Correct me if I'm wrong but Mr. Barry Kauler, established the "Puppy Linux Project" in January 2003, as a collaborative effort not a monolithic corporation.

With that in mind, maybe arguing about and trying select a single logo to represent all of the parts of that collaborative effort in all possible contexts, is the wrong way of looking at things.

well my conclusion all the new ones just don't work for me, I just like the old one with the flower in his mouth, he looks like a happy puppy, not a vector puppy, or an ugly white MU puppy, that breed of dog is noisy and all you want to do is kick it to shut it up. I think they should keep the one I talked about or go corporate with letters and or a logo not dog related but graphical.
Oh one last point on my website the one puppy icewm start menu button that I've made has been downloaded over 5000 times and its the one with the dog with the yellow rose, but that image has the rose removed. Just an idea. www.ttuuxxx.com

While Beneaton has a point that Puppy is "a collaborative effort not a monolithic corporation", I still think that a distinct logo would be valuable; if you as an individual don't feel like using the logo, then fine, nobody's forcing you.

That said, I think that making a logo that is too cartoony/detailed is a mistake. It makes it so that it's not as easily customized, and when it's made smaller (like for the Start menu) it's less recognizable. Windows and Macintosh both use logos that are stylized, easily customized, and still easily recognized when shrunk. I think rastapax's logo fits these criteria the best. Sure, it might be hard to see against a black background, but it takes seconds to colour it white (or whatever colour you like) so it's bright and easy to see against any background. Vincent, while a good runner up, doesn't customize so easily while still looking good.

Long story short, I like rastapax's logo the most.

As far as making a special logo for Puppy 3.0 Fire Hydrant... I direct attention to Apple's use of logos on OSX. There's OSX Jaguar, OSX Panther, OSX Leopard... But they don't make a completely new logo every time they release a new OS, because that would confuse everybody. They just modify their existing logo and it looks great while still being easy to figure out. Jaguar used the Apple logo with a spotted design on it. Panther used the Apple logo in glossy black, etc.

So taking this into account, we could do something like this for the Fire Hydrant logo (I'm sure anyone else could do it better; I don't claim to have any ability in graphic design):

HI,

Taking a look to all 15 pages in this thread, I can see all the time and effort shown here..

I think the "rastapax" original is very difficult to be improved... that's a good logo for an OS. Any try to make it look better ("3d" effects, "glares" effects) doesn't add anything to the logo. Only make it more difficult to read, or to print or reproduce in different systems.

The original one would work even in a Xerox copy or a Fax....

A vote for "rastapax" original.

there are poll results listed at the top of this page- where do i actually cast my vote?

thanks,

Voting duration is set when the poll is created. If you don't see poll buttons, then the poll must be over. Anyway, adding your comment here will still be useful.

Ok, I think we've had sufficient input to see a clear winner in the logo stakes. With almost 70 percent of the vote overall, Rastapax' original logo "wins" paws-down.

Now, based on that original logo, I'd like to see some suggestions for a default color scheme. We can assume JWM 2.0 will be the default window manager, unless Barry suddenly changes his mind about that, so we need a striking JWM theme to match.

All ideas considered, but our graphics specialists involved with the web development project will take away from that what best suits the overall look-and-feel of the new web presence.

We're back, enthusiastic and itching to get a new presence up by Easter!

WhoDo, that rasterpax snapshot has three logos side-by-side. Do you have the links to the individual logos, in each color? And I presume the individual logos would be be without the reflection? Or with it?

I would suggest (it really does grow on you and is high energy like Puppy) the citrus cut theme used in 3.02 and Dingo by default + a button arrangement (CSS + javascript or php perhaps) based on the theme changer in Puppy which allows you to change the theme colouring 8)
Puppy Raspup 8.2Final 8)

Is this the one you mean?

Just thought I'd finally register here and put in my (probably very tiny) vote for this 3 image combo too. Keeping the reflection wherever possible would be a nice differentiation from other such icons too. If the page author is familiar with PNG alpha, could even have a nice blend on non-white backgrounds too.

If this ends up being selected (or is it already, I know his is a rather old thread?), could I ask for the same image but with a bit more contrast for a Puppy LightScribe template? Here's what I'm currently burning my various ISO images onto...

Barry, we only have the original image uploaded to the gallery by rasterpax. OTOH, I can easily cut it down to separate images and remove the reflections, no problem. The reflections are not part of the logo as I understand it.

My understanding is that the logo itself is really the stylised puppy face, independent of the background, plus the text if we wish as rasterpax supplied that separately on his original image. The simpler the better IMHO.

This has been chosen by the community as its preferred logo for Puppy, subject to Barry's approval of course. As long as the logo is used in accordance with Barry's conditions, I see no problem in uploading a copy in raw black & white.

Here are the individual images supplied by rastapax, including an extra one supplied in response to some suggestions in the thread. The basic logo divorced from its background could be recoloured to suit the particular use. Obviously it would be no good in black on a black menu button, for example.
