Congrats to Barry for training Puppy to be his own development environment

Things should get very interesting around here.
Anyone know of a general text that might explain to us users what this really means? Maybe one that applies to what will be available in Puppy and what this means to Puppy's future.

Well, it means that you can compile source code.
But, I think I know what you're asking for, a guide that explains all the steps for compiling and so on... maybe someone can provide feedback about a good online howto? ...what about that RUTE book (is that what it's called)?

download source

extract source from archive to a suitable location

cd into the directory containing the source

eg /usr/src/downloaded-you-beaut-app

READ ALL THE DOCS IN THE DIRECTORY

ESPECIALLY ANY INSTALL & README FILES

You may have to download other sources depending on what your new app mat need

Then after reading the INSTALL & REAM files you now have the info required to compile....If you run into problems

1. Remeber the INSTALL & README's ? They usually have addresses of mailing lists you can search

2. If you don not find the info you are after, try googling

3. If this fails and you have no ideas make a post to the relevant mailing list

4. If you get a reply and do not understand or you get no reply post to the puppy forums but please describe EXACTLY the errors you are getting, the version you are trying to compile, the steps you have taken so others may reproduce the same errors then be very very patient

5. PLEASE DO NOT SAY "I CAN'T COMPILE XYZ" "IT DON'T WORK" OR ANY OTHER 3 WORD PROBLEM. If you won't help yourself do ont expect others to do so.

6. Someone (other than me) make a suggestion that we should mayhaps start a wikki on what we can compile in puppy and what we can't and any possible work arounds.

Barry has uploaded a developers C compiling environment based on 1.0.5 - Expect an announcement soon or go to the news page on puppylinux.com or the wiki

You knew Puppy was 8)

Are we having fun yet? Stay frisky. I think Judge Dredd has taken that literally . . .

Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request. "

Downloaded succesfully, but with the wrong md5sum....

Shit....

How to resume downloads with wget

Posted: Fri 29 Jul 2005, 07:54
by GuestToo
i do not recommend using Firefox or Mozilla or IE for downloading large files ... they do not have resume capability (i think Opera can resume)

i use wget ... if for any reason the download stops (or you stop it or your OS crashes [some people use Win ME]) ... you can just resume the download anytime

basically, just open an rxvt window in the dir you want to download to, and type:
wget -c the-url-of-the-file

the -c option is to resume the download

oh well, must sleep now...... will continue, and hey, tomorrows looking like a really cool day when I have the ability to compile apps in Puppy as an option!

if you are downloading puppy-barebones-1.0.5alpha1.iso
you want to use puppy-barebones-1.0.5alpha1.iso.txt
to check the md5sums
not puppy-barebones-1.0.4.iso.txt

if you use wget, it's really easy
download puppy-barebones-1.0.4.iso.txt
then press the downarrow key to repeat the command
remove .txt using the backspace key and press enter

Apparently a server problem. Let's give Barry a chance to fix it.

Hey guys, sorry about devx.sfs, it didn't have read permissions so couldn't be downloaded. Now fixed.

Maybe if you have downloaded puppy 1.0.5alpha1 and md5sum is wrong, post it here and we will see if others get the same md5sum.

both md5sums are correct here, thanks Barry
