Gxine, MPlayer, and VLC will all play "HD" video files. In fact, they will play video files of even HIGHER resolution than the current HD standard (1920x1080). If the file has come from broadcast TV, it will have the MPEG2 codec, but HD content is also available on the web typically compressed with H264, DivX, or XviD. Again, all 3 players can handle these codecs.

How WELL, or "smoothly" the HD video is played is a performance issue. It depends on whether your CPU, graphics card, and graphics driver can decode the compressed video data in real time. If not, you will see "jerky" or "stuttering" playback.

I provided more details about High Definition TV in the MPlayer thread here http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 0815#80815

Gxine is standard in Puppy. MPlayer and VLC are available as dotpups. But as Gn2 has suggested, go ahead and compile VLC yourself if you prefer. I warn that it is quite difficult to compile.

i did instal the dotpup for mplayer and i cannot seem to be able to run it anymore though (it's simply vanished leaving just a readme behind).

EDIT: the commandline seems to work for mplayer but i have no idea where i can run the gui from.. root/my applications only has that readme in it..

the smoothness issue is well relative with my computer. my specs are the borderline hd playback (athl xp 2200+ 512ram mx440 64mb vream and 2*80gb wd 8mbit 7200 drives OR dvd-rw) but with windows it's always been a strange issue. on windows xp which was so bugged down it hardly moved, 720p playback of the matrix was veeery smooth. however on a fresh install (+ffdshow) on 2003 the same file moved actually slower and with more jitter.

now i've only open a partial file from pulp fiction from a dvd (as it fails to mount my lord of war hd) and it was really jittered (but i believe it was from another gxine which was "rebuilding the index" of some video file).

that's why smoothness is well relative. so i'm interested in the best playback. and i gues gxine should be it since it's bundled.

thanks a lot for the help and the really quick reply.
i love puppy but since the only hard thing ever was configuring XMS and EMS in my old DOS days it's a bit hard to get around some issues.

PS: i think i've tried mplayer on my windows (dunno which one) and it actually was slower and buggier than media player classic...

I saw a Blu-Ray movie playing on a big 1920 X 1080 LCD at Fry's the other day. The picture was truly impressive, but the story still sucked. :(

:))

what movie was it? i'm just curious.

but about hdtv i seriously think it's wow. just wow. so far i've seen lord of war, the matrix trilogy, serenity (worked crappy), pulp fiction (1020p - buggy voice at the beginning then ok), some music vids and some random porn in HD. and all (maybe except the porn which wasn't that much more persuasive) were amazing in quality especially compared to the normal dvd-qual...

also since my eyes set upon HD i have yet to be impressed with regular cinemas anymore. there's just nothing that appeals to having to watch a movie in a big hall with 200morons on a huge screen at a relatively low quality image with sound no more impressive than my home setup... (not that i don't go anymore, i've been just yesterday there but seriously offers nothing)... and to the antipiracy people i say since the movie makers find this to be so common why not make better movies and price them less? i am seriously saving up for the ultimate matrix boxset and i also have a copy of easy rider on DVD at home. but otherwise few movies impress me past the point of watching and deleting in haste.

PS: puppy 2.12 sais it's out of memory and doesn't want to restart or shut down, just restarts xorg... (there is free ram - and swap). also the gui crashes when i enter the mplayer directory - yeah, found it - so anyone HEEEEEEEELP!!!!

Hello eydryan,
If you go to www.dotpups.de you will find the VLC Player which has been made into a Dotpup.
I have installed it on Puppy 2.10 and it appears to be working correctly
Legacy OS 2017 has been released.
