Hi KLH am SOOOO glad someone has finally decided to compile this and make it easy for internet connection sharing under puppy.

Firestarter I am sure enables people with several network cards to dish out a connection to several other pc's via dhcp from one card to one or more others. ITs a big gap in the market for people trying Linux for the first time.

Anyway, a few problems to begin with. Im using 2.13 with the gnome .pup from your site. Firstly there doesnt seem to be a menu entry created when I install this. Doing a search revelead that there is a file created in /usr/local/bin/firestarter to start it. Dropping down to the command line in a terminal I can type "firestarter" to start it up.

In both cases I get the error in a nice message box

Code: Select all

A proper configuration for Firestarter was not found. If you are running Firestarter from the directory you built it in, run 'make install-data-local' to install a configuration, or simply 'make install' to install the whole program.

Firestarter will now close.
typing "make install-data-program" gives an error "make not found". I have an idea this is something to be with there being no compiler for puppy.

How would I get hold of this config file? Is there a way of running this without installing a 9mb library?

Many thanks for starting work on this. Let me know if you need any more testing doing.

Desktop file

#4 Post by ecomoney »

There is a file in /usr/share/applications called "firestarter.desktop" which can be dragged to the desktop to creat a shortcut. If you right click and select "edit item" you can change the text underneath it to just "firestarter".

Have just done a google on the error message andthere seems to be a few people with the same problem. According to one post, its to do with

Code: Select all

The script firestarter in /etc/rc.d checks if file
/opt/gnome/etc/firestarter/firestarter.sh exists, but there is no such
file in my system.

Thanks ecomoney. I was actually experimenting with this pkg. I was hoping that firestarter would run from it's own special directory, it seems this will not work.

So I will make a reg. package. and get it online asap. Thanks !

Links broken???

#6 Post by lasso »

I was glad to see your work with attempting to install the Firestarter firewall, but I could not get the suggested links to work.

Does this remain an r&d process or could you suggest an alternative route for me to pursue. I would need beginner instructions as this is my first week in a new doghouse. So I just try to follow along, sniffing out the bones left by the side of the trail.

Because firestarter requires gnome an entire desktop/window manager I suggest we start putting our efforts into an alternative graphical firewall. One that is not dependant upon so much.

Please check out this post for further information and reply if you support such a project. This may help interested developers climb on board.
