In both iOS and Android, apps use the built-in DB, directly or unknowingly. Its easy to find its name.

Thanks for reminding us, Colonel Panic.

I noticed on the portabase site a "call for templates", so to speak. However I
could not find any portabase templates on the site. Would anyone know
where to find some? It'd make life easier for a few people, no doubt.

Thanks in advance. BFN.
About portabase: heads up! I had to un-install it on my LibrePup because its Qt libraries prevented vlc and qupzilla from launching.
Sorry to hear it. I'm sure there's a way round that, but I don't know enough about Linux's file structure to be able to come up with it (something I hope to change soon). Could you install two versions of Qt in different locations, for example?

Hi, Colonel_Panic.

I'll try installing only the portabase executable and see what happens.
LibrePup already has some Qt aupport, so maybe no extra Qt libs are
needed. I'll let you know.

Don't be sorry, Colonel! :)

Yep. Works! The Qt libs are not needed for portabase to work in
Librepup-6.0.2.2 since it already has them.

Here's a portabase package without any Qt libs that I made back in March
2013 from the git repo.

Enjoy!

@tlchost and @amigo - you both must have missed the elephant in the room. The ELEPHANT!

He, He, I *did* think of EDB -Elephant Data Base, but when I googled it, I got no results. Hey, maybe it's supposed to be Big Elephant Data base... probably more scalable than the original, hence the name.

If you like African animals: http://www.elephantdatabase.org/ :D
There's also: dbelephant, who sells DB converters.

Elephants are known for their fabulous memory. What DB do THEY use?! ;)

I did write some functions in shell script way back in the day to use the filesystem as a database (that's essentially what a filesystem is anyhow)
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=86146
They should be compatible with gtkdialog if anyone wants to put a frontend to it... though the sqlite3 shell interface would pretty easy too.
Check out my github repositories. I may eventually get around to updating my blogspot.

That reminds me of this video: the importance of going web-scale.

musher0; Glad it worked out in the end. I'll give that Portabase package a try.

don't kick Musher's bucket please, try them ! (database)

#193 Post by Pelo »

something sure : a DataBase needs... Data.
What is painful to fulfill :)
I retired from office with some files, about industrial means. they are mine and top secret. Musher0 still has in the bucket nice DBase,
don't kick his bucket please, try them !
Symphytum is really a nice one, about medecines, and Medintux too. Some VIP's say 'puppy is weak and ill', that's not true, but in spite of puppy is healthy, try these two Qt apps, really nice.
Gramps is a nice Database too, but using it for people alive would be an offense.
Datacrow is a database for leasure, and upload data from the web. But VIP' in Puppy Forum don't show a great interest in it, because they have no time to play, their Puppies always seem having something wrong.

I see... pelo would like someone to kick my bucket so I won't be
offended when he'll input my name in the Gramps database.

That's very polite of you, pelo. It's very funny too, in a dark humor
kind of way. :(

Arghh, database lovers!!! :D

Musher0, don't worry, be happy ! Datacrow will fullfill quickly all you need. You have only to search anything ... at least known a little bit. Even Puppy Linux gives a lot of results.. Surprising, and Impressive
No need to type on the keyboard

'It’s 300 grueling miles of ice, snow and danger. For Will Rollins, his best friend Elias, and Will’s savvy lead dog, Blackie, this is the race of a lifetime. But with the $1000 entry fee, can they even get in? Can the locals compete against world-class international racers? And what about Becky Silas? She’s a tough competitor. But are the boys ready for trail life with a girl? And as if the race isn’t risky enough, there’s someone deliberately sabotaging sleds and gear, endangering all. When the temperature falls, the wind rises, and danger prowls the long trail, the friend who has your back had better be a good one!'

I still consider OSMO as a DataBase

#197 Post by Pelo »

I still consider OSMO as a DataBase, you just have to change colums names in file .mo
Export to csv format, your data can be imported by all the systems (including Dbase).
What people omit to say, we are speaking of DATABASE .... management
A table is like a spreadsheet.
MS Access, for instance, pick up some colums in several database to make a report, one column must be common.
By experience i can tell you that when you must create the report form, 90% of MS access lovers change their opinion. Too much work. for an ugly result.

I have been working for six years with Dbase II for managing seals, unions, and others peanuts allocated in 250 line stations in the world. If i Tell you Osmo can do it, believe me :!:
OSMO only miss a column in tasks common with contacts
Who is in charge of task ?
Linux makes no difference if contact is an human, an object or a speedy Puppy Linux (without Libre Office to trail)
350 USD is cheap, isn't it ? :)

Kexi will import the csv files created by Osmo without trouble. That is Nice, only with existing applications in Puppy Linux (KDE 1.6.3 is only 47MB )

Rename the columns (caution save your data, because structure change will erase them) . reimport data when 'birthday' has been changed to 'Acquired on'
