hi, it's probably very stupid problem, but i don't know how to resolve it. i looked at a few instructions/tutorials and they all start off with 'click on setup, then on wirless network wizard...' and it's just not there.
i just installed puppy 2.12 (the one with seamonkey) and i chose to install it as the only operating system on my hd.
the only internet connection at my place is wireless - don't have either cable nor the telephone line.
i'm using gigafast mini wireless usb adapter (one of those 802.11b/g model wf748-cui). it does work with ubuntu linux and winxp.
under puppy, if i look for the list of usb devices (forgot the exact aplication name) it shows up as 'usb2.0 wlan'. not sure if that means anything. i tried to get it through network and modem wizard (the driver for it actually shows up on the list - zdXXXsomething) but after loading the driver nothing new shows up on the list (eth0 is one and only item on the list no matter what i do)
did anybody else have a similar problem? or does anybody know how to access that wirless wizard some other way? (a bit sceptical but still hoping it could somehow work through that)

Although I'd recommend installing the latest version of the network wizard and the rc.network. Bellow I'm explaining why you want the latest versions.

That one uses the zydas chipset. I don't remember if 2.12 had the right version of the zd1211 driver. 2.14 does. Try searching the forum for the zd1211rw driver. I've tested with the WF748-CUI and I found some peculiarities on the driver side. The latest versions of the "network wizard" and rc.network solve the problems with that driver
FYI: The wireless wizard wasn't even a wizard, it was just instructions to set it up manually with ndiswrapper. It's long been obsolete in favour of the network wizard.

Network Wizard
I can not find how to remove NIC drivers that have been saved. I have even browsed around looking for a manual method. It looks like the only way to edit the network is with the wizard. is there no other interface?
I can't find a config file to edit.
I have been fighting with a BCMWL5 wirless card. I think wrong drivers were loaded but can't unload them.

Did you load the drivers with the wizard auto load? If yes, they should show up; I'm assuming you're using 2.12

i'm not sure what the distinction is here. I 've used 2.12 & 3 & they both seem to work the same way, in terms of wizard & wifi setup?

i'm not clear here but in the first paragraph I think the network wizard is not showing up?
What are you clicking on when that happens? Have you tried the Connect to icon on the desktop?
Then in the 3rd paragraph you mention network & modem wizard. i'm not sure why you mention modem? I just click on network wiz & it sounds to me like the wiz is then coming up for you (like it does for me), is that correct? I assume you are loading the drivers from the wizard? You mention picking one from the list but then nothing wifi shows up.
Bottom line, sounds to me like the wiz is not showing up but dunno. Please describe in more detail

a) In the wizard, re-load the driver module you want to remove and the "remove" button will show. (yes, counterintuive but that user interface will change completelly next version)
b) The saved driver modules are stored in /etc/ethernetmodules. You can edit that file to remove the modules you don't want.

ok when i click on setup the following options show up:
- change mouse and keyboard
- setup alsa
- setup the x video
- connect to internet by dialup analog modem
- connect to internet by netowrk interface
- setup printing
- setup scanning
- setup cd and dvd reader and burner rives
- setup a firewall
now when i click on network interface ther is a section called driver modules, when i click on 'load driver' if i select 'cd1211' which as i understan is one that i need, the driver gets loaded but wlan0 doesn't show up (eth0 is still the only one in the list)
if by contrast i click on ndiswrapper and select the driver that came with my wireless stick (they have drivers for 2000 xp 98 and i think nt - all .inf files) i get an error message that the driver is not valid
if i click on 'connect' that is on desktop i get 2 options
- connect by dialup
- connect by network interface
and i aslo get an option to setup a firewall
once when i click on either of them it takes me to the same place if i chose to connect to internet by dialup analog modem or connect to internet by netowrk interface in 'setup'
i also found something called 'wag' in menue under 'network' section but when i click on it i get the following message:
not using pcmcia
no module loaded
dhcpcd not running
wifi-beta not installed
could not find interface in proc/net/wireless
ap test failure
no wireless networks detected
error when scanning
if i click on scan i get the message: no networks detected
i downloaded files from the first response (thanks) i'll try them out and let you know what happened.

I have exactly that adapter and before 2.14 I was using a driver that I compiled.
b) The latest network wizard cleaned up several bugs, one of which was a problem loading certain ndiswrapper modules which contained the binary firmware in the .inf file. The latest versions fix that.
On top of that, the latest rc.network is slightly modified to solve a problem I found with the zd1211rw driver.
In summary:
If you can get Puppy 2.14
- Definetivelly go with this version but make sure you install the latest versions for the network wizard and the rc.network (the links are in my previous quote)
If you plan to stay with 2.12
- Also make sure you install the latest versions for the network wizard and the rc.network (the links are in my previous quote)
- On top of that I'd recommend searching the forum for zd1211 drivers compatible with the kernel version in 2.12.
- I don't remember having used ndiswrapper with this adapter or maybe I did but didn't work. Any way if you want to try ndiswrapper use the latest version of the wizard.

Pup 2.12 was my first linux system wifi connection.
Wireless NIC
I am using Puppy 2.14. I tried the NDISWrapper. My home wireless network is "wide open" but I still can't get it to successfully load the driver and find the network. The driver doesn't "turn on" the NIC.
any suggestions?

What is the exact name of the of the driver file you are trying to load? I'm assuming that the wifi is know to work in winx? Please provide detailed info in how you are going about loading this file. I've accessed the required .inf file through a usb stick & it's worked every time I didn't get an auto load with the wiz & ended up using ndiswrapper.
Ndiswrapper has worked on all i've tried. Course, haven't tried it on everything thats out there & there were many times that I was doing something wrong when using ndiswrapper & it wasn't working out. I did run across some strange situations that prevented a load & ended up sticking to a way that I knew worked for me.
