Wizard does not list my printer

#1 Post by gerry »

Can't find my printer, Canon i965, on the list in the printer setup wizard.
Puppy 2.16, USB port.

What to do?

I can't find anything on linuxprinting.org. what to do?

1) send an email to canon support asking if a driver/.ppd file is available, and if not, do they intend to release any.

2) buy a license from http://www.turboprint.de/english.html , or use their free version & put up with the turboprint logo on each page.

3) google for anybody using another canon driver successfully, or wait till somebody reverse engineers a driver.

4) buy a linux-friendly computer.

the problem isn't with linux in general, or puppy in particular, it's with manufacturers that release products with drivers only for windows.

Google "Canon i965 linux" got 33400 hits. I'm working my way through them.....

Actually, the free Turboprint looks easiest.

Else, look for an old printer to go with the old computer!

There are Canon drivers for this printer but they were issued in Japan only. In japan the printer was called PIXUS 965i. Check out this link...

http://lists.samba.org/archive/linux/20 ... 16750.html

and this one.....

I went through this on my Canon 560i. The problem is that with my 560 was the drivers were written around Redhat 9.0. I had to trace down some libs for rh 9.0 and load them in order to get them working.

Thanks. I downloaded the two Canon files suggested in one of those links (or was it a link off of one them) but then the recipe said I need libpng2.rpm.
The only versions that I can find are for Mandriva or ALTLinux. So I'm a bit stuck.

Canon printers, Turboprint

#7 Post by tday »

I got Turboprint and paid around $30 for the license 4 years ago to use my Canon i250 with Suse Linux. Still have it and it works fine with Puppy. At first it would lose the license when I rebooted, but the latest free upgrade fixed the problem. Hated to pay for a driver, but it does work well with many printers. I tried the free drivers - one from Japan and I think one from Austrailia - but didn't have any luck, and couldn't find a workaround to keep the logo from printing on the free Turboprint. At least money saved on the cheap ink for the i250 has paid for license.

The Canon drivers for the i250 were issued in New Zealand and The Aussies also got them. Go to their Canon sites to find them. I used the installation instructions from the i250 to get the Japanese i560 driver installed for my printer.
