Xvoice...or something else...maybe...

#1 Post by lickthefrog2 »

My TabletPC has two built in microphones. I know for sure one of them works in Puppy. They're for voice dictation as set up under Windows XP Tablet Edition.

Since I almost never use MS now that my Linux TabletPC does its primary purpose of grading papers using digital ink, I'm wondering about voice recognition software.

I searched and noticed some mentions in the forums, but not much. Perhaps I missed something.

I figure I'll look around, but if anyone knows anything about what's out there...

I found Xvoice http://xvoice.sourceforge.net/. I don't know how hard it would be. I'll probably try it, but I move at a turtle's pace. I'll post as I go. Hopefully someone will beat me to it.

Speech Recognition

I got Puppy to sing - but it was about a year ago and quite a process
you need symphony, miditcl and permission from these guys (which they readily gave)

However a singing computer is great fun
this one only talks . . . a bit

anyway an exciting possibility . . . woof woof (so to speak)

I didn't get far. I downloaded it, extracted it, started to configure it and got stuck so I read a bit more:
IBM's ViaVoice Engine

xvoice is free software, but IBM's engine on which it depends is not. In order to run xvoice, you will need a licensed version of ViaVoice for Linux. (The xvoice development team is in the process of investigating open source speech recognition engines.)

To install xvoice from RPM, you only need the Run Time Kit (ViaVoice_runtime-3.x-x.x.rpm). IBM no longer provides this RPM for free download. The Runtime RPM is available as part of the IBM ViaVoice Dictation for Linux package, which can be purchased online for $39.95. IBM will only ship it within the U.S. and Canada. (There is a separate link to purchase in Canada.)

To build xvoice from source, you will need the ViaVoice Speech Recognition (ASR) SDK (ViaVoice-sdk-3.x-x.x.rpm). This RPM is no longer available from IBM.

If you need to build xvoice from source, or cannot get a copy of the Run Time Kit to install from RPM, please notify the mailing list; we will probably be able to help you.
So that's it for now. Don't have time for a spell...
