Back in 2003 I helped a musician friend set up a music/midi recording system under Linux, and according to every link we found on the web it was essential to use ALSA. OSS was simply not up to the task of advanced audio production, particularly in the area of low-latency.
Unless OSS has undergone significant changes since then, ALSA is superior technology.

hi tempestuous
Apparently OSS 4.0 is a complete rewrite.
For a couple of minutes read about ALSA/OSS , try this from the author of OSS 4.0

Woo thats a challenge..this little puppy is still in training so this would be a big ask but hey Id like to give it a go.
If time permits probably try this weekend coming...
First issue that comes to mind...will alsa co-exist with OSS, leaving the apps to be able to choose which sound drivers to use.

Well I couldn't resist having a quick go...bad move
I tried the quick way by installing a deb package with the deb installer pet
unfortunately had an error on step 5..now I have no sound at all ...I guess thats what you get for jumping in..
The only good note is that enough was installed for me to run the ossxmix mixer which duly showed it had detected the correct sound card. cmedia .
So now I feel another rebuild on the way, and next time I will use a tar install.

OSS 4.1 works great
No MIDI support yet, but you get a noticable improvement in sound quality and lower audio latency.
OSS 4.1 has a built-in high-quality software mixer and works with JACK.
To compile OSS4.x, you must have the DEVX and kernel-src SFS files for compiling.
Download the source from here:
http://www.4front-tech.com/developer/so ... table/gpl/
compile and install.
WARNING: If you install OSS 4.1,ALSA won't function anymore (it replaces the ALSA drivers).
OSS 4.2 .PET package coming soon (for Puppy Studio)
