How to automatically boot Puppy from CD with acpi=off?

#1 Post by heinz57 »

I installed Puppy to the hard drive on a machine I no longer use, and wanted to boot it with a floppy but that did not work for some reason. So instead of using the hard drive Puppy I intend to run it off a reburned CD and store data on the hard drive.

But ... the only way I can boot up from the CD is to use the suggested command: puppy acpi=off.

I intend to give this computer to someone who is not going to be able or willing to do that.

So I wonder if there is a way to build that acpi=off choice into a reburned Puppy that I could make. Or, maybe someone in the community has a Puppy derivative that includes that setting along with some others?

You don't say which version of puppy you are using. There is a program called isomaster that makes it fairly easy to edit the CD image to include your change. It should be on the multimedia menu.

Using ISOMaster open your iso and extract the file isolinux.cfg.
Now hit remove to remove it from the iso
Leave ISOMaster open
Navigate to the directory where you extracted the file and open it for editing.
On the kernel line add in "acpi=off" not in quotes and save the file.
Back in ISOMaster add the edited isolinuc.cfg back into the iso
Now save the iso
now use Burniso2cd to burn the new iso to CD
voila

There are ways to install Puppy to the hard drive and have it boot from the hard drive. As I read it, you intended something along those lines when you started.

Then you resolved to being satisfied with a boot from CD disc without having to type parameters.

Will answered your question. There is no other practical answer to your question I'm aware of, I think you or a moderator should mark this post as solved.

HairyWill, thanks for that how-to. It looks useful enough to put it in the Beginners sticky index. :)

I hope it works :) I don't have an optical drive.
