Yes, please. You'll have time. We (the 3.xxCE development team) aren't in any crushing hurry to release at the moment. Anything you contribute will be much appreciated PG.
Pizzasgood wrote:But as far as understanding who's doing what projects with which versions, I've given up. I'd rather spend my energy figuring out my Japanese class than figuring out all the CE projects
Understandable, but not a problem. The 3.xx series project is being managed jointly by ttuuxxx and tronkel. It will become what it was meant to be. Heck, having time to get it right is a whole new experience for me, too. These guys know their stuff, but your help and the help of many others in the community will be important to its success. IMHO, Barry is testing the water again, to see if the community can manage the Puppy development cycle. We'll see. Next alpha will be 3.03 and all editions up to 3.09 will be community efforts, with Barry joining the team with fixes and advice when he returns from India. At least that's my understanding.

Cheers

Well, I know I've got time in that sense. What I meant is that I gave myself an ultimatum to get this stuff done by Sunday, and if I don't finish then just post what I have and cease thinking about it.

Things are looking good so far though. I only had one class today so I spent the rest of the time alternating between blowing my nose and working. Now I have the Syslinux/Isolinux stuff done now for 3.01 and 2.14, for both Pebble and non-Pebble setups. I'm debating now whether to bother doing it for 2.14R. It looks like the install script has been heavily modified so I think maybe I'll pass on that, and just post enough info that if Dougal and co. want to add it themselves they can (besides, they know their script much better than I do). The actual work isn't hard, it's just knowing where you need to put things that's a pain.

Yeah, that's what I'll do. I'm going to go add the finishing touches (info for using it with Unleashed, for example, and some more testing) and then post it. Then I'll call it quits for today. I'm not in the mood for mucking around in the 2.14 init scripts figuring out how to make Pebble survive pivot_root. I'll do that tomorrow when I'm feeling better.

On the plus side, porting to 3.02 won't have the issues of 2.14, because the basic infrastructure is the same. The main thing with that is going through the init scripts and modifying them again. Oh well. I'm getting good at it now

Well here is my 2 cents,

Forget about 2.14R unless Dougal and Pakt request a CE version...it's their baby.

3.01 is the new CE..period IMHO.

Stop promoting something that doesn't exist yet...it does no good to talk about a version that is in development and promote it.

Tronkel took 2.16 to a CE all by himself (as far as I know) and without very much input...and may I say it's a very nice CE with hotpup etc. I liked it so much so that I released it to my local historical society for testing.

So move on and enjoy the process...but leave the multiple CE's on the back burner.

Also keep the 3.01CE forum open to the public and restrict posts..I agree with Pizza..it's easier for the developers to talk without all the comments..but keep it open.

Too late. I already realized that the key parts of the 2.14R install scrip are still the same and just implemented the syslinux stuff.

A couple posts back I said "I don't even care anymore" and I don't, with respect to CE. But these are things that can be used for 2.14R itself, and the changes weren't hard. We're talking about giving USB users the chance to type in puppy pfix=ram just like live-cd users. This is about equality! :D

Wow, great work all. I just have a comment, and don't take this as a offense, more like constructive criticism, but the logo for "Phoenix CE" is kinda a eye sore. And no, I won't make a better one because I can't. But other than that, keep on trucking. I haven't been able to use Puppy as a main desktop OS yet, just because it seems a bit more chaotic than other distros, but I am a Ubuntu refugee just looking for something fast, working on my really new hardware, ect.

Okay Ecomoney, WhoDo. The sysliux/isolinux related stuff is done, for everybody.
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 777#172777
Well, done other than getting some good bug testing. My ultimatum doesn't extend to bug-fixing though, just the implementation. So no time constraints for that ;)

I'll get back to work on the Pebble aspect tomorrow.

That's great news, PG. Thanks for sticking with it, despite the head cold (?). Hope you feel a whole lot better soon, mate.

BTW, when I said "you'll have the time" earlier what I meant was any time you give to the project will be more than we could ask. I still don't see how you get so much done and still manage to get through your college program. That would take more energy than I can imagine ... and at my age imagining is pretty much all you've got left! :P

Thanks again for the efforts.

Init Script

#174 Post by ecomoney »

Hi Pizzasgood

thanks for the init script, there are some people building the base as we speak, I will make sure that it is included and is ready for testing.

Im not sure why there is all of this lack of support for 2.14r, it is stable tested and complete. It has all of the features from 3.xx (and its features, not libraries that matter). Its also a lot smaller and lighter than 3.xx series and has a lot more software and drivers available for it. Just because it has a 2 and not a 3 at the front doesnt mean its less advanced. Basically its a bigfixed 3.xx retro with a stable glibc (3.5, not 4.0..if were eveloping an operating system that "just works" we shouldnt be using anything with a zero in its version number!). Please download and try it and you will see for yourself

Dougal and Pakt are longstanding puppy developers with an excellent "pedigree". When I contacted them about using 2.14r as a base for a CE they were very supportive, and i was told they are happy to answer questions relating to it as part of a CE development.

Good news. Can we have more info, news and feedback? 8)
This community project is now called 'Phoenix'?
Is that right?
Are you able/willing to use the wiki? :)

Will Scruffy code be included? (I will not be developing it further
- it was very much a prototype)

You stated you will be working on this full time till it is done. Hooray! :)
What are you doing? What has been done?
Supportive users await direction :D

Thanks Lobster that is a fantastic logo

Ive made enough of my "newbness" when it comes to things technical, so will admit Im not the best person to work on the initial remastering. The wrok that needs to be done before the features (bootsplash, windows document folders etc) are added are

-Updated pdf viewer from 3 series
-Dillo to be replaced with skipstone
-Pfind and pburn updated versions added
-init code by Pizzasgood needs adding

There are 2 experienced developers who have agreed to prepare this, on top of the work already done by the venerable Tempestious/Pakt/Dougal. The latter have indicated they are currently adding a updated and more comprehensive driver pack, along with updated NTFS support. It would be nice to make the changes to this, but I have yet to hear back when this will be available. If those devleopers would like to progress in the meantime and build a first alpha, perhaps these updates can be added later)

Yes I will be updating the Wiki when I have chance. I still have users to support (and a few more charities that have joined the scheme) so I will of course have to split my time between these commitments, and oh...will have to earn a living as well :-)

I think Phoenix is agreed as a pretty good name, so I will be updating all of the TS3.03ce to reflect that, so as not to cause confusion with any projects based on the 3.xx series (actually I think this one is very 3.xx series as virtually all of the 3.xx series features have been backported).

Now what is the current state of development
with Lassie?
Do we have a Chihuahua (barebones 3.02Alpha1)

LETS COMPLICATE TOAST!

So there's to be a Talking Stick/Phoenix/TS3.02alpha1/2.14R1 and Talking Stick/Phoenix/Lassie/TS3.02alpha1/2.14R1 and Talking Stick/Phoenix/Chihuahua/TS3.02alpha1/2.14R1?

Then there will be Talking Stick/Phoenix/TS3.02alpha1/2.14R1-alpha# and Talking Stick/Phoenix/Lassie/TS3.02alpha1/2.14R1-alpha# and Talking Stick/Phoenix/Chihuahua/TS3.02alpha1/2.14R1-alpha#.

Then there will be Talking Stick/Phoenix/TS3.02alpha1/2.14R1-beta# and Talking Stick/Phoenix/Lassie/TS3.02alpha1/2.14R1-beta# and Talking Stick/Phoenix/Chihuahua/TS3.02alpha1/2.14R1-beta#.

Then there will be Talking Stick/Phoenix/TS3.02alpha1/2.14R1-RC# and Talking Stick/Phoenix/Lassie/TS3.02alpha1/2.14R1-RC# and Talking Stick/Phoenix/Chihuahua/TS3.02alpha1/2.14R1-RC#.

And ultimately Talking Stick/Phoenix/TS3.02alpha1/2.14R1-Final and Talking Stick/Phoenix/Lassie/TS3.02alpha1/2.14R1-Final and Talking Stick/Phoenix/Chihuahua/TS3.02alpha1/2.14R1-Final.

Yeah, it was just a cold. I rarely get sick nowadays. I don't even remember the last time I worshiped the porcelain god. It was at least seven years ago.

I did manage to get the bulk of what I wanted done with Pebble before my deadline, so that's not an issue anymore. I just need to scrounge up some time to add the finishing touches, package it, document it, and get it uploaded. Also, now it will automatically notice when there is no frame buffer and set the $NOSPLASH variable itself. Meaning when people leave off the vga=785 and forget to also add a pfix=nosplash option, it won't crash anymore. Good stuff. :)

ttuuxxx you're an oldie, too? ;)
I loved to play Phoenix as youngster in hollidays.
It made me really poor, cause you had to pay one Deutsche Mark for only some minutes of joy
There certainly will be an emulator-version available.
But I will not play that, meanwhile I prefer quake and such... unfortunately I have no more time to play.

Ups, sorry for offtopic...
