Rox Filer 2.2.0 |
|
Rox Filer 2.2.0
the latest version is 2.3, but i had some dependency problems with it
this replaces Puppy's rox with rox 2.2.0
there will be a roxapp icon in my-roxapps
do not move the icon from the my-roxapps dir
right click the icon for Help or to Uninstall
requires about 2.5 megs of space
(requires 4.5 megs with the language files)
screenshot ... the most recently modifed files/folders have bold print
screenshot ... bookmarks ... notice the antialised text
screenshot ... properties box lets you set the permissions easily
screenshot ... languages work even when locales doesn't

[edit: Aug 18, 2005 - version 0.0.2
- fixed pupget registration
- installer edits -o option in xinitrc
- symlinked shared-mime-info so rox will run as spot]
[edit: Aug 25, 2005 - version 0.0.3
- put languages in a separate dotpup
- put shared-mime-info files in rox220.pup
- enabled rox key shortcuts
- uses /root/Choices20/ for config files
- setup some Run Actions

That is a pretty file manager for sure. Seems a lot like nautilus in gnome with the options and icons. I will be interesting to see if it uses resources and slows the pup down on older machines.

i have debian installed on another partition here on my 700mhz pIII, which uses that version of Rox, and it seems just as snappy as the rox that's currently in puppy...
only pretttier and more functional

it seems to work ok
not quite finished and polished
the thing is, the newer rox's use a different mime system, and the config files are not compatible with the old config files, and when you run the pinboard, it pops up a warning message if you use the -o option ... so you have to deal with all this stuff
i think i'll have to register this one with PupGet too ... the /usr/local/bin/rox file anyway ... if the original rox file was restored, it would run the old rox, which would be unhappy with the changed config files
of course, the old config files have to be backed up so they can be restored if you uninstall the newer rox
i should have a dotpup (about 935k) uploaded soon (well, soon-ish)

G2 - I think Barry did mention the Mime problem and also that the existing Rox was smaller and more workable and he preferred it - so the idea of a Pupget is a good one - people can then have their own preferences . . .
Good luck

I like it but it will take time to get used to. Is Barry going to replace the old rox?
I hope not, not until I play with this and get used to it.
Again great job Guest Too!!!

pupget did not like the name i used to register
so i uploaded a new version with a slightly different name
(roxfiler instead of rox_filer)
i tweaked a few things ... the -o pinboard option in xinitrc is changed by the installer/uninstaller ... rox should find the shared-mime-info when running as spot ... i removed the debug/compile/zero-install stuff from AppRun (Puppy doesn't have that stuff)

GuestToo, bloody great work!
Much, much nicer. All the fonts seem cleaner, I really hope that this gets shipped with the new version of Puppy that we're all gleefully expecting.
Please, if anyone finds bugs, report them. So far, so good on my end.
Thanks alot

There is a big size difference between the existing and the newer version. This is why as an option (pupget or .pup) it makes perfect sense. I doubt very much whether it is necessary to incorporate into Puppy 1.0.5
It is great to have this NEW Rox as an option (suiting the minimalists and those requiring extra functionality)
- I am using it for the last two days - it removed all my icons and desktop background on startup (and installed a default series) and now when I boot up a tiled background appears (I was trying to use wallpaper Xli without success as ROX which seems to have this facility - so some intereference?) and it asks me to confirm some -a option before going into the desktop - so still some glitches . . .
Apart from diferent icons I have yet to find 3 megs (over the old ROX) worth of improvements - what have others found useful - must have - in the new Rox?
Good Job G2 - always wondered about this newer Rox . . .
Many thanks much to explore . . .
Are we frisky enough?
