USB hotplug hangs machine

I have finally persuaded Puppy to run from my grub bootloader, so I'm now CD-free!. Boots in less than 15 seconds. Great.

When I plug in a thumb drive, it hangs. Every time. This thumb drive worked fine from the live-CD pup.

Can anyone tell me where to look for the conflict?
