Hi rockedge.

Nice success story!

Yeah, although DOSBox was initially meant to keep old DOS games running,
it's doing a great job with the more serious stuff, too.

Not trying to hijack the thread...but it seems there may be some folks on the forum that are old enough to remember a CP/M then DOS based flat file database called DataStar(InfoStar) made by MicroPro(The WordStar folks).

There was a 16 bit DOS version that should run under DOS-BOX, and you can do a lot with the application....If anyone has it, I'd love to experiment with it under DOS-Box in Puppy.

Even better, throw together a nice bash program which would do the same...

Hi tichost!

I don't know about your DataStar/InfoStar, but DataPerfect is still
available! :) (And I still can't understand any of it!) :(

Hello all.

Here is the basic structure of a CLI database that uses awk. (Run < dos2unix > on
it first, otherwise you'll get errors.) It's to tally students' results, but it can be developed
into any kind of database -- if one has the talent for it.

And look more closely, people, your Puppy already has three DB programs included:

1) gnumeric -- use it to create a 2D sorted list of anything, with as many fields
as you like. You don't need to use a spreadsheet only to do calculations, you know.

2) notecase -- you can create a template for say, a daily organizer with various
hours of the day and perhaps a theme for the day and some comments at the
end of the day, and clone it as "children" for other days.

Both of the above could be used to create templates to inventory collections of any
kind: CD's. movies, books, tools in your shed, flower seeds for your garden, etc.

(Don't forget to save your templates,eh?)

3) For a names and address database, of course, osmo already has one (as
well as seamonkey, if your Puppy comes with the seamonkey browser).

I hope the above will help you with your databasing needs.

Databases are really not a success in Puppy. The reason is not the bad quality of the proposed database, but that the forum has no interest, that is not their cup of tea :)
I gave up.
I have just a few ones for personal usage, managing my devices as Pendrives and pupsaves inside, and managing my ISO files.
Gnumeric can do everything, Osmo, sqlitemanager, symphytum make database too, in a more complicated way, as MSaccess by Microsoft.

All my life, at the office, i fulfilled databases, where i wrote the work done on everything : aircraft, machines, screws, paints, and time spent doing that. But i had the boss surveying me... and paying my wages.
In Puppy, nobody will pay me for that.

Hey, pelo,

Let's go and have a beer together! :D
We'll weep over the lack of interest for databases from our fellow Puppyists!
We know how powerful and useful DB's can be. They don't! We are the wise ones! ;)

Cheers, my friend, cheers!

Image

Then we'll flex our elbows and start a beer database! :D

You two have not cornered the market on databases....I'm one who really likes them...and fondly remember beta testing dBase III and IV....and then compiling applications with Clipper.

Some of the stuff I did is still in use by non-progressive, luddite business folks.

Hi tichost.

Sorry if I ruffled your feathers. I just wanted to stir up things a little. No harm intended.

So, do you think you could come up with a little DB for Puppy? At least a suggestion?

None taken....it's actually nice to see others interested in database stuff

I'd look for things that work under wine and/or DosBox....that would allow use under both Puppy and Windows.

Musher0 there is a special Database for brewing beer in the PPM, a really serious one, for real brewers.(brewtarget)
http://www.homebrewtalk.com/brew-setups ... co-64.html : the man compiled the database in Ubuntu.
If people don't use available databases, why loose time searching others.

Nevertheless, Canadian friends, it will not prevent us from drinking to our health!

Dbase II : 1985 on a Logabax offered by the boss. I was fond of DBase, and experienced. We were consumable kits for line stations including o'ring, seals, etc... taking account of Military standards, Bac standards (Boeing aircraft). And to survey life time of these consumable all over the world..
And without bragging, i was famous database manager, perhaps the best in my airline. I could have been of some help here. But PUPPY's surgeons discourage me.
:) The only harware i found to enter in a database with Puppy was my pendrives.

I guess databases have an image problem. A lot of people think databases
are boring and for bureaucrats only.

Unless of course, it's always possible that Joe and Joanne Public (the
general public) like being disorganized! :D

Just a thought. BFN.

Hello all.

Here is probably one of the best names and addresses database ever:
http://www.tranglos.com/free/phonedeck.html
A bit old, lacks incorporation of pictures, but still very good.

On the download page, don't forget the import-export module and
the language pack -- if you need them.

The tool to use if you have to do regular follow-ups with your
business or community contacts, IMO.

You need wine installed, though. I never had a problem
with it running under wine.

The grey-ish screenshots on the author's site are ugly. Phonedeck
will look much better than that if you have themed your wine.
( Here is another explanation of how to theme wine. )

Hello all.

I found an interesting "fields.awk" script through ask.com:
http://www.ask.com/youtube?q=fields.awk ... archTopBox
and I thought I'd share the discovery. It is a simple universal flat file database. You
request a copy by e-mailing the author, Ian R. Forsyth. (His e-mail address appears in
the intro of the video.)

Judging from the video, you can adapt it to any collection (photographs, etc.) or follow-
up situation (car maintenance, etc.). The video explains quite nicely how to work with it.

Many have bugs, they are still free of charge

#168 Post by Pelo »

i took a glance at awk videos. The guy speaks slowly enough to make me understand what he means.
What i want to underline, is that to judge a photo editor software, you must at least got one picture to work on it.
A database as for instance open concerto, you must at least enter one employee and give him existence to know if database works, only one ! That is not done...
Same for Laurux.. or GNUcash... How can you judge if a database has no bugs.
Many have bugs, that's the reason why they are still free of charge.
One serious guy is jopervasco from french forum. Beyond words, he acts.
SQLiteStudio last version is a real database, and Puppy can go with. Waiting for some customers... Really Windows users are more reliable, some even pay euros for using databases.

A csv file is needed. Create it with Osmo, then, export it to your real database.

Hi pelo.

As for me, I find OpenConcerto, Laurux, & Company, "overkill" for my
needs. I see no point in spending more time keeping the database up-to-
date than doing my actual job.

But you did work in very large concerns, and that's your frame of
reference. That's fine, but please do not think that all businesses need
BIG databases.

Thanks for your understanding.

Hello again all.

Regarding the fields.awk post above, here's a *.pet archive containing it.

This archive contains, in addition to the script, a launcher and a *.desktop
file, plus an icon that I've derived from one of Ian's illustrations. Those
don't make a "GUI" per se, but they do make launching the script from a
menu easier. A "lazy" user won't have to open a console and then launch
the database script, (s)he'll just click on the menu item to open it.

Depending on the categories activated in your Puppy, after installation,
you'll find the menu entry for the fields.awk script available either under
the "Personal" or the "Business" sub-menu.

I am joining a screen capture of the result. As you'll see I took the liberty
of adding a grey border and of using the DejaVuSansMono font, which is
already included in all Puppy distros, I believe (this way it doesn't weigh
down the *.pet archive any more than it needs to).

The *.pet also contains the author's permission to publish his script here,
under /usr/share/doc/fields.awk-1/. There is a short help panel available
by typing 'H' in the menu. If you need more, please remember to refer
to Ian's youtube video.

Finally, the jpg's at /usr/share/doc/fields.awk-1/ contain, near the top, Db
structures for receipts and car maintenance. You can recreate them and/or
use them as templates for other Db's.

Enjoy!

PS. I would be remiss not to mention that Ian R. Forsyth's attached
fields.awk script is licensed under GPL.

Forsyth's bash/awk DB script as I received it from him by e-mail Nov. 28, 2015.
