Good news from the Google folks! Now they have a simple presentation app in their Google Docs and Spread. Thinkfree.org has always had that, but it requires java for some functionality. I will be testing the Google Presentation app and see what happens. I would really like to keep away from java and leave it as a d/l it only if you need it.

I'm having the same problem...must be a server issue. As far as I know that is the only place that it is currently hosted. MU may be able to shed some light on why the d/l is not working properly. He very graciously hosts a lot of our puplets.

myPup is a great idea

#38 Post by simes »

I think myPup is a great idea. In a world where more and more people have 'always on' internet access, using Web 2.0 applications will become more popular with time. When people realise that they can continue to use old PC hardware and still get modern function, operating systems such as Puppy will take off and the myPup derivative looks to be a clever idea which fits the original Puppy concept.

So even though my hardware isn't that old I installed myPup for fun. However I've not been able to test it because I cannot get it to recognise my ethernet card. In fact I have tried two cards and neither is recognised. I know which drivers to use but Puppy will not load them. In another partition I run Puppy 2.16 and that loads the drivers reliably. I wonder whether you have accidentally removed a module which is needed to make device detection work. Or, if anyone can suggest what I have done wrong, please say!

I would certainly encourage you to continue developing myPup as and when you get the opportunity.

I will check out the wired connection and see if it works OK. I may very well have messed something up. Thanks for checking out myPup! Please add any comments or suggestions for improvement as you play with myPup.

Thanks again,

myPup: an idea whose time has come

#40 Post by macadavy »

Thanks for myPup. I think its an idea whose time has come, or at least is coming shortly.
One way might be to start building it from a stripped-down Pup like Hairy Will's FatFreePup or Raffy's SafePup. The facility to choose our own 'webtop' providers would be the most flexible option, I think. Link lists like the ones Lobster has developed or that klu9 pointed to and/or this link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Ri ... plications for example, could be included as bookmark links for users to explore. There's a bewildering variety available these days - perhaps its best to let each choose their own. Generally if the hoster is geographically closer to the end user the appy will be faster.
Remember that Firefox is near-infinitely extensible with extensions & plug ins. For example there are mplayer and gxine plug ins for streaming multimedia. While adding extensions (e.g. ForcastFox, etc.) is trivial, I'm one who's always found it difficult to install plug ins correctly. (I'm such a n00b!)
A Firefox with pre-installed plug-ins for Flash9, mplayer & gxine, and some sort of n00b-proof installer for bigger plug ins like Jave JRE and Adobe PDF Reader would be really useful while keeping initial size down. And there are even faster, stripped-down browsers like Swiftweasel: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swiftweasel that are 100% Firefox compatible and can use FF extensions & plugins.
Regarding adding stuff to the menu, etc. most newer DotPups automagically add the <name>.desktop file needed by XDG when installing, so there must be someway to incorporate this to do it for new online apps users might want to add. I'd leave off automatically creating desktop icons or you might soon have wall-to-wall clutter that defeats the purpose of quick'n'easy access to a given application.
Regarding the matter of opening a browser without menus: do you mean opening it full screen? This would have the effect of making the webtop app appear to be running in its own window, as it were. It must be easy to configure Firefox to open full screen by default, no?
Finally, it might be useful to add on line storage options (e.g. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File_hosting_service ) and even web desktop systems like DesktopOnDemand: https://desktopondemand.com/
HTH and keep up the good work! :D

I haven't really looked at them yet, but www.zoho.com seems to have some nice webapps, about a dozen of them from word processor, spreadsheet, database through to planner, chat & mail.

It might only be the word processor at this time but they have a feature that might be unique where you can keep editing the 25 most recent documents while offline. Very handy when you are out of range or have to disconnect for some reason. Ironically it does this through Google 'Gears' that hasn't yet been implemented in Google Apps.

I'm sort of interested in webapps but am cautious for a couple of reasons, first is as more sites fire up I can foresee a dogs breakfast where people have to try and reconcile/combine data and documents held on multiple sites, second obviously is when we get dependent on them suddenly the ads and charges will appear.

Seeing this thread bumped back up here reminds me that I need to get back to work on a new myPup :-/ It seems as though the folks at gOS have a very similar idea, but based it on Ubuntu so it is much larger. I wonder if the Everex computers from Wal-Mart would work even faster with a Puppy-based distro rather than gOS.

Rhino

I got the ISO, made a cd and run it as pfix=ram. The hard drive of this system has puppy 2.17 and when I saw your mypup I had to try it.

Only problem so far is it dont see any of the 6 USB memory sticks, but 2.17 on the hard drive sees them all????
What am I doing wrong???? USB is very important to me because I would like to put this on a system where all is USB, keyboard, mouse, floppy, ect.

Like the forum says, its like gOS linux but way smaller.
I like the radio stations and audio section. The TV section says to be added?
Retired from GM, a Etech on engine electronics
Like to play with older computers and TVs

@earlytv: I had the same problems with My pup 2.16. This is one of the versions I loved when I started. And this is where I got the idea of wbar for Macpup from. Maybe there is an easy fix for the USB drives not being seen.
