HP PSC 1610v works with Cups

#1 Post by mbutts »

I just got done getting my HP printer to work in 2.17. It wasn't that bad to get going. An added benefit was that the card reader worked too! Have not tried to tackle the scanner yet though. My Windows software is for 1400 1500 and 1600 series printers so maybe Cups will do all of them ok.

Has anyone done a "how to" for printer setup with Cups yet? If not, I would be able to for the group.

Did you have to install any other PPD file or driver package to get your printer going?

Hi Barry,
The first time I ran Cups, I had some problems understanding what to click on to set it up. I didn't think it had my drivers so I went to www.linuxprinting.org downloaded the proper PPD file and installed it in ~. It showed me a green confirmation screen that it found the driver. Then once I found the proper way to run Cups and I scrolled down to my printers drivers I noticed I had 2 identical listings. This told me it was already in the list. To confirm it worked out of the box, I rebooted and Puppy pfix=ram and ran Cups again without downloading any driver. It worked first time. The first time I got it to work I printed in 300 dpi, this time I did the 1200 dpi mode and it worked great... slow as expected and higher print quality.

I found that at this site:
http://hplip.sourceforge.net/
HP has come up with some software for Linux that will run 1169 printers and only excludes a handful. What was interesting is that many of the models can use scan, and even fax capabilities.
Here is just one of the screens that they have:
http://hplip.sourceforge.net/images/scr ... pplies.png

I have not tried it yet since I can not finish downloading the software. I am on Alltel cellular and on some downloads they stop the transfer of the file before it is done. I guess they don't want you file sharing or streaming. I'll have to go find a WIFI signal down the street to finish the download.

They also list dependencies needed at the website. To be honest I'm pretty impressed at what I saw HP has done. I wish more printer manufacturers would do the same to support their hardware.
Maybe you guys are already aware of this driver package. I didn't look too much on the search threads to see if it was. If not I can give an update how it goes with the software and if I can get scanning to work or not. I think that would be a big step for some people to be able to use scan on Puppy. Keep up the super job with what you are doing and I'll try to contribute more as I gain a better understanding of Linux. You have created a masterful version of Linux that many of us enjoy using.

I'm still using 2.15 CE some there may have been some changes made that I don't know about. But when I set up my PSC 1410 I was able to get printing to work with the HPOJ driver included in the cups package. However to get scanning to work required HPLIP which I installed using a modified tarball from Slackware, I don't have all the functions I should though (toolbox etc don't work). Every now and then I have another go at compiling the HPLIP package from source with out success. (If someone more capable than myself would like to compile HPLIP feel free as it would be greatly appreciated by quite a few of us.)

This link should help to get scanning working

Also do a search of the forum with HPLIP as the keyword.

Good luck

Ok tnx Billwho,
I looked at the link and it looks like it might be a challenge. When I read the stuff at the HP HPLIP site I got thrilled to see that they were supporting scanning and for the list of working printers it said mine would do scanning so I have hope. I guess if we can get it to work then the next thing to do would be to make it into a pet or pup to share with everyone else. I'll do some reading and attempt to compile as i have time this week. I forget if I'm using 2.17 or an alpha or beta but maybe it will work. I have not used 2.15 in a while and am not sure if there is any differences.

I did manage to download the HPLIP software now all I need to do is download all the dependencies. I'll try to start this morning and see how it goes. Check back!

tgz2pet

#6 Post by Billwho? »

I stumbled onto this reference about an app for converting tgz files to .pet format last night . Don't know if it will allow us to use the Slackware HPLIP package and get full functionality or not but it may be worth a try. Up till now whenever I wanted to install a package from Slackware I would untar it delete the install directory then retar what was left before installing as an alien package .
