Nvidia drivers for Puppy 2.17 Sub_title: A litter of 3 drivers |
|
I have compiled up the full set of 3 Nvidia drivers and made them into pet packages for Puppy 2.17.
nvidia-7185.pet for ancient nvidia graphics cards (riva TNT to Geforce 1).
nvidia-9639.pet for most nvidia cards (officially Gf2 to Gf4 but have tested on Gf7 OK).
nvidia-100.14.11.pet for latest cards (Gf5 to Gf8).
All available at http://download.tuxfamily.org/nop/
To activate the drivers, if you have a functioning xorg setup either edit the /etc/X11/xorg.conf and change the driver from "nv" to "nvidia", or exit out of X and type nvidia-xconfig. If xorg wont work at all try renaming /usr/X11R7/lib/xorg/modules/drivers/nv_drv.so to onv_drv.so and then re-run the xorgwizard.

I tried this as I have a Geforce 4
(tried it in Tmxxine Shard based on Puppy 2.17.1)
I got into a muddle in which xorg would not restart. Rather than fiddle about any more, I set up Puppy again. As I run from CD this only takes 3 mins. I believe the problem was somewhere to do with running xorgwizard which set the vertical and horizontal refresh rates too high and did not seem to respond to my efforts to edit.
How are others getting on? With some testing this 3D option might be in 'Talking Stick', NOP and future Pups and puplets?
Many thanks

I tried installing both the 9639 and the 100.14.11 and could not get either to work with my 7600GS card. I tried all the suggestions but xorg would not load no matter what.

Hello all
I have a Toshiba Qosmio F10 laptop with a GeForce FX 5700 built in. The drivers from this post did not work and I can not run X after the install.
Same for my desktop (HP Media Center with a nvidia 7600GT) where I get the same result.
Any ideas when this will be fixed?
Thanks!

Nvidia Drivers Sub_title: Litter stillborn |

Oh dear ,
I guess it was too easy to expect it to work (compile drivers then package the files into a pet). There is obviously a trick to this - will have to do more research. Dont download the pet files until I figure out what is going on.

Eureka !! Nvidia drivers working Sub_title: Solved Nvidia Drivers and Puppy 2.17.1 |
|
Great news, I have fixed the Nvidia drivers problem for Puppy 2.17
Reading the Nvidia documentation for the driver "run" packages I found that you can add a kernerl driver to the package. So that is what I have done, compiled the new kernel drivers and added them into the packages to create custon run files for puppy 2.17. These have then been packaged into pet files.
When you install the pet files the nvidia run file is placed in /tmp with some files needed (ldconfig, ld etc) put in /root/my-applications. You must then drop out of X (ctrl-alt-backspace ) and run install_nvidia in the command line. Accept default answers to any questions by the nvidia installer. Then run xorgwizard. When you test a resolution you should see the nvidia splash screen. Then type xwin to get back into x windows.
Download from the Tuxfamily NOP repostory (see earlier in this post).

great news
should that be ctrl + alt + backspace?
Worked OK in Tmxxine Prism - so have added a link to this thread
http://tmxxine.com/Wikka/wikka.php?wakka=RainbowQuest
Prism has 3DCC (from EzPup) and I was able to confirm that Nvidia was working by downloading OpenGL and running the 3D demo. Using your drivers a more than 3 fold increase in FPS occurred
Any way you would recommend to test driver is working?
Also in the dialogue box during installation (minor point), it tells you to press ctrl + alt + delete. Some people may do this immediately - first you should press OK to complete driver installation
When I ran "xorgwizard" and did a successful test had to press ctrl + alt + backspace twice to get back to prompt and then able to run xwin . . .
You might also be interested in this post about open source Nvidia drivers . . .

Have you considered contributing or even developing Talking Stick?
Many thanks

Thanks a lot, it all went well.
BUT, then install program is install_nvidia. Not nvidia_install.
I'm happy happy happy.

Nvidia drivers Sub_title: Dont "drink and code" - you could lose your license |
|
Ah, fnuk
Alcohol induced dyslexia again ! Yes zigbert it should be install_nvidia and yes Lobster it should be ctrl-alt-backspace After the pet package has finished installation
Best way to test ? If you see the nvidia splash screen it should be OK. Running the nvidia-settings utility is also a good check - it should give lots of info on the GPU etc.
Lobster : As far as I can ascertain the open source drivers dont provide 3D acceleration, just 2D.

gray, the correct location for the nvidia kernel module is -
/lib/modules/2.6.21.5/kernel/drivers/video/
"depmod" then needs to be run to update the list of modules so Puppy can find it. You can add a "pinstall.sh" script to your petget which will run this command automatically at the end of the installation.
If the xorg.conf is not automatically configured by your script, or by the xorgwizard, you can refer to my old nvidia 3D instructions here -

Nvidia drivers and Depmod |

Tempestuous: Ah, so depmod was the trick I was missing earlier! I should have read the old posts
Never mind, the way I finally stumbled upon of adding the compiled kernel to the nvidia installation run package seems to work.
Thanks for the info though.
