed my OpenGL config is still unknown.

What am I missing?

Thanks

I think I got it working. I installed the xorg-dri packages from the package installer. I'm using Puppy 4.00.
