How I customized DebianDog64

#1 Post by oui »

see thread http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=101931

## remaster your DebianDog64
##
## install jwm
##
## open roxterm
##
apt-get update
apt-get install xli jwm
## now hit on leafpad icon on desktop
## open /root/xsession
## you MUST help you hitting on the "Type a file name icon"
## a bit unvisible under the left corner at the top of leafpad
## and change last line "exec openbox-session into
exec jwm
## hit on "menu" > "exit". You are now in commando line. Do
startx
## jwm appears with it's menu key (named JWM), the divers virtual screebs,
## the bottom tray (you can easily change it, so left of screen!) and the clock
## a second virtual analog clock will appear a bit later on the screen!
## The menu is very good but composed in Debian manier as tree.
## Directly useful is the 1st item "Terminal" and the second one "Debian"
## You find all what you need under "Debian" and don't try to change it yourself!
##
## Hit now on terminal. What? Roxterm appears! You know it, see above
## You did already update (see above), you can directly continue: for ex.
apt-get remove iceweasel
## Try it! After the precedent command, the system answer:
apt-get remove iceweasel
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
The following packages will be REMOVED:
iceweasel
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 1 to remove and 10 not upgraded.
After this operation, 90.7 MB disk space will be freed.
Do you want to continue? [Y/n]
## You can continue with "Y" or break with "n". I look myself for
## that message and register it often, answering "n". I add the
## redirection:
apt-get remove iceweasel > remove1
## and answer now with "Y" and after that "return".
## The system does it now and register above text under document
## name "remove1" so I can see later how many disk / memory space
## I did recover with this remove, and which dependencies / recommands
## did the system name, erase or only recommands. If I know / find it
## would be good, I remove also the named recommands...
##
## I very often use the cursor up key doing that and make my command
## longer, longer and longer. At the end, it name all erased binaries!
## You find and can copy and save this long "apt-get remove"-line in
## /root/.bash_history (an hidden line)
## and save it where you want IN A PARTITION (you are in live! no save
## in the live system, pls!)
##
## After removing iceweasel, inspect the "Debian menu" and erase all
## the stuf being more than a MUST!
## JWM>Debian>>Applications>>Audio/Video: nothing
## JWM>Debian>>Applications>>Editors: nano (install e3 ;-) its enough...)
## JWM>Debian>>Applications>>File Management: ab.all! (gmrun is enough;
## install clex, and if you want comfort, xfce4-appfinder ;-) ..)
## JWM>Debian>>Applications>>Network: elinks
##
## etc! continue so through the all JWM>Debian>>Applications !
##
## The system did inform you from step to step which dependencies can
## also be removed! Remove them, with discernment, but remove much of them!
##
## At JWM>Debian>>Applications>>System be very careful! Less is (probably)
## better! Remaster often if you remove deeply in this field...
##
## As JWM (or ratpoison, or both) are enough for me, I remove in
## JWM>Debian>>Applications>>System>>Administration
##
## openbox + wbar and a lot of the recommandations proposed!
##
## You have now a very smart choice of binaries!
##
## Visit now your system (/usr/bin and /usr/local/bin)
## and check the need or not of divers software like alsamixergui
## (unneeding ballast: a desktopstarter in /usr/applications with
## option "Terminal=true does exactly the same, that gui is nonsens!
## If you don't know to do that, look at
## /usr/share/applications/htop.desktop as modell !)
##
## You can now remaster with /usr/local/bin/remasterdog !
##
## After the first pass, where remasterdog copy all the system
## you can visit you new system and will see, that
## a lot of subdir's from erased software are yet als well
## in /usr/share as HIDDEN in /root (names with a point in front
## as /root/.wbar)! You have now the chance to erase them manually!
##
## remasterdog build now YOUR shrinked copy of DebianDog64
##
## rename the original one 01-filesystem.squashfs so it can not be
## recognized any more (oldsys20160101 f. ex.) and integrate now
## the new one at it place in the frugal installation!
##
## Restart now! Good luck!
##
## Note:I did integrate manually a copy of the very old extrem tiny
## browser «retawq» to look for help texts being in HTML ;-)
## you can read in the puppy forum with it but not login and can not
## do much more today with it (encoding!). but for such HTML helps...
##
## install didiwiki in tiny systems having a browser is good idea:
## didiwiki is a passable smart text edit system with fat, underlined
## italic, titel, able to show pictures in xwindow!
## You can easily build a calendar in it ;-) and a lot more
## and you can send each didiwiki doc as simple text document!
##
## if you want better your jwm environment, you can modify
## /etc/jwm/system.jwmrc (but NOT debian-menu!!!).
## look for ex. at /usr/bin/wmpoweroff and wmreboot and include them!
## Check also if you want modify the tray or add in <StartupCommand>!
## You can add referenzes to available icons
## (/usr/share/icons or /usr/share/pixmaps)
##
## having now a kind of minimal system, you can try to add the divers
## tools made by RSH to augment such system although they did not be
## made for such a very special Puppy in 64 bit!

Merci, oui. Je dois essayer cette approche. Utilisez-vous pour ce live CD/DVD? Est-ce que les extensions de SFS de Rainer travailler pour cela?
Cordialement, Eric
Today only. Anger not. Worry not. Be grateful working karma. Be kind.

I'm surprised you don't spend more time in the French-speaking forum, Eric.

I've checked it out, Mike, but my schooling and Google just aren't up to it. I can occasionally cobble together a nicety response for the Francophones that hopefully acknowledges more than insults their language. Gotta try to answer the commendable effort they put out in English.

I gotta confess, I always found French easier to learn than the German they thought we ought to learn, back when the UK was initially joining the Common Market, as it was back in the '70's. But that's 40-odd years ago.....and I haven't used my 'school-boy' French since. Yes, I can cobble together the odd sentence if I have to.....but it's far from being very comprehensible!

I speak a little Norwegian, but I've always found German way too daunting. Somehow I missed Spanish, despite a decade hosting exchange students, which is very embarrassing. No one in the US should be ignorant of Spanish.
