xbox compatibility

#1 Post by mmelon »

Hi Barry,

Have you considered adding code to make puppy an xbox compatible OS?

I should imagine it would be very popular.

Most of us are refugees from the Bill Gates "Games Machine"
and toy operating system
(wot no guarantee? - oh you get a guarantee . . .)
They should be sued for murder

In the future I would certainly (if possible) like to see Puppy running on the cell processor driven play station 3 and then on cell processor driven cell phones

Who else?

There is already a version of Damn Small Linux that can run on the XBox, so Puppy might also be able to.
Not aware of anyone trying it yet, though.
Lobster might be rather ambitious in contemplating a combination of Puppy and the XBox/360 (or PS3). Maybe some time in the future, but I expect Mr Gates' troops will be busy trying their hardest to prevent a Linux port.

My partners son has one of these horrible machines. The 360 comes without WIFI or a Hard Disk (these you must buy separately and are basically 3 times more expensive than their PC counterparts for the same item). You must also "subscribe" to what are extremely cheap to run "online services" to be able to use it online.

This is all the more infuriating as an XBOX inside is basically a crippled PC. To lever their monopoly on destop computers, Micro$oft basically created something that PC games developers could relatively inexpensively port their PC games onto...using one monopoly to create another.

Not content with funding crooked politicians (i.e. George Bush et al) to escape their social responsibility and duty to comply with the law, they now sink to exploiting children via their toys to boost their shareholder profits. :x

When faced a nasty corporate who think nothing of using tactics like this (amongst many more), it even more important for our puppy developers to forgoe their mouse-wheel switching desktops in order that we can make a significant difference to the stranglehold they have on the worlds information network.

Like I say, an xbox is basically a pc...from here....
The Xbox is a legacy-free PC by Microsoft that consists of an Intel Celeron 733 MHz CPU, an nVidia GeForce 3MX, 64 MB of RAM, a 8/10 GB hard disk, a DVD drive and 10/100 Ethernet. As on every PC, you can run Linux on it.
Sounds like ideal specs for Puppy ;-)

The only real problem with an Xbox (the original black model) and linux is the 64mb of ram... but if there is a distro that could make do, it's Puppy!

I'd pick one up and stick Puppy on it, if a puplet was available.

*Bump!*

I'd appreciate a puplet for the original ( black ) xbox, I have tried XDSL but prefer using Puppy :)

Hate to break it to ya, but Xbox 360 =! Xbox. The original Xbox, sure it's a lot like a PC (even uses an Intel Pentium III/Celeron CPU), but the 360 uses a triple-core PowerPC CPU with 2 threads per core, with the cores based off the main Cell CPU core. Then there's the RAM which is actually 512MB of GDDR3 (not DDR, but GDDR) that's allocated between the system and the GPU however desired by the game developers. These's aren't exactly standard PC features, which is the same reason why original Xbox backwards compatibility isn't all that perfect - most if not all of the entire Xbox hardware must be emulated.

Also the HDD for the 360 is NOT a normally a separate add-on - that's only if you get the lowest end model (which is even cheaper than a Nintendo Wii mind you). And heck the HDD isn't even REQUIRED unlike many PS3 games that require installation (the arcade's included memory card should be fine for just game saves)

There's nothing that makes specifically the 360 any more PC-like than other game consoles.

MS bought the Natal system for the 360
- its potential is huge
Apple will probably enter the console scene at some point
The Wii is very 'Apple like'

We have downloaded a couple of games directly from the net
(Igames anyone) - it is the way things will go

New console? Need an OS? Use Puppy Woof Build

puppy xbox

#9 Post by luther349 »

making puppy work on the xbox should be easy being it can aruldy use image file to install in. you need to do a few things however. you need to downgrade to a 2.4 kernel being there was never a stable fatx driver for 2.6. you need to patch xorg for its nivida driver. as well as alisa for the sound. al the patches are aruldy available so its just a matter of compiling them in.

Both xbox360 & PS3 are powerPC architecture, and the hardware is pretty similar

By now is not possible to boot linux in the PS3... because sony has removed the "otherOS" (some kind of bootloader) in recent firmwares for the "fat" ps3 models
In new "slim" models is removed too
Even the "official" "yellow linux" cant be booted
An additional problem is that there is no graphic acceleration, because the lack of info about hardware, so lot of apps dont work, even some windows managers (everything that uses graphic acceleration dont works)

But in xbox360 there was an old exploit (king kong game) that let you install a bootloader ("xell" xenon linux loader)... and there is a gentoo liveCD that boots from xell
This happened years ago... so is a bit more advanced than ps3 (but has the same problem with graphic acceleration)
http://www.free60.org/Main_Page

Around 1 year ago it was discovered another exploit (JTAG read/write access to nand)
This again was used to install xell and to run linux on 360

**With this 2 exploits in xbox360 you can boot from gentoo liveCD, and install another distro to HDD

So... a puppy360 is doable and there are lot of people with "hacked" consoles ready to run it

PuppyPS3 has less audience because there are only a few consoles that are not updated
I personallly think that sony will enable the bootloader in the future (they disabled it because the exploit found by geohot)
