Subject description: Dual 450 MHz Pentium II with 384 Mb RAM

I am attempting to install Puppy Linux 2.15CE on an HP Kayak, dual 450 MHz Pentium II, with 384 Mb RAM. It has two IDE hard drives, an 80 GB drive 0 (hda) with Kubuntu installed, and a 10 GB drive (hdb) where I want Puppy.

Puppy runs fine from the CD, but will not boot from the hard drive.

vmlinuz, initrd.gz, pup_215.sfs and zdrv_215.sfs are in the / directory of hdb1.

/boot/grub/menu.lst reads as follows:

title Puppy Linux
root (hd1,0)
kernel /vmlinuz root=/dev/ram0 PMEDIA=idehd
initrd /initrd.gz

Grub loads and displays "Puppy Linux". If I press Enter, the following messages are displayed:

Booting 'Puppy Linux'

root (hd1,0)
Filesystem type is ext2fs, partition type 0x83
kernel /vmlinuz root=/dev/ram0 PMEDIA=idehd
[Linux-bz Image, setup=0x1c00, size=0x124b1b]
initrd /initrd.gz

Error 15: File not found

Press any key to continue...

Pressing a key simply brings me back to the Grub menu.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to what file might be missing or in the wrong location? I was hoping to be able to use a distribution with less resource requirements than Kubuntu on this older machine.

???

kernel (hd1,0)/vmlinuz root=/dev/ram ....
initrd (hd1,0)/initrd.gz

if not found

kernel (hd2,0)/vmlinuz root=/dev/ram ...
initrd (hd2,0)/initrd.gz

???

I don't see the problem, but I believe the error 15

I don't think it will hurt to be more specific as shown above

When the GRUB menu comes up, press 'c' to go to a command line.
Type 'find /vmlinuz' and 'find /initrd.gz'
This will tell you where GRUB thinks the files are.

It appears that my problem was the presence of a Grub loader on the other hard drive. Even though I had set the Bios to boot from the second hard drive (hdb), Grub insisted in looking on the first drive (hda) for the initrd.gz file.

I resolved the problem by adding Puppy to the end of the menu.lst file on hda and setting my bios back to normal. I also changed the last line to read:

initrd (hd1,0)/initrd.gz

and deleted the /boot/grub directory on hdb.

Thank you for the help. I do have one other (dumb) question. When you install new software (Audacity in this case), how do you add it to the menu?
