Will Puppy make a good Internet Server?

#1 Post by jerjel »

Hello All

I have an old Pentium MMX 200MHz PC with 128 MB of RAM and 4GB HD Space. I would like to install a basic OS and to make it an Website hosting server. I wanted to install Java SDK, Tomcat, Apache web server and mySQL. Can I do it if I install Puppy Linux? I am new to either Linux nor with hosting a site. But I am planning to give it a try by collecting information from the net. Please help

Thanking you all

I've used Puppy to install Apache and MySQL. Under VMWare Server, even, coexisting with a half-dozen other OS's.

I didn't have any serious issues compiling the newest stable versions of Apache and MySQL. ImageMagick was another story, but you won't need that.

The Java-based stuff should Just Work, after you install Java itself, which should also be fine.

As to how fast it would be, the thought of running Java servers on a 200MHz is a little daunting, but if you're going to do it Puppy is the best OS to do it with.

Only note is that you're going to have to do either a full Hard Drive install or a frugal install. I recommend the full install, because you don't have enough RAM to run this server fully in RAM without a lot of swapping anyway.
