PupWin98.zip with Puppy 1.0.4 now available

#1 Post by JaDy »

PupWin98.zip with Puppy 1.0.4 is now available here:
http://www.freeveda.org/linux/puppy/

Puppy Linux for Win98 works with Windows 98 with no need for floppy disk and no need for cd-rom drive.

This is Puppy Linux version 1.0.4 with Mozilla, re-packaged as a zip archive file with a few pieces added to run from your Windows 98 desktop. You'll need an un-zip program like ALZip or WinZip to handle the zip file.

Thanks! Downloading it now.

BTW - I see you're from SE PA. I'm originally from NE PA. Pretty cool. 8)

Just installed it on my desktop. I have to say this is one of the coolest things. It's by far the easiest, safest, least intrusive way to get Linux on a hard drive. It's fast, easy, and simple for newbies or those who don't necessarily want to fool around with bootloaders or partitioning and don't want to boot from a CD or floppy all the time.

More people should know about this. I even thought of a name for it: WinPuppy. Sort of goes along with current naming trends (HardPuppy, FlashPuppy, etc.).

Thanks for the feedback, cygnus. I've been wondering if anyone uses it. Well, I use it daily. Yes, I eat my own dogfood. :lol:

Anyway, you got the idea exactly: fast, easy, safe. I hasten to add that I think Barry got it right by focusing on the CD and FLASH approach; and the CDW experiment is very promising (PortaPuppy?).

I don't know about the name, WinPuppy. Too many of us feel uneasy about anything Windows. You got the Puppy spirit right, though. It needs a puppy-ish name. This needs meditation. Um, LazyPuppy? 8) CoolPuppy? ArcPuppy?

Actually ... I guess that isn't really that catchy.

Where's a list of all the existing variations of Puppy?
Here be some:

Apologies to anyone I missed.
Looks like the makings for a Wiki page.

The next version of PupWin98 (using Puppy105) will likely use grub.exe instead of tiny.exe thanks to help from BruceB and WiZard. You can modify the current PupWin98.zip installation to use grub.

Replace the use of tiny with grub in PUPPY\PUPLINUX.BAT thus (2 lines):

Code: Select all

@rem PUPPY\tiny PUPPY/VMLINUZ PUPPY/IMAGE.GZ root=/dev/ram0 PHOME=hda1 PFILE=pup001-none-262144
PUPPY\GRUB.EXE --config-file=(hd0,0)/Puppy/menu.lst
Build PUPPY\MENU.LST thus (7 lines):

Code: Select all

timeout 0
default 0

title Puppy RAM
    rootnoverify (hd0,0)
    kernel /puppy/vmlinuz root=/dev/ram noapic PFILE=pup001-none-262144 PHOME=hda1
    initrd /puppy/image.gz
Put grub.exe into the PUPPY folder. You can get it here:
http://www.freeveda.org/linux/puppy/GRUB.EXE

Change the advanced settings of the Puppy Windows shortcut so that the autoexec.bat is empty and the config.sys contains:

Code: Select all

DOS=HIGH,UMB
Device=C:\WINDOWS\Himem.Sys

When I tried to open it, it said it couldn't create or find /usr dir.

And the instructions gave a second file to save:
Verify integrity with MD5:
right-click here and select Save Target As ...

But there are two different files presented here: md5.zip and PupWin98.md5 and no instructions on what to do with this later.

Duh ...

md5.zip contains md5sum.exe

extract it with winzip.

Then you can check the zip:
type in the dosbox
cd c:\WhereverYouExtractedTo
md5sum pupwin98.zip
then you should be shown the same as in pupwin98.md5 (that is a textfile you can open with notepad).

I extracted the md5.zip file.

Still won't work. Though what I wrote earlier was incorrect. It has the /usr dir but can't create or find the usr_cram.fs file. Says Puppy should load, but not be able to save, but it doesn't even load.

I downloaded Puppy Linux for Windows 98 and tried it (unsuccessfully) on
my windows ME, so now, I transferred it over to my old windows 95 PC where I have the Puppy Linux Live CD and a couple other distros that I am
trying to learn to use.

1) The documentation from the download site is vague as to whether it will work on windows 95, so that is my question, huh?

2) The reason for trying to use it, is that I have the winmodem problem and am unable to connect. So my question also, is if this version will work on windows 95, will it default to the winmodem or will I still have to opt for getting an external modem, huh?

Im just wondering... could i replace the files with other distros like slax and have this work? (Since my floppy is basically dead and computer doesnt boot from CD/USB) But yeah what i would like to do is edit the puppy.bat file to include a third option... so its like "Boot into puppy, Slax, or Windows". Would someone please help me out with this :X
