Subject description: How do I set up a two monitor config using seperate grapc adaptors for one screen

Hi to all puppy - fans out there,

first let me tell you this is a very fine piece of software you have here - it is just almost perfect for my needs.

Well, except one thing.

I like to run a multiple monitor setup using two identical crt 15 inch, capable of 1024x768@60Hz, each connected to a seperate graphic adaptor (see below)

starting from puppy 2.14 seamonkey -fulldrivers live cd.hardware detection for x.org is nice, except some missing entries.

This is the xorg.conf after manually adding the missing lines before starting xserver for the very first time (done using the xorg wizard text editor).

Now starting xserver "xwin" has the following result:

the first screen using the 3dfx card is coming up, the secon done with the S3 card is lightning up (you can see the specs of the card in the same way as if the computer is booted). But then the 2nd monitor is just featuring a blue colored blinking underscore, the rest blank.

Typing a "DISPLAY=":0.0" rox" in the terminal works fine, the application starting.

Typing a "DISPLAY=":0.1" rox" ends up with "Gtk warning: cannot open display"

As I read in many Faqs, of course also in your forum about linux multiple monitor setup almost everywhere the usage of "xinerama" was mentioned to be necessary for my kind of preferred setup.

user "ecomoney" posted the same issue with the correct error message
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?p=71920&search_id=69125465#71920

user "corrosion_of_day" is asking almost the same question as me, unfortenately without answer:
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?search_id=1153390400&t=7776

I did not restart the computer after changing the configs - only restarting x server. I believe JWM is used.

I post the output of my /var/log/Xorg.0.log here:

robert's second link probably isn't going to be much help because I was using a dedicated dual head card with some some speciallised screen options.

You state you need to use xinerama, if you try xinerama "off" does it work at all?

Hello HairyWill,

thank you for your replay.

Actually I got figured it out - now I am running a 3 Monitor configuration as one large screen Very Happy

Here is a short description how I got it done:

1) Hardware

most important part: make sure each part of the system itself is working!

My config:

3 identical Sony 15" CRT
2 almost identical PCI graphic adaptors & 1 AGP graphic adaptor, all single headed

2) Software

unmodified 2.14 puppy linux, as mentioned in my 1st post

I use it to run from RAM completely (LiveCD).

Now just let the system auto-detect everything until the choice between X.org and Vesa.

Choose X.org, let it do the task.

You'll most likely see this "dc stack underflow" error message.
Choose to tweak the xorg.conf file manually.

Here you have to add only some parts (because of my almost identical hardware I do a copy&paste):

Make sure each monitor gets it configuration (Monitor section) - be default only one is specified correct, nevertheless all of them should already be listed from auto-detection.

At the bottom in the Section "Screen" there is only one entry inserted from auto-detection - here you should (copy &) paste this entry according to the number of screens you want to run.

At last you enter in Section "ServerFlags" this:

Code:
    Option "Xinerama" "true"

Now save the file and test it - works fine for me after this alterations.

My config file:

Code:
#Special base config file used in Puppy Linux.

Glad its working.
I looked at your xorg.conf and apart from the fact that you are now using three cards I can't see any difference from the first one. What did you do differently?

Hi HairyWill,

actually my hint 1):

re - checked hardware; somehow the system got confused with the first used grapics adaptor (PCI). In standalone mode it was working nice - but not so when combining it with the AGP card.

Actually I had to test about six cards before everything was fine. I guess it helps a lot using identical graphics hardware...

Wow. Wow. Thank you so much kind sir. I've been trying to get dual monitors to work for soooo..... long. But I couldn't seem to get it. Thanks for taking the time to post this. It worked like a charm. I really appreciate it.

Thanks!
Matthew.

I can't follow any of this. I am running Lucid Puppy on my laptop with an external monitor attached. I'm triple booting with PC/OS, Linux Mint and Windows XP. I run LuPu from the LiveCD with a pupsave. On the other three OSs, I have Dual Monitors working. Even on LuPu I have it working but only as mirror. I want it to span the desktop. How can I get from here to there?
