Puppy *is* small

#1 Post by wom_bat »

(sorry, hit the wrong button... this was meant to be a reply in a different topic --- in the `suggest mawk and levee' thread)

Puppy is small at present. I'd like it to be smaller still, to make room for other stuff.

(I'm currently trying to put together a liveCD based on Puppy to teach an embedded systems development course ... so I need room for cross compilers, and a complete sourcee tree. I also want to teach standard editors and tools --- vi, emacs, awk, sed, ksh, etc. There's not enough room for emacs, but I must have a real vi. The e3m emulation isn't good enough. So far, I've ripped out all the multimedia stuff, replaced gawk with awk, thrown away all editors and put in levee instead; removed any duplicate functionality I can find, added a copy of snapgear, and the standard dev_sfs; The result is around 400M. This is bigger than I'd like.)

Have you seen onebone Puppy? It is CLI and small (28 MB). But perhaps the recent versions are better because of the new T2 environment.

You are welcome to title this topic as "Development Puppy" or the like - am sure a lot of people will benefit from what you are doing.

Here's also hoping that someone would one day port Puppy to Intel PXA...

What do you mean by a "real vi"? Will Vim do, or does it have to be CLI? There's a Vim dotpup somewhere…
