How do I stop connections from google? ( Solved )

#1 Post by kent41 »

As soon as I login to the web I get a connection from Google.

I have tried to stop with iptables but google just switches to a new IP.

I don't quite understand the mask but this is what I have tried.

Code: Select all

  iptables -A INPUT -s 72.14.208.0/24 -j DROP
  iptables -A INPUT -s 72.14.223.0/24 -j DROP
  iptables -A INPUT -s 72.14.223.0/20 -j DROP
  iptables -A INPUT -s 72.14.223.104 -j DROP
  iptables -A INPUT -s 72.14.223.147 -j DROP

They also use a 72.14.223.99 address.

What mask or table do I use to stop this connection.

Well If you want to stop Webmasters from tracking your posts in blogs and the pages you visit through Google and you use Firefox you could install AdblockPlus and block
www.google-analytics.com/*
Also
https://ssl.google-analytics.com/*

I just read this:
..."step 4 should be revised to http://*.google-analytics.com/* often google will switch to a www.1.google-analytics.com or some such"

Webmasters have to access a script at Google-Analytics to track you.
http://www.managersim.com/blog/index.php/?p=3

That's all I know about blocking Google.

Would Scroogle as your default homepage help you?

Is there no escape from Google. I made scroogle my home page and google did not show up until I went to Puppy forum or anywhere else.

There must be a way to shutout Google.

Well I dont know.

Google is the devil in a lot of ways

I don't know enough to answer your question because if you block all of their IPs' then they will make 10 more next week.

I would think not using their homepage, installing AdblockPlus, delete cookes when exiting your browser, Deny 3rd party cookies, and not using the Goggle Toolbar, would help.

I don't think the Google Toolbar is bad by itself but when you add Adsense and all their other tricks together it gets nasty.

And just think, they are not alone, just the biggest.

And dont forget all the fake Google bugs out there that are really real time bad.

Good luck and if you learn the trick post it here so everyone will know 8)

Money equals power and Google has both.

Ed,

I run Puppy on a localhost proxy which keeps detailed logs of all browser connections. Frankly, I'm appalled at how ubiquitous Google is regarding our web surfing. I'm talking about being able to track accross multipe domains as well if not better than doubleclick. I've nothing to hide. Nevertheless, I'm not the kind of man who finds it acceptable having people reading over my shoulder.

There is however ways to stop it. The hosts file will do it. All you need are the domain names they are using. Anyone want a list?

Thanks EdfromHouston
and Bruce B for the thoughts

I just installed Firefox but I do not see it as much safer than Seamonkey.
I will also install AdBlockPlus . I would like to add a hosts file but I need some instructions on how and where. I had a bad experience adding a hosts file in Linux on Ubuntu. I guess I did not know how to add the hosts file.

Thanks for any help with this

I hate Ubuntu. No dialup modem support, not support at all. Puppy is much better.

Bruce I think your response is spot on but will not help next week when Google ups the bar.

I gave up on blocking Google because they are ruthless in their ways.

I'll leave this alone now and good night.

Ed, you under-estimate me and the power of the hosts file.

Let me give you an example, the hosts file is powerful enough blocking utility that it prevented computers from phoning home to Microsoft. Microsoft wanting those phone calls actually had to rewrite a portion of their OS to make sure that it would get their phone calls. And even at that it would be NO problem for ME to stop my computer from making any unwanted outbound connections to Microsoft or anyone else.

Google is not in position to be rewriting either Linux and especially Microsoft.

Google does not GET you, you GET Google. Meaning to say it is YOUR computer that places a GET request to Google. It all originates on your end, and that's where the power to stop it is, on your end.

No No I dont, I respect you because you know more than me about this. My question is do you know more than Google? I have found it impossible but this is not what I do.

Tell us more and I may tell you how to make your lost car key one day if you ask 8)

Ed,

As far as I've found through reviewing thousands of lines of log files, this is what one would put in ADBLOCK extension for Mozilla to stop Google from reading over your shoulder, while still allowing access to google's search services:

http://kh?.google.com*
http://mt?.google.com*
http://pagead2.googlesyndication.com*
http://www.google-analytics.com*
And while your updating ADBLOCK how about this entry:
*.doubleclick.*

This one, which I don't recommend, would put a big stop to google and it would be all it would take:

*google*

-------------

A hosts file would include more entries and be formatted differently.

Then after updating adblock, check your proxy server's log (I know you don't have one) and you will never find your browser placing requests to anything which matches the specified criteria. Frankly, ADBLOCK is quite adequate for the task in discussion.

Thanks Bruce. Yea I know I have no proxy, I don't need one. I do however use JAP in Windows because let's face it, Windows is Windows. :) Here I just post because I need not worry about bugs.

And BTW, if you need a key just send me a message. 8)

This is a good start to keep google from snooping around in your machine
In you HOST file the first line should always be "127.0.0.1 localhost".
The 2nd and 3rd line will redirect the domain names (no matter of the DNS they are using) back to localhost. Hence they are blocked!
sb.google is real nosy and it took me a long time to figure out how to keep it out of my machine. It is also a good idea to block cookies from www.google.com, but don't add google.com to your host file or you will never be able to use google at all.
sb.google is suppose to be (safe browsing) and downloads a list of Phisher sites to your computer but I found sb.google was takeing more data OUT of my system than it was leaving. SPYWARE!!!!

127.0.0.1 localhost

127.0.0.1 sb.google.com
127.0.0.1 google-analytics.com

After snooping around I found 3 hosts files ( hosts, hosts.allow, hosts.deny).

Why do we need 3 files ? In windows just a file named "hosts" does the job.

OK that was odd to say the least. I had to get rid of Puppy from my hard drive. I'm sorry for thinking it, whatever it was came from here because looking back on it I just dont see how that could happen. I've been running Puppy for about a year now and this is the first time anything like this has happened. I'll reinstall it and be back later, I'm in windows now.

kent41,

Just use the hosts file

I'm sorry to report that if your hosts file gets very large it will slow down Puppy

For some reason Windows can handle a hosts file with 20,000 lines and not bog down.

I've not found the answer to why Puppy is limited in the number of lines it can contain without bogging down.

Bruce,
I added a hosts file and yes you are right it did slow things down but not that much and I can live with it. I also installed Adblockplus and it blocks any Google connection to my computer. Thanks for the help.

I think I will close this post now.
