Yesterday 2.17.1 (the final bug fixed Puppy "Dancer") was released
today I am happy to release my personal slant on it Smile

Much to my surprise I do not use OpenOffice very much
(Use Tmxxine Prism if you want that plus other programs)

I show how to add Open Office to Shard on the wiki
download one file and stick it in a directory (come on even Aunty No-Geek can manage that) Cool

Xara I use all the time for DTP and creating images and artwork
I Love it.
Too big for Puppy but I much prefer this to Inkscape
So that is in
I have been using it right back from when it was in Beta for Windows

I prefer Gimpshop to Gimp, as it has the Photoshop look and feel

I like the Icewm themes in Warrens Ezpup so added Ezpup. However I removed the backgrounds
as I tend to have my own preferences
and hope you have yours too . . .
I provide a few suggestions for backgrounds and adding them . . . again easy enough for Uncle Ethel and Aunty Bert to manage . . .
Even your pet mermaid could do it . . .

Kompozer I use for HTML, it is basically a tweaked and bug fixed NVU
I added java because web sites often require it
and finally adblock+ blocks the ads and Stumbleupon is fun when browsing. Stumbleupon is too much fun - sorry had to go in

So basically you have Icewm with three icons for xara, gimp and Komposer and the rest is all the latest Puppy

Tronkel (see below) has reminded that Ezup should be uninstalled if you are updating to Shard from a previous install

How Linux Tmxxine Shard was created

For this distro creation, I started with:

* Puppy2.17.1 which I booted from with the option puppy pfix=ram (on initial bootup)

Move or delete any other sfs save files

Now set up Puppy the way you want your new distro to be
I started with the latest Ezpup and rebooted
I changed the desktop background with MU's background changer
I changed the default home page that Seamonkey uses
I installed Xara, Kompozer and Gimpshop .pets (ensuring I deleted the .pets once finished)
I added adblock+ and Stumbleupon to Seamonkey
I ran Dougals remaster script from the menu and followed the smart option
created an ISO which I then burnt
I asked MU and Pkag to host the ISO and uploaded to their servers

I've just tried Tmxxine Shard.

Very smart appearance and 3 well-chosen extra apps - no need to be more complicated than this. Appearance puts many other distros to shame! I'll keep this as my main Puppy version. Looking forward to a version based on 2.18 when it arrives.

Minor problem with duplicate menu entries for XARA. Probably my messy pup_save though. Can I manually delete the duplicates?

I made the mistake of forgetting to uninstall a previous EZpup from my pup_save file. This of course clashed with the Shard deskop at first. I then uninstalled EZpup (takes a while) and then re-booted. Everything OK now.

Maybe a warning to this effect should be included in the forum announcement?

Nothing to to with Shard - Anyone noticed a problem with 2.17.1 not retaining ALSA configuration? Sound is only partialy working as well.

As I boot from CD I came across a serious bug Embarassed

When I save, the settings are not retained on the next boot and it boots into a pristine JWM without Icewm
and without the added programs

Crying or Very sad

At first I thought low memory on the HD - not that
typing ctrl + alt + backspace
and xwin (or xwin icewm) loads jwm and not icewm
- Icewm from Ezpup is only there on the first boot . . .

Not really sure where to start with fixing this.
I may have to go back to using Prism
