How to make a multi-purpose boot CD for Puppy

I have a 9 year old laptop that has puppy installed on the hard drive (the hard drive only has one partition). I would also like to boot of my USB flash drive (16GB, first partition is 10GB FAT32 storage, second partition is 3GB ext3 Puppy, third is 3GB ext3 nothing yet, maybe another Puppy in the future).
The problem is my BIOS does not support USB booting and your pup2usb does not work. I followed the instructions carefully and everything went OK but when I rebooted the computer it went to the grub prompt instead of the menu. I have another boot/menu.lst on my hard drive which I have been booting off of, can I just use this one instead of putting one on my flash drive?
I have GRUB on a floppy BTW.
Thanks.

I got it to work! This is taken from menu.lst on my puppy hard drive installation:
Code: Select all
title Puppy on partition two of Mr. Maxwell's flash drive
root (hd0,0)
# vmlinuz is in /boot/ of my puppy hard drive installation
# the root=/dev/sdb2 tells linux to launch puppy off partition 2 of my
# flash drive (which puppy's installed to)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz root=/dev/sdb2 ro vga=normal
# initrd.gz is also in /boot/ of my puppy hard drive installation
initrd /boot/initrd.gz

That's a good question but I have no idea. The BIOS on both of my windows computers are very weird and I cannot boot puppy on them. (I'll worry about this when I get new computers to replace them, right now windows is fine) If you go off of how windows treats each partition as a seperate device it should be able to boot off of the second partition. As for the ext3 filesystem I don't think that would make a difference, as long as it can read the boot sector (or whatever it's called) it should boot right?
But the easy way to find out is, grab a flash drive, reformat to ext3, put Puppy on it, stick it in a windows computer, and see if it boots.

My question was rhetorical:
The flash drive will only boot on the computer you have the
grub list for it installed on.
If instead; you had made a 1st vfat partition for puppy and
used the simple universal installer method, the flash drive
would be bootable on almost any windows or linux computer that
has a usb port. Including your own. No grub necessary.

Let me reiterate.
Neither my laptop or pc has usb booting. It does not make a
difference.
Using wakepup2 floppy or the cd-puppy pmedia=usbflash
is all it takes to boot the flashdrive

But I use GRUB to boot puppy off of my hard drive, this way I only need one boot disk. Since I never use my floppy drive it just stays in there and never leaves. Wakepup2 does not boot ext* partitions so I have to use GRUB.
BTW I just figured out you cannot have more than one bootable Puppy partitions on one flash drive.
EDIT:
Actually you can but you just get the "Type a number to choose which personal file to use:" prompt. Same thing as if you put it all on one partition.

Yes; I discovered the problem with trying to boot multiple
puppies off flash yesterday. Maybe there's a workaround.
It's fine that your method is working for you; but it negates
one of the nicest attributes of a flash drive install, "portability".
So I wouldn't recommend it except in very rare cases.

Created a couple small fat32 partitions and 1 large ext 3
partition on flash drive. Installed 2 different Pups on first 2
parts..
Did not make Pup-save files. Deleted boot flags.
Each Pup boots from the cd it was created from using
puppy pmedia=usbflash. Ext.3 is used as save file.

You can find the file multiboot_cd_dvd.tar.gz atI want to make a liveCD that is bootable into puppy 4.2, geexbox and DBAN. Is this doable with one of these methods?
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 7197fa52c9
I used BCDW for a multiboot cd/dvd. It is difficult but possible to combine both linux & windoz.
This is the basic idea how to geexbox/puppy (geexbox on usb using grub also)

Ummm...
This idea of including Dariks Boot & Nuke in a multi-iso cd ,
has potentially hilarious repercussions.
Please keep us informed of any long term consequences.

Thanks guys for the links, its my "business" day today, but I will give them a try tonight when I get in.
The only long term consequence I can think of is a drop in Micro$ofts enormous profits...something I definitely predict.
Dban is what we use for sanitizing the hard disks of the computers my business collects for refurbishment and redistribution with either puppy for desktop/laptops or geexbox for media centres. This is just for my own personal install toolkit. Please keep us informed of any long term consequences.

@rcrsn51 your advice for the grub-install package is not quite right.
Where you run the grub simulator, and enter "find /boot/marker I got an error message to say that grub could not find it. I tried it on a Debian install on another machine, and that didn't find it either.
So I googled it- and found that it is not often used. So I ignored the message, and all went well.
EDIT: I'm wrong. I managed to lose it, it's part of the grub-install package.
EDIT: without the marker, which is intended to make sure that you put grub in the right place, BE CAREFUL

I just integrated plop boot manager into my multiboot dvd.
Wow, plop is the most advanced multi-purpose boot manager ever.
It can boot/wake up many OS's: linux, windows, bootable image, and also usb without bios support. http://www.plop.at/en/bootmanager.html

Puppy Linux 4.2 retro on USB
Two problems with booting USB.
1st.
Because my computer does not boot from a USB drive, I have been booting Puppy with a WakePup2 floppy, which works great. For faster and quieter booting, I wanted to boot puppy with a CD. I thought pupboot.zip would be my ticket. I downloaded the zip and unpacked it. Using ISO Master I read the note that said that vmlinz and initrd.gz had to be included on the image. I copied them to the pupboot.iso and and burned the iso. Failed to boot. Message on the screen stated, "Loading Stage 2" and stuck there. Strange thing was that the floppy drive (which was empty) light was on, as if Grub was trying to access the floppy.
What is the hitch?
2nd problem:
I then decided to try multiboot. tar.gz. Downloaded, unpacked, read the notes, included vmlinuz and initrd.gz, burned the image, and rebooted. Pup loaded quickly, but wait . . .no sound. lsmod showed few modules loaded:
# lsmod

fuse 44820 0
aufs 151456 3
nls_iso8859_1 4224 1

I tried a new burn with a copy of vmlinuz from the live cd, same result.
What is the fix for either or both of the problems.
Thanks

I just downloaded a copy of 4.20 retro and made a USB-boot CD combo. It worked fine and installed all the sound modules.
Tell us about your PC. Is there anything non-standard about the optical drive?
Do you get sound when you boot off the Live CD?
Did you try rjbrewer's technique? Use the Puppy CD as the boot disk and during the short initial pause, type:
