Could be the usb wifi dongle is a dud. Is it known to work on something?
Seems that the usb wifi dongle is not being recognized & a usb wifi setup problem; in addition to language & wording scenarios.
I think the reference to internal modem means an internal wifi card.
I think the use of modem hookup was because wifi was not working out.

-------------------------------------------------------------
"Why are you using the Modem Wizard? You should use the Wireless Network Wizard instead."
<snip>
Did use network wizard and used all usb drivers nothing works. I got linux drivers for my usb card on cd, uncomressed them, when I say make or make clean it says file not found while I can see makefile is there in the uncompressed folder. Do I need to download devx_213 (developer tool)and put it in same place where puppy save file is? if so from where to download because I cant find it in puppy site.
------------------------------------------------------------
I think that tab was about a box not showing up (like wlan), acknowledging a wifi capability, in this case, the usb device.
Bottom line (i think) is a desire to hookup wifi via usb dongle.

------------------------------------------------------------
<snip>
did an lsmod zd module is there but its called usb storage device instead of eth... or wlan
iwconfig says no wlan found
----------------------------------------------------
Bottom line seems to be that the usb wifi device is not being recognized.

Right.

Bottom line is that a tab, box (whatever it's called) has to show up after drivers are loaded successfully indicating wifi (like wlan) capability.

So the driver is loaded, but no interface is showing. Is this correct? Have you also run all the necessary commands as posted by Tempestuous? Did any error occur when you did so and, if any, what were they? Also, my Zydas based USB WiFi card usually does not work if you plug it in before Puppy has started, so make sure you do that.

All this has been said already, but I thought I would sum it up in one post and reiterate it.

Another way is to load a windows .inf file with ndiswrapper option.

Bottom line, a tab,box.. has to show up (interface) indicating wifi (wlan etc).

Thaks for taking so much time
Yes I do understand dialup modem, router and net cards.
Here is the whole story
When I heard about puppy it used to be ver. 2.11, at that time I just had an internal pci dialup modem, obviously didnt work, after a long querrel I found out that puppy see's it as HSF modem. Downloaded HSF driver along with compiler environment (devx_2.11.sfs). Compiled the driver and at last modem started dialing but after a few seconds hung the line with a message. I through all the log info on forum and no body had any solution to why was modem hanging the line. Well I got fedup forgot about puppy and switch back to windows wold.

When my company got a 512k dsl connection I came back with a real optimism because I heard alot that puppy is a breeze with net cards. down loaded puppy 2.13 and started.

We have a netgear wireless hub in our office and my computer is connected to it with 802.11g usb 2.0 wlan(wireless) adapter. System is working fine under MS windows. I still have dialup modem installed but disabbled (sitting doing nothing).

I burn a cd from iso and started puppy 2.13, Clicked network wizard, net setup window or menu appeared with a load botton, clicked load button scrolled down the list coooooooool my card's driver was there in the list, loaded it but no interface appeared.

As you know when internet is not working in puppy, you have to switch back to windows to join puppy forum, I am sorry to be too lax on terminology, You right there is no second tab its the second peragraph which says puppy does not see any network card active.

Took out cd for my usb lan card good linux driver was there uncompressed it down loaded devx_2.13.sfs and compiled the driver loaded it and yet to no avail. No interface appeared.

Totally frustrated clicked dialup wizard, clicked modem detection buttons one by one on forth or fifth botton a pulldown menu appeard to select the country ok Saudi Arabia then appeard a menu to say that its smartlink modem, two choices is it pci or usb, clicked usb it said click ok and configure the interface. But no interface appered at all.

Hear I gave up and back to forrum hoping that it will be just a quick advice, I thought I was missing just a simple clue didnt bother to use the exact terminology or mention the wardware.

I even compiled drivers for my HSF dialup modem to see if it works in this version of puppy worse than the previous vesions, when its gets to the country choice, no matter what you type or select (even default USA)it says counrty not supported and asks you to select the country. So fasing the brick wall again.

Now deleted puppy save files from disk and started anew
here is the output of lsmod please see for yourself.
Note I have other hardwares including dialup modem still installed please dont get confused I have just one usb device which is my wlan card I am referring to just that its the last entry which says usb core.

I believe that USB storage always shows up. It is the generic flash drive driver (I think). I don't see the WiFi driver loaded. It should be zd1211 or zd1211b or something similiar.

Try going to "load driver" and then choosing either:
"specify" and then finding one of the drivers you downloaded
OR
"zd1211" from the bottom of the list.

See if either of those help. If you already did this, forgive me but it I wasn't sure how you were loading. I know this works, however, you will need to run all of the commands Tempestuous said except for the "modprobe zd1211rw". Good luck.

Might you have access to other brands of usb wifi dongle? Might be easier to try another brand.

This is the key. Have you tried to load the windows inf. driver file with ndiswrapper?

It came with drivers cd and there is linux driver on cd. I uncopressed it in root folder. read through help or readme, tried make and make clean it says file not found. what to do?
there used to be a wlan tab on modem wizard page of older puppy versions I dont see it on ver 2.13 why?

Wizard should be able to 'auto detect' if correct driver is there. Did you try that? If correct driver is loaded, something's not right, that no wifi interface shows up.

Is there only one .inf file?
I have a driver that had 2. One was .inf (puppy didn't accept) & the other was .inf(a) - (puppy did accept).

If the right .inf file is on the cd, puppy should accept it.

What does the .inf file say?

How did you try to load the driver exactly, with ndiswrapper?

Wireless lan adapter

There are 2 .inf files on cd one is autorun.inf 1kb and another is zd1211BU.inf about 15kb puppy does not accept any of these.

I tired to use rutilt from network pulldown menu it says critical error no wireless network card detected have you got wireless extentions copiled for you kernel code 130. How to probe that ?

Could be many reasons why a particular combination doesn't work out. Can't help out any further here myself.

I was lucky. Had a few d-link dwl g122 ver b usb wifi dongles hanging around & tried them out.

It's worked like a charm, on every computer I've tried it on, with live cd ver 2.12 (&3), desktops & laptops (~7), using the windows .inf file, with ndiswrapper.

I've seen them on e-bay for ~ 30 bucks..

Another 5 bucks, includes a wifi g router.

Puppy has Wireless Extension v20
You can see by running this command -

iwconfig --version
